Trip Overview

From mighty Sigiriya to the leopard-ruled plains of Yala, discover the heart and soul of this extraordinary island

Sri Lanka is a wonderland for adventurers: Buddhist temples and colonial architecture; tea plantations and spice gardens; safari parks and palm-fringed beaches. Book this Premium trip to explore it beyond the typical tourist track. We join a family to cook traditional curries (which we share with our hosts and local monks) and explore Gal Oya village with a chief from the forest-dwelling Veddha community. Of course, there are a few highlights we couldn’t miss, including the rock fortress of Sigiriya and safari in Yala National Park, and we’ve scheduled downtime in beachside on the south coast for a chance to kick back and relax.

Is This Trip for You?

This trip is rated Activity Level 1 (Leisurely). For more on our trip gradings, visit our Activity Level Guidelines page.

This is not a demanding trip although there are a few long drives on bumpy, twisty mountain roads. There is a lot to see, but everything is scheduled so it doesn’t feel too rushed.

On Day 8, there is a two to three-hour hike along the Pekoe Trail. Generally, this is a leisurely/moderate hike (activity level 2) with the toughest part a near-165ft (50m) ascent up steps; for the most part, the trail gently undulates through forests, tea plantations and local villages.

The buses we use are comfortable and air conditioned. We use open-back 4x4s for the game drives and tuk-tuks for some activities.

Please note, when visiting Sigiriya Rock Fortress (Lion Rock) the final ascent to the top is on metal open stairs fixed against the side of the rock. There are handrails on either side but those with a strong fear of heights may prefer to stay on the lower level (where the lion “paws” are) and not continue to the rock plateau.

Sinhala and Tamil New Year (April departures)

The new year festival known as Avurudu in Sinhala and Puththandu in Tamil is unique to Sri Lanka and observed by both Sinhala Buddhists and Tamil Hindus across the country. It takes place on 12-13 April 2024 and 13-14 April 2025 (the date varies slightly each year).

If you are travelling in Sri Lanka over these dates, expect to see religious ceremonies, family activities, traditional foods, colourful decorations and a general feeling of goodwill towards neighbours and friends. Parties can run into the night and it can be quite loud during this period. Your leader will be happy to show you some of the activities where your itinerary allows. Please note, during the new year public holiday, most shops, monuments and attractions will be closed; however, your leader will modify the itinerary to ensure minimal disruption

Group

Our Sri Lankan team of leaders has proved very popular with their incredible knowledge, passion and hospitality adding greatly to the experience. There is no better way to experience Sri Lankan culture than letting a local leader show you around their country.

  • Start City: Negombo
  • End City: Colombo

Land Only Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive in Negombo

Upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you are met by our airport representative and guide and transferred (approximately 20 minutes) to the west-coast city of Negombo. We then have the afternoon at leisure, allowing us to enjoy the many facilities at the resort.

We come together as a group for a welcome cocktail before dinner, and the tour leader provides a welcome briefing – a great opportunity to meet and mingle with your travel companions for the next two weeks.

Premium accommodation: Heritance Negombo (or similar)

Day 2
Drive to Habarana via Umandawa Global Buddhist Village and Dambulla

After breakfast, we travel to Habarana (approximately four hours’ drive). En route, we stop at the Umandawa Global Buddhist Village, a ‘walking monastery’ with hamlets, gravel paths, gardens, organic farms, ponds and sculptures. We also have a freshly prepared organic lunch here.

After our food, we visit the Dambulla cave temple complex, which houses intricate murals and 150 Buddha statues across five cave temples, before completing our journey to Habarana.

Premium accommodation: Habarana Village by Cinnamon (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3
Morning village tour; evening visit to the Sigiriya rock fortress

Following breakfast, we take a village tour around Habarana (approximate drive time: 20 minutes). We start with a short ride in a hand-tractor/land-master near the village pond, before boarding a boat to cross the water. After a short walk through paddy fields and vegetable gardens, we reach a family home and have the opportunity to participate in an alms-giving session at a nearby Buddhist temple. We help the family to prepare and cook a traditional meal of vegetarian curries and steamed rice before observing various rituals performed by a local monk for the alms-giving ceremony.  The meal will be shared between us, the monks, and the host family.

Late afternoon, we visit Sigiriya, an icon of Sri Lanka. Built in the fifth century by King Kashyapa, this magnificent rock fortress sits on a flat-topped granite plateau 655ft (200m) above the scrub jungle. We take the 1,500 steps to the top, visiting renowned frescoes, enjoying expansive views from the summit and, with a bit of luck, basking in a beautiful sunset.

