The best experience of my whole life thus far!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    There were so many...

Meeting the guys I was to share the fantastic experience with.
Waking up above a carpet of cloud
Getting to Gilman's point before sunrise and witnessing raw emotions
Triumph of getting to Uruhu peak still feeling strong enough to enjoy the moment without a trace of altitude sickness!

What did you think of your group leader?

To be honest, we didn't really see much of our main guide; Toshi. Although I got the impression that if any of us ever got into difficulty, he would have know exactly what to do.

The assistant guides; Modest, Heaven & Liberate were fantastic. All of our needs were taken can of and nothing was too much trouble.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Go 'pole pole',
Jury is out on the Diamox debate. I didn't take any drugs apart from anti-malarials on the hill and was fine with the altitude sickness.
If you can't find anyone to go with, go alone. I was 18 years old and decided to go along and met some of the best people possible!
Pick this route! I'm not just saying this. After asking all of the guides, their decision was unanimous.

    -------

Be sure to carry every detail of your flights with you. There had been a mix up with our return flights between Exodus and Kenya Airways which resulted in a missed day sarafi. Although Exodus compensated for this loss when we were back in the UK, it was an unexpected inconvienience.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The going is tough on summit day so be worned. It is also worth noting that the climb from Gillman's to Uruhu was tougher than expected so if you don't feel to strong at Gillman's, you many be at risk to continue.

It's a hard slog but standing at the summit of the highest freestanding mountain, viewing the curvature of the earth and knowing that you can't climb higher in Africa, Europe, Australasia or Antarctica makes it all worthwhile!

Great trip, wonderful company, excellent local support, and we all made it to the summit of Kili!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The Summit experience is hard to beat on a lifetime scale, but the sheer joy of the Leaders and Porters singing and dancing at the "Tip Ceremony" was really moving!
What did you think of your group leader?
The Group Leader was efficient and technically very sound. But the deputy-leader - Henry - was outstanding. He was positively charismatic! He also was brilliant on the approach to the summit, when I "wobbled" for a bit! Instead of panicking, he enabled me to get there! A hero!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Take some gaffa-tape, unless the African Walking Company have finally bought some new tents! You might need it!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Not really, though we did rather look like the poor relations at the various campsites! I guess at the end of the season, our kit (tents, toilet tent with no workable zip etc) was having a last airing before replacement!

Don't forget its the journey that is the memory, not necessarily reaching the top!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    1. Seeing & feeling the sun rise behind us on the final stages of the summit climb

    2. Sharing Obama's election success with jubilous Tanzanian guides @ Mawenzi tarn!

What did you think of your group leader?
Samuel's experience on the mountain told you more than any travel book ever could......
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    1. Ensure thermal insulation for camelbak as freezes on summit climb

    2. Take 2 x water carriers (1 for cold /1 for hot each day the guides have a rotary system to refill daily)

    3. Poles & knee supports a must for the descent

    4. A great "buff" can do wonders

    5. Pole, pole...slowly slowly......

    6. Be prepared to don 8 jackets, 4 pairs trousers, 2 gloves, 3 socks & still be cold on summit day.

    7. Take plenty of batteries and warm carrier case for camera. Many climbers head torches ran out on summit climb and camera unable to take photo's due to freezing.

    8. Be careful @ Nairobi airport for Kilimanjaro flight -- gates changed all the time, easy to wait @ wrong gate. 2 missed the flight -- easily done due to confusion @ Nairobi airport.

    9. Yellow fever certificate a MUST (take original not a copy...as i discovered). Its better to obtain visa in UK first, as eliminates interrogation @ Kilimanjaro airport

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Camaraderie with fellow climbers is a crucial ingredient to a successful trip, as i joyfully discovered

Being only a modest group of four people, we were able to get to know each other well and share in a great break which provided lots of fond memories. The guides were lovely, the food surprisingly good and the scenery breathtaking. The camaraderie really made the trip special though, and I'll always look back on it with a lot of fondness.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The whole group reaching the summit was a great feeling and really bonded us together. The guides singing at the tipping ceremony was also a highlight. Watching back the video I took always makes me smile.
What did you think of your group leader?
Our group leader Priscus was great and took good care of us, particularly when people fell ill due to dodgy food from a previous trip and, of course, mild altitude sickness. Our assistant guide, Henry, was a wonderful person and definitely helped to turn a very good trip into a great one.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
The guides are very good, so the well prepared won't need to much more advice. Remember to drink lots of water, and to take appropriate clothing. It can get very cold at high altitude, particularly once the sun goes down, so a good sleeping bag is a worthwhile investment. Alternatively, they can be hired locally. Likewise, a down jacket is worth having on the summit night.

