An excellent trip with well organised and professional staff. A good combination with Kilimanjaro and the chance to relax and recover with the safari afterwards.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Watching the sunrise at Gilmans Point with a cup of coffee before heading on towards Uhuru peak.
What did you think of your group leader?
Our group leader was extremely well organised and professional. He was always making sure everyone was ok and making sure we kept a positive mental attitude.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Read the trip notes and follow them. All the information is in there. Take dollars for the tipping so everyone is in the same currency and for the lodges as their prices are in dollars as well.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Have as much fun as you can and enjoy the experience.

Wow, what a trip! From start to finish this was really well organised. I loved that Exodus advised who their most recent staff member was who did this trip, a few weeks before we departed. Marta was AMAZING and answered so many of my last minute questions which was really useful. The trip itself was SUCH an achievement. Everyone on our group made the summit which was incredible. I found the hike to base camp ok, so long as I took it slow, but you have to be REALLY motivated and want to make the summit when doing the final ascent. Simply put, it is the toughest thing I've ever experienced mentally, emotionally and physically. In saying that, the guides were INCREDIBLE and worth their weight in gold. They looked after us, provided amazing moral support and were also a physical support on my way back down. You always knew you were in safe and experienced hands which is comforting. The safari after the tour was a great way to wind down and also a cathartic way to process the amazing achievement we all had together, and be able to talk it through with people who knew exactly what we all went through. A great bunch of people in our group from age 21 to 62 and we all got along really well.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

1 - There are many! An overall impression is that I have so much praise for the African Walking Company. All of them were incredible, from the porters who galloped past us as we slowly hiked our way up, having our tents pitched and our luggage in there when we arrived, to our incredible guides who were friendly, funny and knew how to look after us on the mountain to our incredible chef, Milton. He cooked so many amazing concoctions in the middle of a mountain at high altitude, it was just amazing. Every meal was a treat.

2 - And definitely making the Uhuru peak. What an achievement. I was suffering from mild altitude sickness on the summit ascent, and the guides were incredible and looked after me so well. I honestly didn't think I'd make it further than Gilman's Point but they helped me slowly to get to Uhuru and kept a close eye on me. Although I wasn't feeling great, I knew I was always in safe hands and they were just incredible. I look back on that day and still think, how amazing. I can't believe I did it!!

3 - Some of the sunsets and sunrises we saw from Kilimanjaro were just spectacular, and are ingrained in my memory.

4 - And John in our tour. At age 62 he made it to Uhuru. Not only that, but his hiking boots broke on Kili, so he had to continue on in borrowed shoes. Such an inspiration!

What did you think of your group leader?
Abraham was our group leader on the Kilimanjaro climb and was fantastic. Managed his team and all of us really well and with good humour. Nothing but praise.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take extra money for personal tips for your guides and porters. I had to borrow money on the mountain from others in our group. The guides are just incredible, and I wanted to give them so much more than I had brought with me, especially the guides that helped me on summit day.

A nail brush is great as your fingernails will get FILTHY!

Lots of loo roll and baby wipes for those charming, in tent 'showers' or wash wash time!

Leave behind ANYTHING you don't need from walking equipment, bags, to leftover medicines e.g. diarrhoea relief, water purification tablets, diamox (if you have it), paracetamol etc. The African Walking Company can use it all!

I took only one pair of walking trousers which were so filthy by the end. Everyone was in the same position, but I would have liked a clean pair to change in to half way through.

The down jacket I hired was SO warm. In fact I was overheating on the summit climb and had to remove layers.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Overall, a great holiday. The only small point I would make was the very early starts every day. Didn't feel like I got a chance to rest fully after the flight from London and every day you're up early. Would have loved a later start (even 10am) on one day, but this is a small point.

The African Walking Company are amazing and I would throughly recommend them.

The tipping guidelines provided once you're in Tanzania were really useful, however I did feel bad tipping our safari driver so much more than our guides as I felt they really deserved more than the guidelines suggested.

This trip is jus fantastic. The organisation was faultless and the guides were just exceptional. Climbing Kili can be dangerous, but we were in very safe hands, the guides were friendly and very professional, especially on summit night. This was a spectacular experience.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The summit night was hard, and when we got to the top, it was amazing. For me, walking back down, taking it all in was a good opportunity to reflect, and then afterwards, everytime I saw the top I felt a massive sense of achievement. Its hard to believe that we all did it, even having been up there at the time! I don't think you can prepare yourself for the emotions that you experience.
What did you think of your group leader?

Although we had one main leader, we actually had 6 guides. They were all excellent. The group leader would give us information every evening ready for the next day, which was useful and informative. He was the one who told us to start wearing our warm hats as although it wasn't especially cold, he said it would help with our headaches - and he was right!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Put your summit snacks in your pockets, and make sure you save some for closer to the top.

Wear your woolly hat from day 2.

    Book it!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Someone had tried to talk me out of doing the safari after the climb, saying that I should do the safari first as I would be too tired. However, having those extra few days with the group enabled us to chat about the time on Kili and reflect, as no-one at home truly understands what you go through to get to the top. Although we probably had the same conversation every evening, it was an excellent way of helping you process what you've done, with the people who were there with you.

