Latest Snow Report
18th February 2013
Last week most European destinations have seen important snowfall, consolidating what is so far one of the best winters in the last few years. February so far has been an excellent month everywhere!
Our local partners in Kvitavatn, Norway have sent us some pictures of the incredible amount of snow they currently have, which makes for some excellent off-piste skiing. Beautiful fresh powder so perfect you’d want to dive into!
Chamonix still boasts over 3.5metres of snow at altitude. A solid cover that doesn’t seem to melt away and should even get “topped up” in the week to come.
The Pyrenees are having an extraordinary winter too with over 2 metres at altitude. So conditions have been ideal for skiers and snowshoers alike in the last couple of weeks, with sunny days and cold temperatures.
It is sunny today in Switzerland, where around 20cm of snow fell in the last 7 days, and there is more to come with cold temperatures (around -10) and light snow showers on the forecast for this week.
The Dolomites also received around 20cm last week and around 50cm are to be expected this week!
In the Tatras, there is currently 2 metres of snow and the forecast is for some light showers this week and heavy snowfall next weekend.
Bosnia should also see some fresh snow this week as temperatures in Sarajevo and its surroundings stay low, particularly towards the end of the week.
Whatever your weapon, skis or snowshoes, there is enough snow to roll around in so enjoy!
Snow Report: 04 February 2013
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
The temperatures have been milder in most areas in the last week and some days the conditions weren’t great for cross-country skiers. But thankfully the highlight of this weekend has been the return of important snowfall in most regions!
I have just come back from a great week in Seefeld, where our last couple of days of skiing were marked not only by our progress in skating technique but also by the size of the snowflakes falling from the skies!
The Dolomites have had similar conditions. Our leader Andy emailed us today saying that “it hasn’t stopped snowing in Dobbiaco”. Some snowfall and sunny spells are on the forecast for this week.
Chamonix is still in the lead with its 350cm of snow at altitude. The forecast is for more snowfall in the coming days, so conditions are still great out there.
As the temperatures slowly drop, the Pyrenees are expecting the snow to fall tomorrow and Wednesday before the sun returns at the end of the week.
In Eastern Europe, the forecast for the Tatras is for low temperatures and light snow showers, with more to follow at the weekend. Most snow is at Strbske pleso, with a reasonable base of approximately 1 metre at Smokovec and Tatranksa Lomnica.
We received this message from our operator in Mosstrond “We are drowning in snow and the sun is out”! Ideal conditions then and it should continue with some snowfall forecast for the beginning of this week.
Still in Norway, Kvitavatn continues to enjoy a good snow covering, with more predicted on Wednesday.
Fantastic conditions in Bosnia too: fresh snow has been forecast for this week up in the mountains around Sarajevo, to add to the 2 metres already on the ground!
Good news all round … wherever you are heading to this February enjoy your time in the snow!
Snow Report: 18 January 2013
As the snow falls over the Exodus HQ today, we are delighted to tell you that conditions out in the European mountains are excellent too!
In the Pyrenees, after a big snowfall in the last few days, Bolquere/Pyrenees 2000 boasts 145cm of snow on the ground whilst around Luchon there are up to 190cm at altitude.
The Dolomites saw some milder weather recently, but this week the snow has returned. Our leaders out in the Alta Pusteria sent us this amazing picture of one of our group returning to the hotel after a day out in the snow!
Some fresh snow in Oberammergau (Germany) and in Seefeld (Austria) too, where the forecast is for more snowfall next week.
Chamonix's fantastic winter continues with over 3 metres of snow at altitude, and more forecast for the next few days!
At Basecamp Oulanka too, the conditions could not be better and with more snow on the cards, your picture postcard landscape should be ready for your arrival.
Good conditions in the Tatras as well, with cold temperatures and a solid snow cover. The weekend should see the return of some fresh powder, with further snowfalls forecast for next week.
All you have to do is make it out of the UK where we don’t quite know how to deal with snow and head to where the professionals know what to do with the white stuff!
Snow Report: 04 January 2013
2013 may just be the best year to try a winter trip! With incredible snow conditions across Europe, frequent snowfalls, ideal temperatures and sunny spells, it is the perfect winter to go enjoy snowshoeing, try a multi-activity week or discover cross-country skiing!
Since Christmas last week, the Alps have received up to 60cm of fresh snow, while in Scandinavia, Finland and Sweden have seen their base depths increase by up to a third in just one week!
In Eastern Europe, Spindleruv Mlyn has kept a nice 40cm snow cover since before Christmas. The forecast is for more snowfall tomorrow, which will bring a nice additional layer of powder.
On average in the French and Swiss Alps, the snow base is a solid 1 metre, to ensure great conditions for the weeks to come. Chamonix boasts the deepest snow base in France with an incredible 3.5 metres of snow on the higher parts of Argentiere.
In the days following Christmas, the Tyrol received about 20cm of fresh powder, and more snow is forecast for this week, particularly in Austria. In the Italian Tyrol, the Alta Pusteria (Dobbiaco, Versciaco, Villabassa…) has enjoyed possibly the best December for snow in the last few years. The solid snow base ensures good quality loipe for the cross-country skiers to enjoy in the sunshine (also on the forecast this week).
The Pyrenees have received about 50cm since mid-December. Although it hasn’t snowed in the last 7 days, cold temperatures and sunny days have provided perfect conditions for skiers and winter trekkers.
The general forecast is for more snowfall across the European Mountains, which should provide a nice “top-up” to the already solid snow bases and some incredible conditions for an active winter.
Happy New Year from the Exodus Winter Experts!

With over 40cm of snow falling just over the weekend in Kvitavatn, Norway promises an incredible festive season!
Over in Sweden, the Icehotel is looking incredible, with once again some extraordinary designs. And with plenty of snow to come, it should be the perfect Christmas setting.
In Finland, the cold temperatures have maintained a nice base after some heavy snowfalls earlier this month. It is cold and sunny at the moment, but the forecast is for more snow on the next 10 days.
The Pyrenees have seen a great start this year with up to 90cm around Luchon. And in the rest of France, the Alps are under metres of snow! There were snowfalls up to 80cm in 24hrs in the Southern Alps.
Across the border in Italy, the Dolomites have a solid base of 20 to 70cm of snow and add to this some snowfalls are expected at the end of the week. Further South, Mount Etna received a lot of snow last week leaving about 20cm at altitude.
Austria saw some heavy snowfalls in the last weeks providing a great cover. Cold temperatures and some more snowfalls are currently on the forecast, promising lots of fresh powder for Christmas.
So time to dust off the skis, snowshoes and boots, and enjoy a snowy end of the year!
Merry Christmas from the Exodus team!

In the Dolomites, there is already up to 65cm of snow and with some cold temperatures predicted this week, this should maintain this base of snow before more of the white stuff arrives towards the beginning of next week.
The Austrian Tyrol has been blessed with abundant snowfalls already this season and is expecting some more towards this end of the week.
