How should I take money to Bulgaria?

As there are no banks or ATMs once you enter the mountains you may wish to exchang 75 - 100 Euros into local Bulgarian currency to cover these entrances and for the purchase of drinks with meals and
traditional handicrafts as souvenirs.

Please note that the banks located within the arrivals hall at Sofia airport are typically closed at the weekends, so please make sure you obtain Bulgarian currency either in your home country or before passing through customs into the arrivals hall. When ordering your Bulgarian currency it is advisable to request as small denomination notes as possible. Shops and restaurant in Bulgaria rarely have much in the way of small change and often refuse to accept larger denomination notes.

How tough is the trekking in this part of Bulgaria?

This trek has been specifically designed to provide a strenuous walking holiday in remote and largely untouched landscapes that offer broad vistas and immense scenic variety. The route is Grade C as the walking is rugged, frequently attains altitudes above 2500m and climbs some of the highest peaks on the Balkan Peninsula. Many days are challenging, involving steep and often sustained ascents and descents, with between 5 to 8 hours walking. The terrain is typically rough and rocky, and frequently involves crossing moraines and boulders, with the occasional easy scramble.

What is Bulgarian food like?

Meals will normally include four courses comprising a salad, soup and main course, followed by a dessert of fruit, ice cream, or cake/pudding. The cuisine reflects a mixture of Bulgarian, Greek, Turkish and Slavonic influences. We sample many traditional local specialities including ‘smilyanski fasul’, a delicious bean soup and ‘patatnik’, a local delicacy made with grated potatoes, onions, and cheese, then seasoned with mint and other herbs.
Jugs of tap water will be provided on the table with the evening meal. Bottled mineral water, soft drinks and alcohol are not included but may be purchased. There are several local wines that you may wish to try, including an excellent red ‘Mavrud’ from vineyards on the northern slopes of the Rodopi!

Do I need to take walking poles?

If you are used to walking with poles then you can take them with you. They are not essential though and the walk is manageable without them. It is personal preference but do remember to pack them as part of your main luggage to be stowed in the hold.
