Go with the (lava) flow...

Etna

As pilgrimages to the raw power of nature go, walking on the surface of an active volcano has to be the holy grail. Whether you tread the tectonic theatre of Iceland, dare to stride the smouldering shores of Sicily’s Aeolian islands or wish to wander amongst the wildlife of the Galapagos island craters, a volcanic voyage is sure to be something to marvel.

Even well-travelled wildlife presenter Kate Humble has succumbed to the lure of lava. BBC’s new show, Volcano Live, starts tonight at 8pm and luxuriates in all things lava. The four-part series follows the exploits of Ms Humble and geologist Iain Stewart as they traverse the globe in search of the most explosive of natural wonders.

However, we advise watching with caution. Landscapes draped with hard-baked lava flows and topped with smouldering conical peaks are sure to fire your imagination, and certainly your wanderlust. You may well find yourself browsing our various volcanic vacations in days to come …
