Hello there Galapagos Explorers

I have just popped on to see if I can have a chat with my fellow travellers.  But it seems I am the first one on.

I am looking to chat to people before our great adventure, and exchange hints and tips, and to get to know people.

Speak to you soon.

Hi Louise

I'm going!  My Dad and I are travelling together (my Mum and my husband couldn't go).  It would be great to chat before we meet in Quito.  I am so excited about the trip; I can't believe it is only 5 weeks away!

Yes can't believe it is 5 weeks till we fly.  It seems such a long time since I booked the trip.

I am travelling on my own.  I tend to go away on trips like this every year, mainly on my own as friends are uable to get the same time off, or in most cases they have not such the great sense of adventure like me.

Trying to type out a list of things to pack at the moment.

I have booked to see a travel clinic next week for a list of jabs etc.  I think I am covered, but just need to really check on maleria pills...Think we will be ok as it all over 1,500m.  But better to check (be safe then sorry).

My last trip I chattered with a few people online before we went, but it was a big group so it was hard to discover at first who you had been chatting to online.

Have you been to South America before ?? This is my first visit to South America.

Louise

Hi

I haven't even started thinking of what to take yet!  I had a look at the vaccinations we'll need and I think I'm already covered for all of them as I've done quite a bit of travelling over the last few years.  I also researched the malaria situation and it seems that we don't need to take prophylactics as we are in low-lying areas (and Quito is safe).  There was, however, an outbreak of Dengue Fever in the Islands in May.  Not sure about the situation now, though.

This will be my first visit to South America.  It's always been on my 'to do' list so I am very much looking forward to it.

Are you flying from the UK?

Loubee

Yes I am travelling from the UK.  First of all I fly into Gatwick the day before.  Then overnight stay in hotel to check into Heathrow the next day.

I have not made a list of things I need yet.  Need to do some research into the temperatures by day and night.  Have you any idea.  Then I can decide what to pack.  I will look again at the dossier of things to pack.

Hi

I'm sure you will all love the Galapagos and Quito. I spent 2 months on the Galapagos (1 week cruising) and travelling around Ecuador. Isabella (most westerly / largest island) was my favourite.

Old Quito is beautiful too.

Like all countries, there are scams to try and part the tourist with their money. I would be wary of a scam that is very popular in Quito. People approach you and point out that you have some sort of 'goo' (yoghurt, mayonnaise, spit)  on you/your backpack. They come prepared with tissues, offering to clean it off. Whilst you are distracted, they take your wallet etc. They often work in two's or three's, and can be dressed very smartly.

On the crowded trams/buses, fellow travellers managed to have money taken from their clothing, when people discretely slashed their clothing.

We were tartgeted once by a child, allegedly trying to sell us a comic which they had opened up, covering their hands. They pushed their hands into our waist, trying to pick the money belt.

Other than that - I'm sure you will have a fantastic time!

Hi Louise

Hope you are getting there with packing and deciding what to take.  I have pretty much everything and just have a few last minute things to do now.

What hotel are you staying in on Saturday night at Heathrow?  I thought we could perhaps meet for a drink if we are staying quite close to each other.  I arrive in at around 7pm.  I'm staying at the Park Inn.

Hello Lexy.

Me too-Got my bag out and pile of clothes and equipment everywhere to pack.  Going to start packing this weekend.  I am bringing my own sorkle gear so that will take up a bit of room.  I dont really like packing at the last minute in case I forget things.  I have made a 'to pack' list, but it gets bigger every day.

I get into Gatwick lunch time on the Saturday then will get the coach upto Heathrow.  I am staying at the IBIS Hotel.  It would be nice to meet up.  I will see how close you are to me.  Yes maybe we could meet for dinner/drink the Saturday night.  I dont like doing the long flights on my own.

The travel clinic at doctors surgery said I dont need maleria tablets..Is that the advice you got ?

Louise

Loubee

Just realised I spelt SNORKLE wrong in my last message.  Going to get out my snorkle gear later.

Cant believe we will be travelling in a weeks time.  I am going to start packing today.

I will look up later to see if our Heathrow Hotels are near each other.

 Speak soon, Louise

Hi

I've checked to see how close our hotels are to each other and they are at most 1km apart.  It looks like my husband might be coming with me to London to stay overnight as he has decided to go to Melbourne while I'm away for a couple of weeks and he'll be flying out of London.  I'm not sure if we'll have time to meet for a drink by the time we get in to the hotel (I think around 7)  and then go to meet my dad off his flight from Glasgow but how about I give you my email address and we can exchange mobile numbers (don't want to post on here!) and we can see how we are for time on Saturday?  My email address is lexylacy@hotmail.com.

Hope your packing is going well.  I got a few last minute things today, now I just have to try and fit it in my bag! I'm not taking malaria tablets; the advice was that they aren't necessary for the areas we are going (only Amazon areas).

Whoopee, not long now :-)
