Today we head out away from the city to our desert camp in the Wadi Rum. On the way we will stop off at the Dead Sea for a chance to relax and unwind by floating on the salty waters. From here we then head straight for the desert, passing an ever changing landscape until the rock formations of the Wadi Rum become visible (Dead Sea to Wadi Rum approx. 5 hrs). At the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, we leave our coach and begin our 2-3 hour trek through the sand to our desert camp. Nestled beneath the cool shade of the tall rock formations our family run Bedouin camp is the final stop for the day, where we unwind and enjoy an evening of legendary Bedouin hospitality under the stars. Dinner tonight is cooked in a traditional way known as a zarb, in which a cooking pot is dug into the sand and left for most of the day to slow cook meats and vegetables.
This morning the excitement mounts as we set of to explore the ancient city of Petra. As a UNESCO World Heritage site and famed for its astonishing scale, this day is bound to be a highlight for many. Our trek begins at Siq al Barrid, or Little Petra, roughly 8 km away from Petra itself. The route follows winding gorges and climbs up onto view points before finally descending into the Petra complex.
You will then have the afternoon to explore the site and see its many splendours, a highlight of which is the famous Treasury. The work involved in carving this immense façade out of solid rock defies belief. In the centre of the city you will pass the houses and tombs of the more affluent citizens and also a Roman amphitheatre, preserved in remarkable condition. Beyond the city centre is El Deir, the Monastery. Its superb façade is carved into the rock and topped by a huge urn. After our visit we overnight in the town of Petra.
After breakfast we make our way on to Aqaba, Jordan's port and holiday resort, famous for beautiful coral reefs. We have free time to lounge on the beach, swim, or go snorkelling in the Red Sea. Your leader will be able to advise you on which are the best private beaches to visit as the public beaches generally do not have as many facilities. There are several good restaurants in Aqaba for our evening meal together.
