A wonderful two weeks in a wonderful country. The 'wild' in the trip title relates not only to the wildlife, which is the main focus of the trip, but also to the locations of the lodges and hotels, chosen to be in spectacular and often remote areas. The accommodation and food was of very high standard indeed, so you can enjoy the wildness in real comfort! The tour was very well planned, with days in the hot and humid lowlands followed by days in cooler cloud forests, and usually staying two or three nights at each place to make the most of the wonderful locations. There was so much variety in such a short time, and the birds, flowers, butterflies, frogs and other wildlife were 'amazing'!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

So many to choose from: just experiencing being in tropical rain-forest for the first time, listening to the sounds of frogs or howler monkeys from my bed, watching monkeys and macaws and humming birds, seeing sloths and the resplendent quetzal. The tropical fruit at breakfast was good too!

What did you think of your group leader?

Johnny was fantastic. Hard to imagine how he could improve! His knowledge of all the wildlife and his enthusiasm made the trip really special. He looked after all of us with great care and support too. The driver, Alan, did a brilliant job too.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take good waterproofs and a small umbrella - it will rain (at least in July!) Some of the trails were a bit steep and slippery, so lightweight waterproof trekking boots or shoes with a good grip are a real help - closed shoes (not sandals) and long trousers were recommended for the rain-forest trails. Binoculars are essential to get the most from this trip. Insect repellent is needed for the walks and boat trips. Towels, soap, and shampoo were provided everywhere and you can drink the tap water everywhere! The lowlands are very hot and very humid, so plenty of changes of lightweight clothing help.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We added extra days at the start and end to take advantage of the direct flight from Gatwick to San Jose, and to recover from the flight a bit before the holiday started. The first hotel has beautiful tropical gardens, so this was a real joy.
