This trip is not for the faint hearted, it is extremely challenging for all apart perhaps from the most seasoned Trekkers. There is something for almost everyone: I particularly loved the challenge of ascending col de tricot (600m of ascent in 1km) as fast as I could and I have never seen my 67 year old dad happier than after he realised he had completed the 161 km in 10 days... He couldn't stop smiling for days afterwards. The views take your breath away and the sheer variety of places in the three countries mean you are never bored.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Dad and I had a great time. Dad has never completed a physical challenge as daunting as this trip and he did not think he could make it almost until the very end when he made it to the top of Col de Voza on Day 12. His smile that day was definitely an inspirational moment for me. The group became really close and supportive of each other during the trip and certainly helped my Dad achieve his aim, with people from all walks of life with ages ranging from their twenties to their seventies lending a hand... Encouragement from the group definitely helped pull him and up and down some pretty steep terrain. Seeing Dad overcome his fears and doubts was really something quite awesome.
What did you think of your group leader?
Graham was superb. I believe that his greatest skill is closely observing people in the first couple of days, figuring out how to motivate each individual and working with each person to help them achieve what they are trying to get out of the trip. For example, after 5 days my 67 year old dad (who accompanied me on the trip) was struggling with the descents (of which there are many). Graham took Dad under his wing and worked with him, focusing on improving his descending technique using walking poles for several hours. Dad responded to Graham's patient instruction, learned a new skill and increased his confidence. This not only reduced his discomfort but also meant he could complete the trip with a smile on his face. Without Graham's assistance I am not sure he could have made it.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Two pieces of advice: 1. Do the camping trip. There is nothing like 2 weeks under canvas to get to know a diverse bunch of people and really experience the great outdoors. 2. Some training makes a huge difference to your enjoyment of the trip. If you come from London like me, make the effort to do dome big descents and ascents (like in Scotland) before you go. If you can't organise that, then an hour on the stepping machine at the gym really helps.

Fantastic first Exodus Holiday! Sensational scenery and walking, terrific group leaders and wonderful band of people on trip!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

So much of the trip was inspirational hard to pick, however the optional climbs and challenges that the group leader Graham Hickman allowed us to do must be among the best! Completing them with trip members Ovi and Kamal added so much, they were excellent company!

The Col du Tricot climb plus the views from the Tete Nord des Fours must have a special mention and will live with me for a long time!

The whole group of people on the trip were an inspiration too!

What did you think of your group leader?

Graham Hickman and Lewis were a tremendous team, Graham being the excellent mountain leader and motivator for "extra challenges" and Lewis the wonderful camp  organiser and cook.

I enjoyed their company and knowledge of the area immensely.

Would join another of their trips!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Do not hesitate to go on the camping tour, the group dynamics and camaraderie is priceless! Great spread of ages and backgrounds among group.

The sites were good too and certainly no hardships even at the two "basic" ones.

We were lucky with the weather any significant rain being overnight, however be prepared for some wet weather, as well as sun, it is mountainous after all!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
One of the very best holidays I have experienced, what more is there to say!

This was a great trip with an excellent guide [Graham] and splendid cook/driver and logistics man [Lewis].Wonderful views of the Massif; beautiful Alpine meadows and flowers; interesting historic villages; challenging [for a 73 year old!] ups and downs, but on a well-used track, with well judged stops for rests, photos and coffee with myrtle tarts at the many refuges. It was a great group [all strangers to me before, but no longer!].Excellent, spacious tents, and the tenting option made for greater camaraderie.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Impossible to single out: the whole experience was great - the sheer sweep and size of the Alps, with pristine snow slopes [usually] above, jagged 'needles' jutting into the heavens, lovely Alpine meadows and flowers, and tracts of Alpenrose; my first close encounter with an ibex; my triumph at getting a half way decent photo of a marmot with my little 'point and shoot' camera; the 'extra' climb up to the tete [head] of a high pass [Grand Col Ferret] with 3 of the more energetic of the group, with of course 'extra' views of the fabulous Grandes Jorasses; the exhilarating, hurtling 'races' down to the valley floors, with the reward of a refreshing beer in a garden full of flowers ...
What did you think of your group leader?

Graham Hickman - first rate. You might reckon an ex-Formula One racing driver might have a narrow focus.

Not Graham: not only was he a superb 'track' guide - reading the weather; being sensitive to how every one of a big [13 strong] group was travelling on a particular day, encouraging the weary, judging just when we could do with a break, cautioning us when the track was a bit tricky [not that there was any real exposure] etc. - he was also a fount of knowledge on the history of the area, the geology, and not bad on the vegetation. But the bottom line is the safety and comfort of the party. We had, with one small exception, benign weather, and there were no spills or damaged limbs. But had it been otherwise, I have not a skerrick of doubt that Graham would have known exactly what to do to cope with any emergency, whether an injury or severe weather.

    He exudes  professionalism.

Not to leave 'young' Lewis out of the picture. It was his first trip, and he was terrific. Didn't put a foot wrong. Cheerful and accommodating at all times, and super efficient. A pretty good cook for a Pom, and a wizard at getting everything ready for us: if he had time, he'd even put up our tents, a great boon for the weary walker.

Behind the scenes Mark was there to organise everything - a relief vehicle, or extra supplies.

