New Zealand is world renowned as a trekking destination and we have worked to develop an innovative itinerary to showcase some of the best routes on offer on the beautiful North and South Islands.
Treks vary in length and terrain: half day to full day, well formed tracks to remote valleys. This is the real New Zealand, so tracks can be slippery and rough and there are river crossings (your boots will get wet!). Tracks can be much rougher than European Alps or UK standards. We hike together as a group stopping for a lunch and regular snacks.
On hike days we average 3-5 hours a day, with the longest day being 5-6 hrs walking, not including rests. On the day walks you will need a small (30) litre day pack, however on the overnight hikes you will need to carry your own sleeping bag, clothing and a share of the group equipment so a larger (50 litre) pack is required.
For the overnight hikes expect packs to weigh up to 12kgs. This makes some of the hikes tough if you are not used to carrying these weights. 12 days walking - average 3-5 hours per day. Grade B/C (moderate/challenging).
Normal group size and age
Normally 5 to 11, plus leader and appropriate local staff. Minimum age 16.
The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together. All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please see our Solo Departures page.
In order to provide a more accurate grading system, where a trip falls between two grades we use an intermediate or split grade, for example Moderate/Challenging. Occasionally, there are optional activities available en route, in this case the optional grade is indicated in brackets, for example Grade Challenging (climb Tough+). Clearly, conditions may differ from region-to-region or month-to-month and as such the information given on these pages is designed to act as a guide only. In all cases you should refer to the respective holiday's Trip Notes for further details.
Walking & Trekking: Trips are wholly trekking-focused or simply include a significant number of walking days during the itinerary.
Wilderness: Visit the deserts, jungles, plateaux, tundra and mountains of all seven continents, including Antarctica.
