Frequently Asked Questions

About Your Trip

What will the weather be like in South Africa?

Summer months in South Africa are from October to April and the average daytime temperature is 25 to 30ºC. The average night time temperature is 10 to 20ºC, so pretty mild. The winter months are from May to September and average temperatures are about 10ºC colder at this time of year. The summer months are typically dry and warm, but the South Easterly wind can blow up to 70km/h at least a few times a month. This helps to cool things off, but can be a little unpleasant if one is walking in exposed areas. Most of the rainfall is in the winter but it is frontal rain, which comes off the Atlantic. Therefore it can rain solidly for 2 days, and in between there will be warm sunny days! Due to the ocean’s proximity to the mountains and the winds, it is fairly common to experience tabletop clouds on the higher mountains.

Any tips for this trip to South Africa?

If you are not good with heights, you should be aware of the 'ladders' in the Drakensberg. If you're unsure, just contact Exodus for more advice. It's also a good idea to take a decent camera with a good telephoto lens, as there will be so much to photgraph along the way!

How should I pack for the Drakensberg?

As you travel between camps on a regular basis, and you might often be arriving or getting up in the dark, ensure your luggage is easily accessible and packed so that you can find what you need. Consider having another case within your bag for underwear T-shirts etc. You do a lot of unpacking and re-packing while moving from place to place, so it's a good idea to work out a system for packing things to find them easily, for example using stuff bags or even plastic bags.

Simon & Anthony - Exodus clients

How much should I budget for optional excursions in southern Africa?

There are lots of extra things to see and do during the trip and the best way to calculate amounts is to check in the detailed trip notes, where they give as close an estimate as possible to what you may need along the way. Obviously some people will want to do more than others and will have to budget accordingly.

Jim Eite - Product Manager

Are camp beds provided on this trip?

Yes, comfortable camp beds are provided so it's not necessary to take sleeping mats as well.

South Africa Specific Questions

Any tips for local food or restuarants in South Africa?

You should definitely try ostrich Sausages with traditional 'Pap' (Maize & water), as well as snoek fish cakes and the 'sexy' bread in Napier!
Some nice places to try this might be the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay or the Sea Forth Fish Restaurant, Boulders Beach.

Ian Langford - Sales team leader

Is it easy to get a visa on arrival?

British passport holders and most European and Commonwealth Passport holders can obtain visas on arrival in South Africa for no charge. Please note that all travellers to South Africa are required to have a minimum of 2 blank consecutive pages in their passport i.e. a left hand page and a right hand page to enable an entry visa to be issued.
