I really enjoyed the Sahara Trek, but then it ticked a lot of boxes for me. Ultimately, if your in to that kind of thing its an amazing trip. It really feels like your cut off from the world and in the middle of no where....completely isolated and trail blazing

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    - The crystal clear night sky and shooting stars.

    - The evenings round the camp fire - with the guides singing and playing music around the fire.

    - The top of the large dunes and being able to see the baron landscape for miles in every direction.

What did you think of your group leader?
The group leader was excellent. Brought the group together well and was very knowledgable and able to answer all our questions.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Embrace the experience....sand & all! I spent the first day trying not to get sand everywhere, but after a sand storm for most of day 2, I didn't even notice from then on. Everything was coated so pointless thinking about it and not worrying actually made me enjoy the trip more!

Also I would recommend sleeping under the stars for the entire trip - some of our group didn't have a choice (following some camels wondering off in the night and having to leave the Bedouin tent behind!), but this is all part of the 'true' experience and what I was going to do anyway. You will never get tired of the night sky.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The main things to be mindful of are; your in the middle of no where so there is no facilities what so ever.....so no showers/toilets for 5 days. There will also be periods where you will be walking either by yourself / in silence, so there will be a lot of 'thinking' time whether you like it or not!

These are not necessarily negatives, but if you’re not comfortable with the above, I would say this trip isn't for you. And if you don't like sand, that's a biggy too!

A massive adventure, far removed from everyday life, that reveals not just some beautiful scenery but a different, and simple, way of living.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Lying on my back, looking up at more stars than I've ever seen before; the gentle silence of the desert; singing songs are the campfire with our Berbers; jumping down the massive sand dunes; discovering that life without running water can be done - and, actually, it's rather nice.
What did you think of your group leader?
I loved the lessons that Mohamed gave every morning before we set off. He was always happy to chat and was the lynchpin of the trip.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    * The flies will drive you insane, so take a thin cotton scarf to wrap around your head during lunchtime naps.

    * Wipes will be your saviour; you can't take too many.

    * Don't forget a headtorch. It gets dark early and you won't be able to find your tent - or eat with confidence - without it.

    * If you're squeamish about certain cuts of meat, go vegetarian.

    * Walking sandals were the footwear of choice and far preferrable than boots.

    * Take a book or games or something for the long lunchbreaks when it's not feasible to walk in the heat.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
The walking on this trip isn't too arduous; it's more the mental effects of not having running water, toilets, home comforts, etc. But that is what makes it all the more special. The remoteness can be intimidating yet exhilarating at times. The sand gets everywhere but, hey, you're in the desert; what do you expect?! This trip truly is an adventure.

It was an outstanding trip from start to finish, culminating in lavish isolation to affluent foods and majestic walking with camel drivers and guide through high and low sand dunes and meeting new people within our own group on the trip together with the culture of Tunisia/Sahara.  Enjoyed so much sleeping out on my own mattress under the stars, outdoors with the hobbled camels and nature....

A great 100K trek throught the desert. Our guides were very efficient and kept us well fed and entertained in the evenings. Spectacular scenery and straightforward walking. Wild camping in the desert was a delight.

Funny how living like a refugee for a week turned out to be one of the loveliest things I've done!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
This trip isn't about inspirational moments; it is a beautiful journey.
What did you think of your group leader?
We in the group had all the fancy gear; head torches, fleeces, etc, etc, but in the desert the most important thing is knowing where you are going.  Mohamed led our group with knowledge, kindness, and generosity.  A great group leader.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Its really cold at night and in the morning - take thermals

Fantastic location, great group leader, but run on the cheap.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Sunsets in the sahara were truly magical.
What did you think of your group leader?
A very nice guy, did everything he could to make the trip enjoyable.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If you plan to do the trek in the winter, keep in mind that it gets really cold in the night.
Is there anything else you would like to add?

My main complaint, shared by many others on the trek, was that it was run on the cheap. For example, the tents provided all had broken zips and were very very basic. Imagine sleeping with an open tent, with wind and sand coming in, when temperatures go beyond freezing. Likewise, there was no first aid kit and when the cook got a nasty burn because he was cooking with unadequate utensils we had to find something from our own kit. What if something more serious had happened?

I don't know if this was a direct fault of Exodus or of the local agency, but in any case Exodus should have checked, and should do it regularly, that equipment is up to standard and that local staff are given proper equipment themselves.  In summary, somebody cut some corners.

    Exodus Response

We're always keen to receive feedback, and where necessary follow up all issues raised with our local partners to ensure we maintain our usual high standards. Please be assured that all the broken tents have now been replaced.
