EVEREST BASE CAMP

Written April 2008
I have just returned to the UK from Kathmandu where I left the accomplishment of a life-time ambition to get to Everest Base Camp. More than that, with the help of a superb Nepalese Exodus expedition team I managed an ascent of the Kala Patthar peak which sits at an altitude part-way between Base Camp and Camp 1. An achievement that I could not have accomplished without the superb 1 on 1 support of the climbing support personnel. This trip is tremendously challenging both physically and because of the high altitude involved yet the Exodus team on the ground made it ever so matter of fact and simple. They made sure that we were properly acclimatizing at a safe rate and pushed us along at a sensible pace which everyone was comfortable with. They made sure that our diet and health was properly attended to and that safety was always foremost in everyone's daily life. We spent 13 days on the trail yet it went by in a blur.On the trip home I have been reading the best selling book 'Into Thin Air' which describes the experiences of famous mountaineers who have conquered the summit of Everest and their experience on the trail to Base Camp which has been similar to my own with the exception that Exodus made sure that such wrinkles and pitfalls were avoided.Over the past 25 years, as a senior executive of major global corporations, I have travelled to over 125 countries and have had the good fortune to experience some of the most sumptuous hotels, resorts and travel destinations that are on most people's wish lists. On this occasion the Exodus team surpassed all my prior expectations that now marks this as the trip of a lifetime. Their diligence, sheer professional and personal attentiveness was remarkable and the best I have ever experienced anywhere. The quote from one of Lodges we stayed at sums up perfectly this experience "whatever you do, or dream you can, begin in! Boldness has genius, power and magic in it".
