Jordan to Egypt: Nabateans and Pharaohs

A well organised trip that travels through many years of history and very different civilisations.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many sights and moments to choose from in this trip! Jordan: Wadi Rum: sunset, traditional Bedouin dinner and stargazing. Petra: aside from the famous treasury, Mikhled’s alternative walk up through the royal tombs with panoramic views and the climb up to the monastery to dinner with a Bedouin family. Egypt: The temple and the ecolodge at Abu Simbel. Visiting Luxor temple by night, rather than the following morning as per the itinerary. The felucca ride on the Nile.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jordan: Mikhled was our tour leader in Jordan and was absolutely fantastic. From the very first day we felt welcomed. He had great people skills and was very personable, looking out for everyone. Since we were only an intimate group of 4 people, he took us to small local family restaurants, had dinner with a Bedouin family and he tried to introduce us to the everyday life of the people. He was very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and engaging, and we learnt so much about the sights, culture, history as well as daily life of the Jordanians in our short time there. On travelling from Petra to the airport for the flight to Cairo, Mikhled suddenly stopped the van and disappeared, only returning to have bought us a bag of falafel to eat whilst we waited at the airport! He also WhatsApp'd us the day after we had flown to Egypt to check up on us and make sure we had arrived safely, which was very thoughtful. We would, without a doubt, highly recommend him as a tour leader for anyone looking to visit Jordan. Egypt: Our tour leader in Egypt was Yousef and he was excellent as a teacher and educator in the hieroglyphs and history of ancient Egypt and we really enjoyed his explanations and how he brought the hieroglyphs to life.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip certainly covers a lot in the two weeks, and could be very tiring for some, especially in Egypt where the itinerary is more demanding with lots of travelling to get to more remote sights. Meal times in Egypt were quite irregular, so wise to have a supply of snacks. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper!

Suggestions

It was a good decision by Yousef to visit Luxor temple in the early evening, rather than the following day. It would have been good to have then visited the temples at Karnak earlier the next day, rather than at lunchtime when it got much hotter, and then going straight to the airport for the flight to Cairo. Many of the sights we visited in Egypt felt rushed. For instance we only spent about 40 minutes, which included the walk from the entrance, at and around the main pyramid, before then being driven to a viewpoint overlooking all the pyramids. We were expecting more time to wander around the other pyramids, especially as no-one opted for the climb inside the pyramid or the camel ride. Having then visited the sphinx and the Cairo Museum we were then deposited back at the hotel by 13:30, with the rest of the day free. It would have been nice to have more time at the pyramids, stop for lunch and then visit the Cairo Museum, rather then rushing everything into the morning. We were thankful for Omar, who assisted Yousef in Cairo, for arranging some falafel wraps to keep us going. Everyone in the group wanted to stay longer at Abu Simbel but we were given limited free time, and ended up being back at the hotel early. Similarly everyone felt rushed on the day travelling up from Aswan to Luxor. We understood that there was a lot to fit in that day, but we still arrived in Luxor in good time and could have spent more time at some of the sights, especially Kom Ombo, where we had limited free time and felt the visit to the crocodile museum was curtailed very quickly.

Felt too rushed

We saw a lot but much of the time it seemed we were being rushed through it all. We’d get a whistle-stop tour and explanation then be told we had half an hour or so to take any photos etc. This was particularly true in the old part of Cairo, which was effectively a 15 minute trot towards the bazaar with me being told to get a move on every time I stopped to take a picture. Even the paid for optional extra trips seemed rushed. I expected to see more of the Citadel than just the mosque, for example. I’ve done a lot of full-on trips recently, and never felt so short of time on them.
In terms of the itinerary I would say that Alexandria is worthy of more than just a morning. The timing of the boat trips in Aswan didn’t work well. We arrived at the island for our ‘evening barbecue’ before 4pm, much too soon after lunch, and were gone again within an hour and back at the hotel just after 5. Edfu temple was incredibly crowded. For some reason every boat disgorges all its passengers for the same 6-7 am timeslot, then rushes on to Esna to sit in a queue for the lock for over an hour ….
All the accommodation (with the exception of the overnight train) was very good, with excellent staff and food.

