    November whale & leopard spotting

As it says in the title - you see whales and leopards in Sri Lanka! Local arrangements are a bit mixed - the Yala hotel is excellent but the behaviour of the park drivers degrades the experience.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Encountering a school of dolphins as we approached the harbour after watching blue whales.

What did you think of your group leader?

We had both a group leader and a naturalist. The naturalist was excellent at his job and was also very helpful as a leader, organising free time activities for the group. The group leader was probably good at administration but did not interact much with the group.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be prepared for early rises! The boat sails at 0700 and our naturalist was keen to enter Yala at dawn. The comments in other reviews about the Yala drivers are sadly true. A traffic jam of up to 60 jeeps is not a great way to watch leopards. If you suffer from seasickness take pills! You will be going out in to the deep ocean for about an hour simply to reach the whales

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We were a bit unlucky with the weather which reduced the number of sightings. November may be too close to the end of the monsoon for this trip. Despite the wording of the Trip Notes our group of 14 did not have our own boat for whale watching.