This was an amazing trip and experience from start to finish. All arrangements went like clockwork, and we were well looked after throughout. I have so many great memories from the trip, and the whole experience is going to be with me forever.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
It is hard to choose as there were a few: the good humour of our crew from the African Walking Company stands out though, especially Musa our guide. Summiting obviously, but the camaraderie that got us there just as memorable. The banter in the group as we walked, and the wonderful views and scenery.
What did you think of your group leader?
In many ways Musa made the trek for us. He was enthusiastic, energetic, thoughtful and a good judge of character. He was also very funny!! His 'faffing' as he deliberately stalled so that everyone could catch their breath without it being obvious (well until we had twigged this was what he was doing!). He was intent on this being the best possible experience for us, and worked very hard to make this happen. When my husband needed to go back down the mountain Musa took him down, left us with the assistant guide, then RAN at least part of the way back up, meeting us close to the summit, which was a great boost for the rest of us at that point.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

You need to really want to do kili, as it is as much a mental as physical challenge. We were all really positive, and buoyed each other up through that long summit night.

Try and take some surplus clothes and bits and peices for the porters. Even though Exodus contributes to the Porters Assistance Project  it was obvious how poor these guys are, and how much they appreciate the tips and equipment and clothes we left for them.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Food was great throughout the trek (not so great at Kili Mountain Resort Hotel tho'). I don't know how they managed to cook the delicious three course meals we were served. The matresses we hired were well worth it as they were quite thick - and needed to be on that stony ground. A decent day pack which takes the weight on your hips and not your shoulders is essential. Be prepared to be dusty the whole time and take plenty of wet wipes.

Safari was great too, and also a good way to have time to absorb your Kili experience.

    Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy...

This is a fantastic couple of weeks during which time you are sure to make great friends with fellow trekkers.   The bonding time on the Mountain means friendships are well established by the time of the Safari which makes everything more fun.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
We didn’t have one trip leader because trip was split into 2 very different sections.   Naimann from the African Walking Company, Joseph, Reuben and Robinson were faultless guides on the Mountain.  Our safari driver was incredibly helpful, punctual and went out of his way to ensure we got the most from our viewing experience.
What did you think of your group leader?
I am not sure anything was inspirational but the whole 2 weeks was thoroughly enjoyable and is definitely to be recommended.    I am so glad I booked the Safari extension to the trek because in doing so we got to see (a little) of Tanzania.  This may have been from the bus on the journeys to and from the safari parks but it was still an eye opener to see Masai tribesmen and children tending to their animals.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
    • Hire a sleeping mat
    • MOST IMPORTANTLY -Take a Camelbak/Platypus and don’t rely on a water bottle.
    • Take plenty of hand wash gel.
    • Take tipping money with you on the mountain and take more than you think you’ll need.   When you see how hard everyone is working for you you’ll want to give more than you planned!
    • We donated equipment we no longer needed at the end of the trek.  I would plan in advance what (good quality) clothes etc. you can donate to the porters.
    • Take flipflops for the showers during the safari.
    • If possible, book the return flight a couple of days after the official trip ends and use this time to  spend a couple of days in Arusha.  I’d have loved to have gone on an excursion to a community centre or seen more of local life which I think is the only thing missing from the trip.

A fantastic trip which fulfilled a dream, a great group, great guides and porters and a real sense of achievement upon reaching the summit, Uhuru Peak. The safari was an excellent chance to relax and recover whilst being spoilt by viewing some of the most magnificent animals in the world.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Sunrise at Stella Point is a memory which will stay with me forever, as well as looking up and seeing that famous Uhuru Peak sign in front of me. We had perfect weather conditions and the photos we captured are amazing. Also though, to share the trip with some genuinely lovely people was great and although not everyone made it to the top, the team spirit was there till the very end.

As for the safari, does it get better than a cheetah just a metre away or a male lion within touching distance?!

What did you think of your group leader?

Florence was our group leader and he certainly is an inspirational man, great people's skills and a fantastic leader on the mountain, we were in good hands with Florence. I was fortunate not to need one to one assistance from any of the guides but consequently didn’t get the chance to get to know some of them like the others did. I am sure though if I'd needed it, they would have been there for me, like they were for others in the group.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Plan and prepare well. Don’t under estimate this mountain, it is a trek which any reasonably fit person can do but make it easier on yourself by getting that backpack on and hiking lots before you go, gym work is fine but it doesn’t beat getting out hill walking with your equipment. Speaking of which, make sure you have the right gear, borrow if you can’t afford it but don’t skimp on less than adequate sleeping bags / jackets etc. A good night’s sleep is essential and freezing to death won’t help with this. On the summit day I wore 6 layers on the top and 3 on the bottom but because the 3 of us walking together kept a good steady pace, I was a bit too warm! Take a decent lip balm and high factor sun cream. Jelly babies got me to the summit (they don’t freeze and don’t melt!). A small karabiner to hang my camera on from my waist band was my most treasured item, having it to hand at all times was ideal (except on summit night when it needs to be buried under layers). Trekking poles also highly recommended, essential for me on the descent. Also, drink as much water as you possibly can from day 1 and listen and take advice from the guides, they know their stuff!

Binoculars for safari are really useful, open sandals are fine and small canvas bag or similar is ideal so backpacks can be kept in the back of the jeep with other luggage, leaving more room for moving around the vehicle when spotting those animals!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Above all, if summiting Mount Kilimanjaro is a dream of yours, then book it now and go for it - you won’t regret it I promise! If you have the funds and time then adding the safari is ideal, it gives you time to relax and enjoy Tanzania and stops your family and friends seeing you fresh off the mountain! I've travelled with various companies too and I wouldn’t hesitate recommending Exodus to book and travel with.  Organisation, from office staff to the leaders, both on the mountain and the safari, couldn’t be faulted.
