Iceland Week
4th May 2011
Last year saw Iceland hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons, but now this intriguing destination is set to hit our screens again. BBC Four’s Iceland Week, running from 9th to 15th May, will feature documentaries on the Icelandic Sagas, showings of the dark comedy The Night Shift and the Icelandic film Jar City, as well as documentaries on Scandinavian crime fiction and Ragnar Alexsson’s Capturing the Faces of the North.
Complementing this focus on Icelandic culture, Julia Bradbury’s Icelandic Walk will be screened on 11th May at 9pm. Facing her toughest challenge yet, Julia walks along 60 kilometres of Iceland's most famous hiking route, a trail that culminates at the unpronounceable volcano that brought air traffic across Europe to a standstill.
Before reaching Eyjafjallojokull, Julia will encounter daunting mountain climbs, red-hot lava fields, freezing river crossings, deadly clouds of sulphuric gas, swirling ash deserts and chilling Nordic ghost stories.
Showcasing both the country’s fascinating culture and dramatic landscapes, there is a good chance BBC four’s Iceland Week will have you hankering after an Icelandic adventure of your own!
