  • UNDISCOVERED ATLAS in the rain

Not at all what we were expecting i.e. sunshine. Instead we had torrential rain which threw the itinerary into disarray.  What could have been a disaster became a memorable adventure; helped a lot by the excellent company, copious food and the leader's ability to keep smiling despite the many changes of plan and not being well himself.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Crossing back over the pass between Taddicht and Tagraga in the snow against gale force winds - the view, once we could stand up again, was brilliant.

    Remote really meant remote; fantastic.

What did you think of your group leader?
Very good.  He worked really hard to ensure we always had some where to stay in a village (much too wet to camp).  The cook did a good job at keeping our spirits up as well.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If you intent to make this trek in February make sure you take your thermals and some really waterproof waterproofs! Check the weather forecast before you go.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Staying in Berber houses every night was an interesting, if not always warm or dry, experience.  Better weather resistant tents are needed for this trip!

A wonderful trip in the lesser known Anti-Atlas mountains.  I went just after Christmas, and a better place to be at that time of year I cannot imagine.  We never saw another Westerner, the local people were genuine and friendly and the whole cultural, visual and physical experience was excellent.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
For me it was getting to the top of Jebel Akim.  The upper plateaus of the peak were very interesting, with unique alpine vegetation and little evidence of human activity. The view from the top was awe-inspiring.
What did you think of your group leader?
Abdullah was top-notch.  He had the most subtle and graceful way of keeping the trip organised and moving forward. (This is a trip that really cracks on, so organisation was key to ensuring we covered the ground and saw all the sites.) Warm, welcoming, good sense of humour and energetic.  He was very sensitive to the needs of the whole group, and I felt well looked after and safely led the whole time.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Need to be reasonably fit.  All in our group were - so maybe self-selecting - but we covered 50 mi in 5 days with lots of vertical ups and downs ( no technical climbing).  Bring as much bottled water as you can carry, as it is preferable to iodised water.  Exodus trip notes accurate and comprehensive; expect to be delighted by the local people that you meet. Be prepared for a rather tedious and slow process getting through customs in Morocco, but this was probably the only hassle I encountered.  Also, try the hammam!  Not sure what to expect, but it was very unusual!  One of those things you should always do, but expect a local, cultural experience, not a spa experience.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
A wonderful introduction to Moroccan people, landscape, culture and customs.  I am so glad that this is the way I have encountered this enchanting country for the first time.  The trip was also a great way to top up my fitness, especially going as I did right after Christmas.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Can't single out one, there were many: the scenery, the stars, the villagers we met, wonderful.
What did you think of your group leader?
Fantastic, he was a great guide and a lovely guy
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Bring snacks, and those tablets for the water that are mentioned in the trip notes anyway are useful, and stuff for blisters which I've never needed before but rocky terrain and they came in useful.  Moroccan money a must, you'll need it for something - however small - most days.  Also a thermarest chair helps for nights sitting in the mess tent.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
One of the best holidays I've had, highly recommend it.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
On the third day of walking, there is a fantastic descent overlooking a huge glacial valley with a village and some small square fields. With the sun in the sky, and the temperater perfect, it was just a magical couple of hours.
What did you think of your group leader?
Yahya was an excellent leader, with a very agreeable, relaxed style. A great bloke to be in the mountains with.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If you go in the winter, it will get cold at night. Make sure that your sleeping bag is up to condidtions that could and did get near to zero degrees - It snowed on our camp on Christmas night, making the first white Christmas I have experienced since I was a child.

I have travelled with Exodus before and this matched my earlier experiences in every way. It suited me well - a short challenging break away from the British winter, with good company. The trip was well provisioned and the cook 'worked wonders'. Colder than I expected during the day - mostly due to wind factor; so advice to others walking in February is ' bring the layers'  - but agreat week and I think everyone in the group thought the same.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Meeting children in themountain villages is always good ( but  don't want to get too 'shmaltzy' ( ? -  spelling ?)
What did you think of your group leader?
    Did a really good job
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
See above - ib February - bring the layers - also some days are 'challenging' -so be prepared - its all worth the effort.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
    No - said it all.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The views from the tops of the peaks and colls were fantastic. Spending time with local berber villagers in their homes having the classic 'mint tea' and argan oil spreads with freshly made bread. Experiencing a hammam at the end of the trip - not for the faint hearted!!
What did you think of your group leader?
Our group was led by Mohammed who is a berber. He was great - very kind and supportive (which helped me get over a few passes!). There was never enough he could do for all of us.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Make sure you take a good base layer to absorb all the sweat! My marino longsleeve was a life saver but I did need the extra base layer. Make sure you have a good sleeping bag as it did get cold during some of the evenings. Diluting tablets are a must for the water as iodine tasts like you are drinking metal! Make sure your daysack is not more than 25 litres - as you will be carrying it up and down the mountains! I had a 18 litre Northface pack with a built in bladder which really helped.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The trip states that it is moderate to challenging. We felt it was more challenging that the trip outlined. The landscape in the Anti-Atlas mountains is very rugged and there are some steady but steep climbs. I run regularly and thought I was fairly fit - would have benefitted from building up my trekking legs with a few long steep walks. Be inspired as even if you don't have the greatest fitness, you will (eventually) still make it up and down the mountains and enjoy yourself!

Wonderful trek through remote areas of Anti Atlas.  Good variety of scenery, terrain and campsites.  Just right for getting away from it all for a few days.  Can definitely recommend it !
