Reality Check
GRADE C
The trek is a C grade more as a consequence of the heat, carrying all your own gear whilst in the canyon and extended wilderness camping than the difficulty of walking. We strongly recommend that you thoroughly read the Exodus grading system as outlined in the Walking & Trekking Brochure before booking this trip.
Walking Conditions The Fish River Canyon provides challenging walking over rocky terrain and wading through rivers. The first day of the hike is the most difficult as we find ourselves scrambling over large boulders. Elsewhere trail conditions are good, with little or no difficult terrain.
This is a backpacking trip and as such you will be asked to carry a small amount of group equipment as well as your own personal equipment and supplies whilst in the canyon. The food on trek will generally be dry/dehydrated meals, designed for camping expeditions. You should expect to carry a proportion of the food and water. 80% of the walk is spend walking in the river bed/along the river. When the river is full water for cooking and drinking will be collected from the river but if the river is low we will have to carry more water with us on the trail. Obviously the exact amount of equipment and food distributed to each member of the group will depend on the group size, but all participants should expect to carry 12-15kg (inclusive of group and personal equipment) on trek. Your guides will be able to provide advice and assistance in packing you rucksack locally - all other equipment can be left with your vehicle whilst in Fish River Canyon.
Outside the canyon this is a fully supported camping trip, all cooking and other camp chores are done for you - allowing you to get the most out of your holiday.
Normal group size and age
Normally 5 to 12, plus leader and appropriate local staff. Minimum age 18.

Icons explained
The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together.
All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please
see our Solo Departures page.
Fitness is important and you may have to improve yours before departure. Most treks at this grade compare to extended walking in mountainous terrain such as the Lakes of Snowdonia, but usually at significantly higher altitudes; climate and remoteness can also play a part. Previous trekking experience is desirable, but not vital if you are confident of your physical condition.
Serious Adventure: These trips are what Exodus is all about. Join us!
Walking & Trekking: Trips are wholly trekking-focused or simply include a significant number of walking days during the itinerary.
Wilderness: Visit the deserts, jungles, plateaux, tundra and mountains of all seven continents, including Antarctica.
