An exciting high altitude trek through the stunning mountain terrain of Southern Zanskar to the beautiful Moon Lake

Ladakhi women, Zanskar

Hemmed in by the Zanskar Range and the Great Himalayan divide, this mountain-locked area remains cut off by snows for half the year. Zanskar is home to some 10,000 or so hardy folk living a life that has altered little since Buddhism first reached the Himalaya over 1000 years ago. Our route starts from Darcha in Lahoul, crosses the Shingo La and continues north to the spectacular monastery of Phuktal, seemingly hewn from a sheer rock face. We climb the magnificent Phirtse La for unrivalled Himalayan views and follow the Chandra River to the emerald waters of Moon Lake.

Day 1
Depart London.
Day 2
Arrive Delhi.
Day 3
Train to Kalka, drive to Mandi.
Day 4
To Manali.
Day 5
Over the Rothang Pass (3978m) to Keylong for acclimatisation.
Day 6
To Darcha; trek to Jaskar Sumdo.
Day 7
Rest day.
Day 8
To Chumik.
Day 9
Cross the Shingo La (5090m) with views of the Himalaya.
Day 10
Follow the Kargyak River past the sacred granite monolith of Gumburanjan. Camp near Kargyak, the highest permanent settlement in Zanskar.

11 - 12
Through stark scenery to villages on a fertile plateau and visit Phuktal Monastery.
 
Day
13 - 14
Continue back towards Tanze then along Phirtse Chu to a wide plateau.
 
Day 15
Cross Phirtse La (5250m) for superb views of the Zanskar Range.
Day
16 - 17
Trek down the Tsarap and Lingti Valleys.
 
Day 18
Along the Leh-Manali Highway, cross the Baralacha Pass (4950m). Camp near Topko Gongma.
Day
19 - 20
Along the Chandra Valley to Moon Lake.
 
Day 21
Trek to Batal; transfer to Manali by road.
Day 22
To Pinjore by road.
Day 23
Train to Delhi
Day 24
Fly to London.
