A tough trek through the magnificent Vilcabamba Range - a rare opportunity to explore beyond conventional Peruvian trekking routes

Llamas and ruins of Machu Picchu

This trek heads for Choquequirao, one of the best-preserved Inca cities and to where the Inca royalty fled following the Spanish conquest. The shrines and highways throughout the region were maintained until 1572 when the Conquistadors finally reached this remote refuge of the surviving Manco Inca and put an end to the dynasty. While the route is dominated by the 6000m peaks of Nevados Sacsayroyac and Pumasillo, there is tremendous diversity as we travel up from the cloud forest environment below Machu Picchu, cross the spine of the range, descend to the spectacular canyon of the Apurimac river, and finally climb out into the highlands again.
