Ancient and Modern Japan

Overall positive, a good overview of Japan, covering a lot of ground from Kyoto to Tokyo. The group of 15 bonded well and guide was excellent. Transport on bullet train excellent
Areas for improvement – quality of accommodation fairly basic, around 3*. Strengthen context/tours of big cities to give more of an overview.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visit to Hiroshima, very moving.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Learn a little Japanese before you go, as helps to breakdown barriers.

Suggestions

Improve flight options as the exodus route via Hong Kong not used by group. Review group size - 15 a lot to keep together and for eating purposes.

Wildlife spotting in Costa Rica

Great way to see a lot of Costa Rica with the huge benefit of a private vehicle and guide. All accommodation was a high standard as well as good and ample food in all hotels.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many to choose, but ziplining through the canopy at Monteverde, the river trips, and of course the diversity of wildlife.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jonathan was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about everything to do with Costa Rica, in particular incredible knowledge of the flora and fauna. The timings given for travel, walks and general activities were often underestimated so it would have been better to be very clear about the daily plans and timings, and what we needed to pack for the following day, so there were no surprises.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Although the rating was 3 for Wildlife (Three: Designed for people with a general interest in wildlife, but who also want to experience the other highlights of the destination), we did find it heavily focused on wildlife spotting, which meant that all walks were done at a slow pace in order to maximise spotting. This sometimes meant that there was not always enough time to do some of the optional activities. Most people had good SLRs and some with telephoto lens as sometimes you do need a good zoom for the wildlife. The activity level is rated 1 out of 7, but some days had a couple of walks of 2.5-3 hours in the heat, which some found quite hard. There is also a lot of travel in the bus, so be prepared for that. The temperature ranges from extremely hot & humid in Manuel Antonio and Esquinas, to cooler in Savegre, and of course it can always rain although we were very lucky and hardly had any. Sturdy walking shoes and walking sandals with straps were fine throughout. Esquinas can get muddy but they supply wellies, so bring appropriate socks! We didn’t need walking boots at all. Over half of our group got ill half way through the trip with upset stomachs and cramps. The cause was not identified and could be a usual travel bug, but make sure you bring enough medical supplies just in case. We understand other recent groups on this trip had also been affected.

Suggestions

Although we did see all the wildlife we could wish for, some walks (in particular the cloud forests) seemed very quiet and sometimes meant we didn't see much at all. The river boat trips seemed to provide the most abundant viewings. It was mentioned this could have been because it was so hot, with little recent rain, so that can seem to affect sightings. If you set your expectations accordingly and just go to enjoy walking in the jungle, and if you see wildlife then its a bonus, then you won't be disappointed. Esquinas Lodge was completely in the middle of the jungle with a beautiful pool and very blended with the surroundings. The windows in your room are just mesh so you can hear the sounds of the jungle. Whilst there is a fan it did little to keep you cool, particularly given the high humidity! Tortuguero also only had fans, but wasn't quite as hot. All other hotels had a/c.

Excellent Hiking Experience

This was a great trip, first and formost due to the very professional and experienced support team lead by Kumar.

Most Inspirational Moment

The morning after passing Larke Pass. After a very cold night, we found ourselves surrounded by a beautiful mountain panorama.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Absolutely brilliant ! I can’t praise Kumar high enough. His default reply to pretty much all our needs and questions was positive and he made it happen. Always attentive and during thye whole trip super professional and helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure that you bring a good sleeping bag !

Suggestions

Great support also from Max and from the customer care team leading up to the trip and from the Footloose Team when I needed urgent dental care just before the trip was starting.

Amalfi Coast with Scott Forsyth and Veriano Verde

A week long trip exploring and learning about the Amalfi Coast with the added addition of a RCGS photographer and a leader interested in photography. Our trips were punctuated with interesting pauses to take advantage of the scenery and the light. We learnt about the countryside, farming and food. We gelled as the week went on and shared our experiences.

Most Inspirational Moment

I am not sure that I can answer this question, there were many moments in the week.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic, thoughtful, kind and helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are interested in the coast and a chance to take some images then pick this holiday.

Suggestions

I would have liked the trip notes to state that the plug at the Hotel Due Torri uses the 3 pin plug. I managed to use one of the plugs as a 2 pin and then an adapter to charge all my appliances.

Jordan

We spent a week travel around this beautiful country and learnt an incredible amount.

