Reality Check
Occasionally, as stated in our brochure, it may not be possible to follow the itinerary as planned. This may be for a variety of reasons - climatic, political, physical or other. In these circumstances we will make the best alternative arrangements possible that maintains the integrity of the original itinerary.
This trek is one of the world's classic high-altitude routes, involving a stunning circuit of 180km around a remote and truly spectacular mountain range. The Cordillera Huayhuash still sees very few trekkers. The route has sustained periods above 4000m, and should be attempted only by those who are experienced walkers and in good physical condition. Although there are 12/13 days of walking with eight passes over 4600m, distances walked on each day are generally short. Underfoot conditions are moderate and paths mainly good, without much off-trail walking, but there may be some boggy sections, and one descent through scree. Very occasionally we might encounter snow on the highest passes.
Campsites are usually clean, flat and grassy and always near a good source of drinking and washing water. 12/13 days' walking with full porterage plus 2 acclimatisation hikes; altitude maximum 5030m, average 4200m.
Grade C. You should be aware that the size of Peru means that this trip involves some long drives, particularly the one from Lima to Huaraz, and you should be prepared for this.
The buses used are comfortable and the scenery is outstanding. There will be several stops along the way to help break up the journey. This trip spends considerable time at altitude - please see the warning under the Health section below.
Normal group size and age
Normally 7 to 16, plus leader. Minimum age 18.

The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together.
All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please
see our Solo Departures page.
Fitness is important and you may have to improve yours before departure. Most treks at this grade compare to extended walking in mountainous terrain such as the Lakes of Snowdonia, but usually at significantly higher altitudes; climate and remoteness can also play a part. Previous trekking experience is desirable, but not vital if you are confident of your physical condition.
Walking & Trekking: Trips are wholly trekking-focused or simply include a significant number of walking days during the itinerary.
Wilderness: Visit the deserts, jungles, plateaux, tundra and mountains of all seven continents, including Antarctica.
