Migration 2010 - Herd, about it?

Seemingly unending charcoal lines still darken the plains north of the Mara River. Thousands have crossed but some thunderous showers last week have persuaded many to delay their commute south to the Serengeti. The larder door is permanently ajar for the predators during this period and lions, crocs, cheetahs and leopards have been replenishing their pantries with metronomic regularity. Among the highlights of the first two migration safaris were three crossings of over 30,000 ruminants, with lions waiting on the far bank, a cheetah with six baby cubs, several hunting dramas but most of all just the unparalleled joy of sitting among herds that stretch beyond view and comprehension. The movement of this amount of animals is capricious, but unlike last year it looks as though they may be around for longer than normal so anyone fancying a low season safari in late October or November could well find their luck's in.
