What is the best way to take cash to Cuba...are there really no cash dispensers?

We are departing on March 28th & have been advised to take sterling cash or euros. I'm taking sterling. There are some ATM's but only in Havana & some large towns. Also they are not always reliable. Remember any cards that are supported by American banks like Mastercard can't be used if you do take a card.

Have a fab trip!

There really are very very few ATMs, and as Ruthie posted, they will not work with Amex or Mastercard or other US owned cards. I was able to use my Mastercard over the counter in one bank, which was an interesting experience as everything that appeared on the screen had to be written down by hand and then double-checked and cross-referenced with my passport - it took about 15 minutes to make a basic chip & pin withdrawl! I suggest you take Stirling and change it all as soon as you arrive. You will be able to change back any unused currency when you leave. Drinks are incredibly cheap, but food is comparatively quite expensive and dont forget to budget for tipping your driver & guide and any optional trips too - I didnt take quite enough money, hence my trip to the bank! Good cigars are also quite expensive, so take extra money if you are into them or buying them for others.
