Cuba: Modern cars now on sale

The Cuban Government have announced a ground breaking decision to allow the sale of modern cars within the country. 

Before now, only cars built before the 1959 revolution were allowed to be bought and sold by Cuban citizens. As a result, the country is famous for the elegant vintage vehicles gracing the streets. These beautiful machines have become part of the iconic image of Cuba, especially the capital city of Havana, luring many classic motor enthusiasts to Cuban shores.

Under the new regulations this is all set to change, and predictions are already rolling in that many of the finned Chevrolet’s will be replaced with imported Toyotas or Korean cars. Fears that many of the 1950s cars will no longer be commonplace have already begun to circulate.

With all this having been set in motion by Cuban President Raul Castro, the country seems set to change significantly over the new decade, ushering in a new era in Cuba’s already turbulent and fascinating history. Many of these changes will no doubt improve the lives of average Cubans; however, we’re sure we won’t be alone in mourning the passing of these wonderful old cars.

There is still a chance to see this evocative sight before it is lost to the photo gallery of modern history.
