The Exodus kit bag

Wife & I are doing Kilimanjaro shira route next year.

It looks as though the exodus kit bag is 63 litres (30*30*60).  Do we need to fit our sleeping bag and mat in this bag - it seems quite small (particularly for wife, who needs to take everything, inc the kitchen sink!) for the stuff we need

(Naturally, we have day sacks for our personal bits and bobs, but they aren't huge 40-50 litres each)

Did this route in August, yes I had trouble too! For the climb both mat and sleeping bag go in kit bag, the porters put them in big waterproof bags to carry daily. Other people in the group hired sleeping bags and mats out there (think you have to book them) so they had more space in the kitbag for travel then could leave some stuff at the hotel. The hired mats were way too big for kitbags so they carried them separately so I suppose if you get the mat over there it could be carried separately.  In all honesty, you get so dirty that clean clothes are actually irrelevant, they're dirty (volcanic dust gets everywhere) before you even put them on! Flannel, wet wipes, more wet wipes, even more wet wipes and clean underwear & t-shirts/tops and the rest you just keep hindsight I'm shocked I did that but thats how it is!

Be prepared for the cold at night, do as you're advised, you'll have a great time, the guides are great and they supported all 9 of us to the top together.

I did the Rongai route in Jan this year with a 4 days safari extension and managed with the Exodus kitbag and a 36L rucsac. I packed my sleeping bag and thermarest in the exodus bag and just had to be v strict with myself about what else I packed. The bag fits more than you would expect if you pack well and have a decent stuff sac for your sleeping bag to squash it down to a good size. As previously mentioned anything you wear on the trek gets dirty v quickly due to the dust but as you are unable to shower for 5-6 days just embrace it and take lots of wet wipes! We found we could leave some clean clothes in a stuff sac at the hotel. Almost everyone in our group took the exodus kit bag so I'd advise you to fasten something to it that will help you to easily identify yours when you reach base camp each day.

Have a great trip
