Reality Check
This trek traverses the country that surrounds the Nanda Devi massif, crossing the ridges and valleys that radiate out from the Sanctuary.
From Haridwar we drive through the Shivalik foothills to the road head near Debal. Here our trek begins as we skirt the outer edges of the Sanctuary, crossing three minor passes or cols and visiting Bedni Bugyal (3354m), a high altitude meadow with great views of Trisul. The high point is undoubtedly the Kuari Pass (4268m) with one of the most outstanding mountain panoramas in all the Himalaya. From here we descend to the Dhauli Ganga Valley and return by road to Haridwar. Although the walking is not technically difficult nor at high altitude, there are some longer ascents and descents which can be more challenging. However, the trails we follow are generally in good condition and are regularly used by villagers and pilgrims. Despite the region being known in mountaineering circles the route we follow is rarely used by other Western groups.
Walking Conditions Much of this trek is along good paths between villages and along shepherd trails elsewhere. You should be confident of your ability to deal with some longer ascents and descents, although there is never any hurry and there are plenty of porters to assist with differing speeds. This is not a high altitude trek so acclimatisation is rarely an issue. The Kuari Pass and the optional ridge walk are not technical and do not present problems other than a bit of extra aerobic exercise! There are occasional snow patches at this altitude and a helping hand is there if needed.

Icons explained
The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together.
All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please
see our Solo Departures page.
Fitness is important and you may have to improve yours before departure. Most treks at this grade compare to extended walking in mountainous terrain such as the Lakes of Snowdonia, but usually at significantly higher altitudes; climate and remoteness can also play a part. Previous trekking experience is desirable, but not vital if you are confident of your physical condition.
Walking & Trekking: Trips are wholly trekking-focused or simply include a significant number of walking days during the itinerary.