It's a very efficient outfit all round.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Get as fit as you can before the trip - it's easier than doing it as you go! You're up and down 1000 m. or more each day. But you don't have to be a tiger walker: the guide judges the pace to accommodate the group. There are some options to cope with the conditions, or any disparity in fitness within the group [see above; our group was pretty cohesive, though].

Listen to the guide's advice. Graham's best tip to me was to buy a couple of walking poles in Chamonix on the first afternoon [I never use them in Oz, but they were absolutely invaluable  on this trip]. If he recommends, extra clothing, say, get it! And put it in your day pack!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The only criticism I can think of, apart perhaps from the quality of the [cheap] beer in the brewery at Chamonix [Micro Brasserie Chamonix], was that, contrary to the advertisement, there was no adaptor which fitted my Australian plug to charge my camera. Happily there were a couple of fellow-Aussies with adaptors on the trip, otherwise I would have been a very disappointed man.

Naturally, the quality of the restaurant meals varied, and I understand that sometimes there is no alternative in a hamlet or camp ground. The best restaurant meal was at Planpincieux; for the record, the worst was at Frasserands.

This was an excellent trip with superb views of the Mont Blanc massif from all angles. The views were tremendous.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The walk along the ridge of the Mont de la Saxe provided one of the most superb views of the trip, truly inspirational.
What did you think of your group leader?
Our group leader inspired total confidence. You knew that if any untoward event happened that he was more than competent to get you through it.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
The weather was kind to us but bad weather in the early and late season might preclude one from reaching some areas. I was glad we took the second trip of the season.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We camped and our driver/cook Ben would have our tents set up when we arrived at the site each afternoon and our bags would be placed inside our tents already. I'm sure we had more fun camping than the parallel hotel group.

I had not trekked in this area of Europe before but found the experience really wonderful. I took several hundred photos many of them of wild flowers which were the subject of an illustrated Powerpoint talk locally. Apart from that the scenery was very varied and each day was different. I enjoyed the climb each day.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
First, seeing extensive meadows of wild flowers with such a wide variety and very unexpected. The scenery was very beautiful and I certainly recommend the trek. Wonderful ice-cream (very many varieties) in the Italian section of the trek. The other trekkers were very friendly and all went well.
What did you think of your group leader?
Excellent and he allowed us some freedom and at the same time coped well with the differing speed of the trekkers. He gave help where needed and one felt confident with him.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
This trek involves a lot of uphill around 11,000metres so a certain amount of fitness is required so that one can enjoy the challenge. Obviously there was as much downhill which is hard on the knees. But at my age of 75 I did not suffer.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
One of the best treks I have been on!

This is a stunning trip. The views start off as fabulous, and simply get better almost every day. We took the camping option, which is both cheaper, and in our view more fun. The ages ranged from 27 to 68, so if you are fit enough this trip can be for everyone. It's rating of moderate to challenging is about right, with some long tough days, especially towards the end of the trip.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Walking over the pass from Switzerland into Italy was simply breathtaking.
What did you think of your group leader?
Simon (Si) , instilled confidence through out the trip. He judged everyone's fitness really well, and was always several steps ahead. We had supreme confidence in him if anything had gone wrong( which it didn't).
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Recommend walking poles, as coming downhill in the wet can be tricky, and sticks do provide extra stability.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Loved this trip. The campsites are on the whole really good. August in Italian campsites is a really busy time, so avoiding August is recommended, although the upside is the weather is superb. There were hot showers everywhere, except for two sites, and at one of those the drop toilets were not very pleasant (understatement), but it was only for one night......

Absolute classic just about sums it up.  In exchange for our (sometimes quite physical efforts) we were rewarded with stunning views and that "great to be alive" feeling.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The weather was almost always just right for the day (not too hot when walking, perfect sunshine on the rest days.)  The only rain enabled us to stay cool on a stiff climb "three col" day.  Seeing one of the refuges in front of a glacier appear out of the mist was pretty dramatic.

The most inspirational moment was funnily enough nothing to do with views.  It involved our guide Mel (Potter) squatting in the dust with a toy bulldozer and a Snickers bar describing the formation of morraines and other aspects of the surrounding scenery.  If you can picture the peanuts as erratics and the cracks from bending the chocolate bar as crevasses, you get the picture.  The clarity of thought and ease of explanation would have made any geology professor green with envy.

What did you think of your group leader?
On our only previous Exodus trip we were unimpressed with the group leader and so were not expecting anything special.  How wrong could we be?  Mel was amazing.  She was clearly very knowledgeable and informative (the two do not always go together!) on every aspect of the Tour from camp life through to plants, birds and wildlife.  She was friendly and amusing throughout and certainly made the trip into something special.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The books on the TMB suggest that a choice of clockwise or anticlockwise is possible.  Having seen the walks I would suggest that the Exodus starting in Chamonix and going clockwise is good, leaving the steep challenge of Brevent to the last walking day. The sense of elation having reached the Brevent top (and Mel opening the champagne) was out of this world and a worthy final stretch.

Ask to get Mel on your trip!!  Pascale the chef/driver/fixer was also fantastic

Is there anything else you would like to add?
It was so good we may consider doing it again in the next few years.
