Winter Snow Conditions Update: 05 March 2009

As we step into spring, Europe is enjoying some warmer temperatures and sun filled days.  We need not worry though, as a result of the excellent snow base built up over what has been seen as one of the best winter seasons in years, there is still plenty of skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding to done!

Dogsledding in RondablikkWith the cross-country season in the Alps drawing to a close they continue to be in great shape with more snow expected at the end of the week.  Chamonix in the French Alps has temperatures of –5°c today with excellent on and off piste snow being reported and with a sudden return to wintery conditions expected at the end of the week these great conditions look set to continue.  With similar temperatures the Italian Alps and Austrian resorts are also predicting more snow.  Many of the resorts still have most of their cross-country tracks open, with Dobbiaco still at 100%.

Looking further afield to Scandinavia, snow fell in most resorts throughout Norway, Sweden and Finland over the weekend and more snow is forecast.  Temperatures have warmed up considerably climbing from a very chilly –15°c to a more respectable -5°c.  Cross-country tracks are in great condition with plenty of terrain accessible.  As a rule the snow is crispy and hard in the mornings due to the overnight freeze but then softening throughout the day.

Skiing in KvitavatnAs an example, the Kvitavatn/Gaustablikk area is experiencing daytime temperatures ranging from -3°c to +7°c, with occasional cloudy days and light winds. Sjusjoen is dry and cloudy with temperatures during the day ranging from 0 to +4°c. Track conditions are good. The Valdres area – close to Hovda, Kamben and Synnseter, has similar conditions and weather.

After a relatively lean season for many European resorts last winter, by comparison 2009 has been absolutely awesome.  Many snow sports enthusiasts say that spring is their preferred time to head out to resort as the warmer temperatures and bluebird skies make for the perfect holiday, combining energetic snow based activities with long, sun drenched lunch stops.  So go on, grab you skis or snowshoes and get out there!