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day was a highlight but eating in two Jordanian households has to be above everything. We felt hugely privileged to be able to see the lives of local people. The whole country is an inspiration with fabulous historical sites, friendly people, stunning scenery and excellent food.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Muayad Mismar is such an inspiring leader. He has great knowledge, a passion for his country and its people , energy and fabulous interaction with both us and local people. Simply one of the best.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don’t worry about security. Jordan is extremely safe and we never worried for even a second.

I am so glad I went.

Tuscany Walks & Chianti Wines is set in a beautiful rural location.

A very relaxed but full itinerary walking holiday. Challenging walks at times with lots to do but well balanced with down time to enjoy the surroundings and wine.

Most Inspirational Moment

It's hard to pick one moment as the scenery is beautiful. We were inspired by the views every day, the countryside, the villages, Siena and Florence. Not to mention the local wines!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Liz was amazing, it was all about the groups needs and keeping us safe, doing her utmost to ensure we had the best possible experiences. Liz's knowledge of the region was impeccable. Liz was friendly and a great part of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The hotel is quite rural, be prepared for the lack of a convenient shop!

Suggestions

As with previous Exodus holidays, we have met a lovely group of people, group leader and staff.

We had been on an Exodus walking holiday before and Walking in Tuscany was one of the next holidays we wanted to experience. True to form, right from booking, it was second to none and what we had hoped for.

Wonderful scenery, excellent Tuscan rustic accommodation, very friendly staff and an amazing tour guide. The walking caters for all within ‘moderate’ abilities, allowing for challenging yourself if you choose with experienced support.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the limestone plateau of the Monte Sumbra in the Apuane National Park. Although this was not the summit the views were breath taking. To sit and enjoy the peace and tranquility of this space was a privilege!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sara was super human!! Extremely experienced and knowledgeable and an endless abundance of energy. Nothing was too much trouble. Sara catered for everyone's specific needs and ensured the itinerary got the best out of the weather so that the rain did not hinder our experience. Sara went above and beyond with organising taxis, trains, restaurants, individual needs and even laundry!

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are looking for an authentic walking holiday and meeting like minded people I would thoroughly recommend. A relaxed, friendly and welcoming vibe.

An outstanding week

This was my first holiday with Exodus, and what an amazing experience! From the very first moment when we walked around Amman and ate freshly cooked falafel in freshly cooked bread for lunch – our adventure started. The incredible sights, the sounds, the overwhelmingly hospitable people, the fascinating history – every day was different and a new adventure.

Most Inspirational Moment

The best experience was having a home cooked meal in Fatima’s house (upside down meal) in Petra. Such an inspiring lady, beautiful food, with added touches of henna on your hand, and learning to write your name in Arabic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Muayad was a wonderful tour guide. He was authentic and so hospitable. He was a mine of information, passionate about his country and people, he genuinely cared about us a group, and those we encountered in our different experiences along the way. He provided just the best holiday and created memories that I’ll never forget.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just enjoy every day and absorb everything this beautiful country offers you.

Suggestions

Highly recommend Exodus as a tour company - offering holidays that genuinely care for the communities and country that you are visiting. Jordan is an incredible country that needs to be explored and experienced!

Treasures upon treasures

What a wonderful week offering a great overview of Sicily, its culture, history and people, not to mention food and pastries! We packed so much into the week, always something new and unexpected, each day having its particular wow factor.

Most Inspirational Moment

Trekking the Zingaro coastal path. Breathtaking views of the mountains and the deep, deep blue sea. Indescribably beautiful, although the rocky path proved a little challenging for some.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alessio could have been added to the list of the treasures we encountered. Always helpful, always warm and friendly, always professional, humorous and knowledgeable. Couldn't wish for anything more.

Advice for Potential Travellers

April was the perfect time to visit, pleasantly warm, but not too hot although sun protection is needed. Some of the high places (e.g. Etna, Erice) can be chilly and windy, so warm layers, scarves and hats are recommended.

Suggestions

Great memories, great photos, yet another great memorable Exodus adventure!

Ground staff great, UK support poor

We booked 2 trips to run together. Booking them intially was difficult as the agent couldn’t grasp what we were trying to do and kept quoting the wrong direction and got confused over airports. As a result we ended up flying from London as it was easiest for him to understand. Questions were left unanswered and at no time was it acknowldged that we were doing the 2 trips as one. The final hotel of the last trip was supposed to be the same as the first of this but in fact we had to move to a different hotel. Overall an good trip was let down by the UK support team.