This holiday was one of the most memorable experiences of my life and the way it was organised meant that the whole trip was a great experience

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Getting to the Uruhu Summit on the top of Kilimanjaro.

I couldn't keep the same pace as the others in my group, so the lead guide assigned one of the guides to me who then paced me - it meant that I got to the summit at my pace which was a more enjoyable experience for me.

What did you think of your group leader?

The group leader was fantastic as was all the team that helped us climb Kilimanjaro. They were very informative the whole way up and told us about the surrounding fauna and wildlife.

On Summit day itself we had 5 guides going up with 8 of us which was great. My group leader assigned one of the guides to pace me and without Jonas I don't think I would have got to the top.

The guides made sure they were aware of everyones limitions prior to summit day so were able to assess peoples ability

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Do it! Its a great trip and a great adventure. And even if you don't get to the top it will still make a fantastic holiday.

Any trip, no matter what the purpose, can really be make or breaked by the people you are travelling with. I cannot speak highly enough of the other 5 guys on the trip, everyone got on really well. This just made the trekking even more enjoyable.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
I suppose the vast majority climbers would say reaching the top, be it Gillmans Point, Stella Point or the Uhuru Peak. But for me, it was waking up every morning to stunning sunrise above the clouds. Though, a honourable mention must to go flying from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro on Precision Air and flying past Kilimanjaro, your first view and an awesome sight.
What did you think of your group leader?

Our group leader was Abraham, and he was fantastic in every sense of the word. Always willing to talk to us, whether it was on the trail, in the campsite or around the mess tent. Infact, I was lucky enough to have him personally guide me upto Gillmans Point, due to others moving ahead and others unfortunately having to desend.

He always made sure that everything was as it should be, right down to the missing Ginger Tea at breakfast one morning. Tip : although you might not like it beforehand, Ginger Tea is excellent whilst on the trek, then you'll probably go straight back off it again when you finish.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

For the trip upto Kibo Huts, just remember to take it slowly to help avoid altitude sickness also eat alot, even if you feel sick. I woke up a couple of times in the morning feeling sick, but as soon as I had some breakfast I was fine.

For the Summit Night, as much as it's hard not to try not to look up, as you will lights way above you and it immediately demoralises you. It really is a test of mental strength as well as Physical, don't worry if you go slowly and fall behind, just keep going planting firm steps (so not to slip on the scree too much).

Finally, the guides do have a medical kit but have a comprehensive one of your own. I struggled with a cold/cough most of the week and I could have really done with some lemsip and beneylin. The guides only had strepsils, which were ok but only temporarily helped.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

    (i) Make sure you are on the left hand side of the Precision Air flight from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro to see the mountain. The check in attendant did me a massive favour there.

(ii) Drink Serengetti lager - it's the best of them all.

(iii) Enjoy every second of the trek, because believe me it is over all too quickly.

(iv) Take plenty of memory cards for your camera, and you can never take too many photos or video footage.

    (v) The Arusha National Park Safari is good end to the week, otherwise you will just be sitting around the hotel

(vi) The Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort is excellent, and the staff are really helpful.

(vii) Go out on a village trek in afternoon of your arrival and see the waterfalls.

(viii) Everyone I met who was doing the Rongai Route was really friendly, and there was sense that everyone was in it together and no one wanted to anyone not make it. And no matter where you got on the crater rim, everyone was pleased for you becuase we all knew how much everyone had put into it.

(ix) This was first Exodus trip, and I'm looking at couple next year.

The most physically challenging time of my life!  It was a true life experience, but you need to have not just fit physically, but you also need mentally fit to attempt this.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
I was inspired by the sheer determination of my fellow team members to continue despite their exhaustion.  – It also proved that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve whatever you want – the sky IS your limit.
What did you think of your group leader?
The African Walking Company were brilliant - I can't rate them enough.  Our group leader, Hapson, was very good.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take aspirin - helps with the headaches!

Sleep with your electricals at night, ie, mobile, headlamp, ipod, spare batteries, etc

    Ear plugs and eye shades

Jelly babies for the summit night

Duck tape ..... if your sleeping bag refuses to zip up as it did for me!!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
My thoughts on this trip is it is a true test of your will power, physical and mental strength. I think had I realized just how testing the 5 days were going to be, I am not sure I would have been brave enough to do it. The group atmosphere contributed a lot to my success but also the help I had from the guide. For me, it’s a life experience, and in particular when this was my first time camping but I’m glad I did it.
