Had a great time, despite breaking my leg in three places at the highest point on the trip (the 2500m summit to Jebel Amlal). I heard the snap as I rolled my ankle in the snow, but thought it no more than a torn tendon.  Stuck it out despite the discomfort, and managed to see the trek through to the end. This was only made possible through our guide, Mohamed, arranging for me to hire an additional  mule (for the remaining three days in the mountains) and a camel (for the 4-day desert trek). Oddly, the new travelling arrangements actually enhanced the holiday.  Thanks to my 9 fellow travellers for their support (literally at times), understanding and compassion, and ‘un grand, grand merci’ to Mohamed for making everything possible.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

We’d regularly meet young children along the way who had trinkets to sell us. Hand-made by the kids themselves, their sale must have represented a valuable source of income for their families. Without exception, these young people were delightful, well mannered, full of smiles, and an inspiration.

Immediately after the accident, I was left with a nomad family for 2 hours or so, to await the arrival of the mules that would take me down to the campsite in the moonlight. They looked after me, made me mint tea, cooked me a meal, and even made a bed up for me. This is the kind of generosity and hospitality that you’ll meet everywhere on this trek. Morocco’s a beautiful country with some beautiful people.

What did you think of your group leader?

Our guide, Mohamed, couldn’t have been better – ever-watchful, supportive, informative, helpful and sympathetic to our needs. He even smiled his way through the obvious discomfort following a scorpion bite (a rarity that anyone thinking of taking this trip shouldn’t worry unduly about). We all learnt a lot about the country and its people, flora and fauna thanks to him. And as for his mule/camel-hiring skills in difficult circumstances........................

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

There’s only one day on the trip which is a little more demanding than the stomp through the Dales implied in the Trip Notes – the ascent of Jebel Amlal on Day 6. If you’re anywhere near fit you’ll have no trouble though.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

A night in a hotel between the end of the mountain section and the start of the desert trek would have been welcome. It would have given us a chance to shower, freshen up and mentally re-group for the trek over sand.

The food was first rate, given the conditions our chef, Lassan, had to work in. He conjured up fresh salads, soups and tajines out of nowhere. A miracle worker, and healthy food too.

My only grumble would be about the driver who transferred us by minibus on Day 9. He was reluctant to give way to oncoming traffic on the single-track roads, and often came close to hitting other vehicles. It seems this type of macho, inconsiderate driving is common in Morocco, but it's a danger to your customers.

Thanks, Exodus, for a well thought out itinerary – the scenery changes every day. Thanks too for the efficient pre-holiday service.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    there where many moments ,

the flowering almond trees and neat vegetable plots in the otherwise barren landscape

also walking by a nomad tent and beeing offered the best pitta bread ever

the 4WD drive on the "route national" througth the desert was quite something

What did you think of your group leader?

yahya ,as a berber himself ,was very knowlegeable about customs and the way of life in the mountains

in Oulad Driss we were able to have a very wellcome shower thanks to him knowing the locals

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

warm clothes for after sundown essential ,it gets very cold at night and warm sleepingbag

take a scarf and sunglasses for the desert, as even a light wind can feel like a sand-storm

I had extra sleeping-mat for warms and comfort

buy your souvenirs at the end in Ourzazate not Marrakech you get much more for your money

Is there anything else you would like to add?

i liked marrakech, but a guided tour should not include shopping

not at the beginning of the trip

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Realizing that having a shower every day is highly overrated! Long live wet wipes.
What did you think of your group leader?
Super knowlegable and experiened. Spent time with all of us in the group and tried to keep a steady pace for all parties. Would have been nice to have more than one guide, which we only had on one day. But I do understand if the group is all the same level, one guide really is sufficient. Despite being by himself, he did do a good job keeping an eye on everyone.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
While the trip is rated as "moderate" for walking/trekking some found a few of the days challenging. I understand why the trip is graded as it is and don't think it should be adjusted. Only one day was very long, with a lot of steep assents. The terrain, though, is very very rocky and much of the mountain and dune walking is very slow going. Pacience is required even for those who feel fit! Sturdy shoes designed for rocky terrain are best as well, anything less and your feet are going to hurt.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Was especially nice for Hussein to arrange the Auberge night between the mountains and desert, and welcome surprise not part of the Trip Notes (which are VERY innaccurate!). We had a little hut to sleep in, could repack the bags, and enjoyed nice hot showers on Christmas Eve. Such a treat!

A beautiful trip to some remote areas of Morocco

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The vastness of the Sahara. Amazing.
What did you think of your group leader?

Although not the worst leader we have had, Mohammed was far from the best. Due to heavy rains as we travelled to Jebel Sahro, he had to slightly re-organise this part of the programme. Th first 2 days were fine, but on the third day things went awry. I had an attack of vomiting whilst ascending Jebel Amiel, and myself and wife descended to wait the rest of the group. After half an hour the muleteer with Mohammed joined us and said he was taking us to camp. We descended for another half hour and then stopped and waited 1.5 hours for the rest of the group. (Another group member had an accident and was being helped down.) However, after arrangements were made for his care (staying with nomads- a mule was sent for him later) we were told camp was 1 hour away (this at 18.15) We finally arrived in camp at 21.35 and we were not moving slowly when in daylight. The whole group had walked in darkness over mountains for over 2 hours. By then I personally was exhausted and dehydrated due to my illness. Fortunately nobody was seriously injured. In the UK a mountain leader's certificate would be revoked for this. I appreciate all of this was not Mohammed's fault-people have accidents and get ill, but I believe he should have been more honest about the time to camp and more skilled in reading the capabilities of the group as a whole. Mohammed also had a tendency to walk in front, talking with a muleteer/cook/camel driver and several times was asked to stop to wait for the group to come together.

The complaints over, Mohammed was never anything less than sociable, helpful in camp, and gave us lots of information about local beliefs and culture.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
My gripes are personal and are partly due to an unusual set of circumstances-not all the leader's fault, but this is why only 4 stars-this is a stunning trip with magical landscapes in the Jebel Sahro range and Sahara. Well worth considering for a great 2 weeks.
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Lassan the cook was a magician, providing great meals in the middle of nowhere, on one gas burner and a cardboard box full of spices-all with brilliant presentation. The Masterchef people should note-it really doesn't get tougher than this.

Visit the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech-tranquil and beautiful.

As always nice bunch of fellow Exodus travellers.
