A stunning trek through the highest Swiss Alps with the option to climb a 4000m peak
Using the thriving town of Zermatt as our base, this itinerary offers trekking amid some of Europe's most spectacular mountain scenery, including the greatest concentration of 4000m peaks in the Alps. Traversing the head of the Zermatt Valley, we will make two separate overnight trips from Zermatt, staying in excellent, well-equipped mountain refuges. Perhaps the most spectacular hut is the Schonbiel refuge right under the dramatic north face of the Matterhorn. Our final day is free to explore the valley and Zermatt itself, or for those looking for a further challenge, an ascent of the Breithorn (4164m) can be arranged.
| Day 1 | Fly to Geneva, transfer to Zermatt. |
| Day 2 | A short transfer to the Tasch Alp from where we trek to Flue Alp (2607m) with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. |
| Day 3 | Morning trekking towards the imposing Gorner Glacier; visit the glacier garden before continuing our descent to Zermatt. |
| Day 4 | A demanding walk as we climb again out of the valley, ascending slowly to the Rothorn Hut (3198m), situated above a glacier with great views of the Monte Rosa massif. |
| Day 5 | High level traverse to Schonbiel Hut (2694m) under the soaring north face of the Matterhorn. |
| Day 6 | Return to Zermatt by early afternoon, with a possible side trip to the Hornli Hut, basecamp for climbers attempting the Matterhorn. |
| Day 7 | Free day in Zermatt. Option to undertake the non-technical ascent of the Breithorn (4164m). |
| Day 8 | Transfer to Geneva, fly to London. |
