Follow in the footsteps of the Moors on this ancient route through the Picos de Europa

In 722AD the first significant Christian victory over the occupying Moors took place in the village of Covadonga in northwest Spain. Often considered to be the start of the 'Reconquista', the 770-year effort to drive the Moors away from Iberia, several units of the Spanish Army have now been named 'Covadonga'. As the Arab army disbanded they retreated across all three massifs of the Picos de Europa through beautiful summer pastures with grazing cattle, crossing the Cares Gorge and passing the giant Naranjo de Bulnes. Our trek will cover some but not all of the route taken by the Moors, and whilst it is not the exact route, we are privy to some of the most stunning views of the lush green valleys and barren mountain peaks of the surrounding area. From Covadonga, the birthplace of modern Spain, we make our way to the highest village in Asturias. Leaving Sotres (1045m) behind we make begin our ascent of Pica del Mancondiu we head into the breathtaking Urdon Gorge, spending our final night in the village of La Hermida.
