Remote trekking through forests and meadows in rarely-visited northern Georgia

Hidden away in the north-east of Georgia lies the beautiful and remote area of Tusheti. A few hardy families live there all year round but Tusheti is only really accessible by road for three or four months in the summer. Fortresses and mediaeval black slate towers dot the landscape - testimony to the days when the Tush defended themselves again raids by their neighbours, and each village has a revered pagan shrine 'khati'. We walk from village to village through fields of wildflowers, forests and summer grazing land, the snow-capped mountains to our north. Staying with local families, we glimpse a way of life which takes us back several centuries. As a contrast to Tusheti we spend two days trekking in the Greater Caucasus with the majestic snow-covered Mount Kazbek towering above us at 5047m.

Itinerary

Day 1	Depart London.
Day 2	Arrive Tbilisi very early morning, transfer to hotel; sightseeing tour of city including Metechi Church, Sioni Cathedral and baths.
Day 3	To Tusheti region, stopping at Alaverdi; cross Bani Pass (3000m) in 4WD; overnight in Shtrolta.
Day 4	Trek to Oreti Lake through alpine meadows; return to Shtrolta.
Day 5	Transfer to Omalo, visiting Keselo Fortress; pass gorge and trek through forests to Shenako.
Day 6	Walk to Dartlo (1666m) via Sonekhi Pass.
Day 7	Trek to Chesho passing Tusheti watchtowers.
Day 8	Walk from Chesho through villages with old shrines and vaults.
Day 9	To Omalo on forest paths.
Day 10	Transfer to Telavi, with picturesque stops en route; sightseeing and free time in Telavi.
Day 11	Drive to Mtskheta, historical capital of Georgia, for sightseeing; continue to Kazbegi.
Day 12	Kazbegi region; walk to Gergenti Trinity Church for wonderful views of Mt. Kazbek (5047m) and Gveleti waterfalls.
Day 13	Day walk in Truso Gorge.
Day 14	Transfer to Tbilisi via mediaeval Ananuri castle; afternoon free in Tbilisi.
Day 15	Fly to London.
