Two Down, Two To Go
12th April 2011
"There is something often visceral about a predator: the poise, the studied gaze, the continual policing of its beat and its territorial nature. But that is enough of team leader Ben Roseveare today. There is also something bewitching about the glare from a tawny tiger's eye, an eye that has spawned a thousand posters and even has semi-precious stones poaching its name. Talking of eyes, there is, as the hoary phrase goes, no 'I' in team, and the team today were nothing short of magnificent. Ben somehow put up with the increasingly fractious Paul and Terry as well as map reading his way from Deansgate through to the theatre of dreams without a blemish. Andrew cleared every path from cobbled streets to major trunk roads, standing stoically like Atticus Finch forbidding anyone to trespass in front of the tiger. Then of course Terry, he has run two with me now, I do not know who is hurting more but he is a colossus, please no-one remind him (or me for that matter) that he has two more to do. Even my wife turned up for the last eight cantering along with her Auntie, both Manchester thoroughbreds.
Is it painful, of course it is, this is already the toughest assignment I have taken on. Is it worth it, oh yes. The reaction all over Manchester was wonderful with shoppers and passers by performing industrial double takes before reaching for their cameras and hopefully posting their results.
Results matter in conservation, they are seldom simple though. Tonight a few miles from where we finished about 70,000 people will cram into Old Trafford to witness the Champions League quarter final second leg. Whatever the drama the result will be definitive, and probably positive for the home side. Tigers' future is less defined, but every bit helps and I am overwhlemed by not only the support of many clients on the course but also the funds gushing into a now burgeoning pot.
Two down, two days off, two more to do, this matters, oh God it matters so much ..... bring 'em on!" Paul Goldstein.
