  • SOUTH AFRICA WALKING & WINE

Being seasoned Exodus travellers we thought this trip would be more leisurely than most we have been on.  After all it is classed as moderate but the trek up Table Mountain, although short, is strenuous and the Wolfberg Arch trek has some scrambling going up the cracks and is a good six and a half hours round trip in very hot conditions.  The four hour walk along the Krom River on day seven is also quite rocky in places.  But overall, the scenery is beautiful and the weather excellent at this time of year (November).

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I cannot pinpoint just one so I have made my perfect day:

Breakfast at the Cederberg Lodges, expertly prepared by JP and Andrew.

Morning walk along the Shipwreck Coast.

Lunch of kingclip and chips at the Ocean Basket on the Waterfront Capetown.

Afternoon trek up to the Wolfburg Arch.

Dinner at Roca in Franschhoek, starter - scallops in bacon, main - venison, sweet - dark chocolate mousse envelope, all washed down with a bottle of Dieu Donne sauvignon blanc.

Then an evening ride up in the cable car on Table Mountain to watch the sun go down with a bottle of Windhoek lager.

What did you think of your group leader?

Ahh, JP Gardelli, he just oozes South Africa, one minute he is charming the ladies the next discussing world sport with the guys.  His knowledge of the struggles, both historic and of modern day South Africa, is impressive and he answers questions on flora and fauna effortlessly.  He even went out of his way to meet up on the last day to watch the international rugby between South Africa and England, we lost!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
The only advice is, it may be a leisurely/moderate trip, but you need to be fit.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We pre-booked for Robben Island but the sea was too rough and the trip was cancelled with a full refund, which was a shame because we were looking forward to going.

A great trip well balanced between some arduous walking and some excellent wine tasting. The guides (especially Andrew) were really very good and were instrumental in the high level of enjoyment all round.

Great introduction to South Africa, some good walking and excellent food - a bit short considering the length of the flight.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The walk to the Maltese Cross and Wolfberg Arch - the walk up Table Mountain was a slog due to the heat.
What did you think of your group leader?
They were good friendly leaders, however, they were not forthcoming with local knowledge. This was the first time that they led this particular trip.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Take lots of water on the walks and do not forget your walking poles - it may be categorized as an A/B but the heat is sapping.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
You have to pay for the wine tasting - this is not in the trip notes. Also in Cederberg it would have been good to have seen some of the famous cave art.