Most Inspirational Moment

Deir el Medina (the workers' tombs) and Haibu temple. We did these as an alternative to Valley of the Queens because the tomb of Nefertari was closed. Much quieter than the major sites, and still vibrant colours. They are well worth seeing.

Thoughts on Group Leader

As mentioned before, the tour leader always seemed in a hurry to get through the visits. Some of his explanations were rather perfunctory, and I sometimes felt he would rather have been somewhere else. I appreciate that he was fasting for Ramadan and needed breaks for prayers and to eat at sunset, which we were happy to accommodate.

Advice for Potential Travellers

ATMs are readily available, but if you draw a large amount at one time you are likely to get it in 200 pound notes that are quite difficult to get change from - that was certainly my experience with the ATM at the first hotel. You need 10s and 5s for toilet stops. Pack essentials in your day bag for the train journey, as the luggage is stored above the top bunk making it awkward to get at.

Suggestions

Maybe add Deir el Medina and Haibu to the list of optional visits?

Pura Vida: what an amazing trip

We travelled over 1000 miles with the tour taking us on the canals of Tortuguero on the Caribbean side of the country : over the hills into the Cloud Forest of Monteverde and finishing in Camara on the Pacific. On route we saw a vast amount of amazing birds, reptiles, insects and mammals. This adventure trip included many trips in boats, zip wiring, tubing down the river, bathing in hot springs. We walked to waterfalls, volcanoes, and through a Tropical Rain forest.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many on this trip. I loved the sounds especially in the morning of the howler monkeys and the cacophony of bird song. I also loved the zip wiring : flying through and over the tree tops: 14 zip wires in all.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was Adriana Costa and was very organised and had a vast knowledge of the wildlife of Costa Rica. She was a lot of fun. Our driver Randall should also get a mention : his driving was exceptional and bus always immaculate, and always accommodating. They were a great team together.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Our trip was in March… take some sort of waterproof jacket, waterproof walking shoes (boots not needed) A jumper for the Cloud Forest as the temperature drops but otherwise a mixture of shorts: long trousers and tee shirts. A few items to change into for the evening. Plenty of insect repellent (containing 50%deet) didn’t need Colones as everywhere we visited accepted dollars and in most places prices were written in US $. I would recommend taking binoculars for spotting all the amazing wildlife and a torch for the nighttime walk.

Suggestions

If you like a mixture of sightseeing and adventure then this is a holiday for you.

Enjoyable walking off season on beautiful coast

Expert local guide and family run hotel made this a great trip

Slightly Disappointed

Some wonderful sights and experiences but some parts fell short of my expectations . The hotels and boat were excellent but not the felucca .

Most Inspirational Moment

Karnak

Thoughts on Group Leader

Generally alright but always in a rush to shorten trips. In Cairo to return to the hotel by 16:00h so he could go home and the rest of the time to finish early because of Ramadan

Advice for Potential Travellers

Avoid peak times

Suggestions

Disappointed not to see more of old Cairo and Alexandria. Not visiting the battlefield at El Alemain and visiting Edfu at a peak time and then waiting for hours for the boat to negotiate the lock. The overnight sleeper was awful

Discover Chile

Wonderful

Most Inspirational Moment

Atacama Desert

Thoughts on Group Leader

Absolutely Fab!!!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do this trip

Suggestions

Will definitely book with Exodus again.

