Reality Check
This trek follows a high-altitude route, involving a stunning circuit of almost 100km (including optional walks on rest days) around a remote and spectacular mountain range.
On most days we will be trekking at over 4500m, with several passes over 5000m, and the trek should be attempted only by those who are experienced walkers and in good physical condition.
Although there are 11 days of point-to-point walking, distances walked on each day are generally short (between 6 and 16km per day). Underfoot conditions are generally reasonable, but when we reach the recently exposed areas you should expect to encounter scree and rocky sections of moraine which make walking difficult and slow. Although the departure dates of the trip are planned to avoid the periods of heaviest snowfall, any precipitation at this altitude will invariably be snow, rather than rain, and you should be prepared for this.
Campsites near the start and end of the trek are generally clean, flat and grassy, but in the higher areas will generally be rocky. Although the camp staff will clear a reasonably flat area for tents, and we provide sleeping mats, we cannot guarantee that you will have the most comfortable night's sleep!
11 days point-to-point walking with full porterage, plus 3 daywalks; altitude maximum 5400m (5450 for optional Yayamari ascent), average 5000m. Grade D.
You should be aware that the size of Peru means that this trip involves a couple of longish drives (around 4-5 hours including stops), and you should be prepared for this. The buses used are comfortable and the scenery is outstanding.
This trip spends considerable time at altitude - please see the warning under the Health section in the Trip Notes.
Normal group size and age
Normally 7 to 16, plus leader and appropriate local staff. Minimum age 18.

The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together.
All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please
see our Solo Departures page.
Those experienced in trekking for a number of consecutive days in the Scottish Highlands, will understand how tough treks at this grade can be – stamina is essential, as walking days are long. We recommend previous trekking experience, preferably at altitude; you need complete confidence in your physical condition and the ability to trek for many days over difficult terrain.
