Winter Snow Conditions Update: 16 February 2009

As half term for most schools around the UK hits, the snow out in most of the winter resorts is exceptional, with some of the best snowfall depths for this time of year on record.

The Alps are no exception with powdery snow being reported on piste and over 345cm depth being measured at 3340m.  The chilly temperatures of –13°c are helping to sustain these great conditions but do mean that you need to be taking lots of warm clothes with you when you head out there.  We received these photos today from our leader in Chamonix showing just how much snow there is!

The Italian Alps are in the same shape with several resorts reporting nearly 3 times more snow than they would normally expect at this time of year.  In Asiago and Dobiacco 100% of the cross-country tracks are still open and the good weather is making for idyllic conditions.

The Pyrenees have been covered with yet another blanket of snow, so much so that our chalet girl at La Feniere had difficulty finding the chalet car!  With over 3ft of snow falling in 36 hours and the days being filled with glorious sunshine the area is offering snowshoeing at its best.

Although Scandinavia has not received the amount of fresh snowfalls found closer to home, the cold temperatures have helped to preserve conditions and fresh powder can still be found.  With temperatures in some parts being recorded of -20°c thermals are a must!  In Norway Kamben and Sjusjoen are both predicting some light snowfalls today and tomorrow and with temperatures of a slightly warmer -8°c and only light winds.

All reports agree that this is one of the best winter seasons seen for years, so whether you are thinking of dog sledding through powdery snow, exploring the mountains on snowshoes or improving your technique on cross-country skis you simply couldn’t pick a better time to go! Enjoy!
