Photo of the Week

Two yearling cubs were content just to playFor those on the Akademic Sergey Vavilov in July '07 on the Exodus charter departure, the 28th will be a date never forgotten as everyone enjoyed two separate families of bears as well as a large male for five or six hours on snow ice. This is about as far removed from the ridiculous charade of white van man sightings in Manitoba as is physically possible. Fortunately this vessel is not only brilliantly stabilised and incredibly quiet, it also has side thrusters therefore can get absurdly close without bothering the animals in any way. This was a grail that had been worked for, as the past few days had been very misty.

Taken on a Canon 500mm IS lens the two yearling cubs were content just to play whilst mother moved off. Probably over 50,000 images were taken that day (with many deletions) and in lighting like this it is hard to go wrong, but sometimes it is nice to fill the frame and the cuddly pose, belying Polar bear's savage reputation has all wildlife fans and Athena card manufacturers purring.