Worth all those steps for the food and the views

The weather in March was mixed, but we only got wet once or twice. In general the weather was good for walking, and later in the week there was plenty of sun.
Most places looked like they were just getting reason for the season, with much painting and repairs being done. Being this early meant most places were quiet, so no queuing or traffic jams.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking the crater rim of Vesuvius with a local expert was very interesting. Seeing the scale of Pompeii, again with a local expert guide. The Path of the Gods had great views. Eating a gelato in Amalfi in the sunshine mid-week was in marked contrast to after the first walk when the waves were crashing on the beach. Watching the hotel chef making various pizzas, and then eating as much as I could manage.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Severio obviously enjoys his job, and reordered the schedule to make the most of the varying weather. Living locally meant he knew the area very well. I would certainly recommend him as a guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There are indeed a lot of steps (mostly down), although generally in good condition. For someone who lives in a flat part of the UK, the first few days were hard going at times, We were very well fed every evening, and the local house wine was very good value. The boat trip from Amalfi to Capri on the free day was fun, and included a bit of sightseeing of the Capri coastline on arrival. Even in March the buses between Capri and Anacapri were busy, so getting around took a lot of time. The Path of the Gods ends in Positano and we were lucky that the return boat ride had just started. Any earlier and it would have been a return by bus.

Suggestions

As recommended, a walking pole was very useful at times.

Wonderful week of variety in a stunning setting

This was a lovely week of many different activities in beautiful surroundings staying in a comfortable environment.

Most Inspirational Moment

Husky dog sledding

Thoughts on Group Leader

Timo was excellent. He really knew the wilderness environment and was in touch with it. A calm soul who really enhanced the whole experience and was very helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you want an introduction to many winter activities, this is the holiday for you. The fact that all specialist clothing and equipment is provided is a real bonus. Basecamp Oulanka is very comfortable and they feed you extremely well, you certainly won't go hungry.

Suggestions

The sauna and hot tub are a welcome treat at the end of activities. All in all a fabulous week which I wouldn't hesitate in recommending.

A ride through Jordans countryside and history

This trip includes 5 days of moderate cycling, much of it downhill, with a few ups to test the keen cyclists and walking tours of some of Jordans best historic sights.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking through Petra and surrounding hills on a warm spring day, followed by a day of cycling on a very quiet road descending from Petra to Aqaba on the Red Sea coast.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both ourgroup leader and cycle guide who worked very well together, focused on ensuring we had a safe and enjoyable trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the trip notes carefully and make sure you are cycle fit for your trip.

Suggestions

Obviously, just at the moment tourist numbers are way down in Jordan meaning it is very pleasant to visit the uncrowded historic sites. At no point during our tour did we feel unsafe or threatened by events going on in the wider region

Highlights of Morocco

We just returned from a 15 day trip across Morocco.
It was a fabulous trip with a great group of fellow travellers. Our guide Khaled was a fantastic, enthusiastic ambassador for his country.
We quickly became a great group of friends who thoroughly enjoyed all the sights and sounds of Morocco.

Most Inspirational Moment

The camel trek into The Sahara was awe inspiring. We had a sand dune view of the setting sun.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Khaled was our guide. He was friendly and enthusiastic about sharing his country. He kept us informed daily of upcoming meeting points etc. and was highly organized. He listened to our desire for quick lunches and took us to amazing, affordable restaurants for dinner. He was fantastic for showing us the every day men/women of his country. He was also up for a laugh and joking around. He had to deal daily with 2 of our fellow travellers who were ill informed and ill prepared for this trip. He was very patient with their very challenging behavior.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There’s a lot of down time on the bus for long hours of travelling between cities. There’s also a lot of walking on uneven ground. Wear comfortable shoes. The 5 km uphill trek to our hotel in the High Atlas MTS was a surprise. Mules were available for our gear and anyone needing some assistance up the hill. It was quite arduous. We were there in early March and wore our winter coats most of the time. Our hotels were clean and ok. It was cold at night but all the hotels supplied lots of blankets. We all had a hot shower every morning. Other reviews spoke of inadequate hot water but we never experienced that.

Suggestions

Be prepared for a country of vast contrasts. Big bustling urban cities, remote villages, seashores resort area, mountains and the Sahara Desert. I was so impressed by Morocco. It has something for everyone and is very clean and safe to travel within. If you’re considering a vacation here…you’re going to love Morocco.