Premium accommodation: Habarana Village by Cinnamon (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4
Drive to Kandy via a spice garden

After breakfast, we head to Kandy (approximate drive time: three hours). Along the way, we visit a spice garden for a delightful sensory experience. Our guide takes us on a leisurely walk through the garden, pointing out different plants and explaining their significance. We also have an opportunity to plant a tree with assistance from the staff, helping to regenerate the garden.

We then continue to Kandy (also known as Mahanuwara), the last capital of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka. After checking into our riverside hotel, we have the afternoon at leisure. You may wish to explore the local bazaars, stroll through the royal botanical gardens just outside the city or just relax by the hotel pool.

Premium accommodation: Cinnamon Citadel (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5
Kandy city tour; afternoon transfer to Gal Oya

After breakfast, we visit the Temple of the Tooth. The last king of Kandy, having embraced Buddhism, made the town home to the tooth relic of the Lord Buddha. It was said the protector of the relic would also be the ruler of the land and so it was placed close to the royal palace in what is now the Temple of the Tooth. This temple is one of the holiest places of worship in Sri Lanka and a pilgrimage site for Buddhists around the world. Visitors can take part in Buddhist rituals, or pooja, throughout the day, a spiritual and special experience.

We have lunch at a local restaurant and then proceed to our glamping site near Gal Oya National Park (approximate drive time: 3hr 30min). Our home for the next two nights is an idyllic spot in Rathugala, a village inhabited by the indigenous Veddha community and wrapped by forested mountains. Take the opportunity to unwind by the pool and immerse yourself in nature.

Epic accommodation: Wild glamping, Gal Oya

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6
Morning boat safari on lake Senanayake Samudraya; afternoon walk with a Veddha chief

After breakfast, we have a boat safari on the largest lake in Sri Lanka, Senanayake Samudraya (approximate drive time: 40 minutes). Created in 1951 and surrounded by Gal Oya National Park, the reservoir is a great place to see elephants as they gather to drink; if we’re lucky, we may spot them swimming from island to island. The reservoir is also home to abundant birdlife, crocodiles, deer and more. During the experience, we stop for a snack, tea or coffee with a lovely panorama. Due to the limited availability of boats, the experience may be shared with other guests.

In the afternoon, we explore Gal Oya with a village chief from the indigenous, forest-dwelling Veddha community. He leads us on a walk through the jungle of his ancestors, bringing the forest to life by explaining how his community uses medicinal plants, and identifying ancient hunting grounds and cave dwellings.

Epic accommodation: Wild glamping, Gal Oya

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 7
Early morning walk to Kiri Oruwa Lake; drive to Ella via a tea plantation

For those who wish to explore, there’s an early morning walk to Kiri Oruwa Lake. We are joined by a naturalist guide and take a leisurely stroll through the village of Rathugala to the waters, which are normally full of birdlife and sometimes elephants. We then return to the hotel for breakfast, before driving to Ella (approximate drive time: three hours).

This afternoon, once we’re checked into the hotel we head out to visit a private tea plantation and factory. We start by walking through the plantation observing workers gathering and plucking the young leaves and buds from the tea plant, we’ll then visit the factory to see how fresh leaves are processed from withering and rolled until they are fermented and turned into the familiar black-brown product. The level of fermentation determines the type of tea produced, whether it’s green, black, oolong, or white tea. Finally, you can enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea at the tea factory.

Premium accommodation: EKHO Ella (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8
Trek to the Nine Arches Bridge; lunchtime cooking experience

After breakfast, we stretch our legs with a 5.4mi (8.7km) hike leaving from Ella town. We follow a train track through the Ella Forest Reserve and visit the Nine Arches Bridge, a spectacular Colonial-era construction also known as the Bridge in the Sky.

After completing the (approximately) 2hr 30min walk, we travel by tuk-tuk to a local restaurant where we have an interactive cookery experience where together we will prepare traditional recipes and cook several Sri Lankan dishes for example, coconut roti, garlic curry, eggplant pickle, dhal curry, coconut sambal, papadam and rice. Once the hard work is complete, we will sit together and feast on this authentic lunch.

Afternoon at leisure. Ella town is often characterised by a mix of residential and commercial areas, with architecture which reflects a blend of traditional and modern influences, giving the town a unique and inviting atmosphere. The charming main street lined with quaint shops, cafes and restaurants are great to wander in and out of.

Premium accommodation: EKHO Ella (or similar)

Ascent: 981ft (299m); Activity hours: 3

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 9
Drive to Yala National Park for evening 4x4 safari; visit the Elephant Transit Home

After breakfast, we head to Yala National Park (approximate drive time: two hours). Along the way, we visit the Elephant Transit Home, which rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves until they are ready to be released back into the wild.

It’s then on to Yala National Park, said to be home to the highest concentration of leopards in the world. Here we jump into 4x4s for an evening safari. We keep our eyes peeled for the extraordinary resident wildlife, including elephants, bears, crocodiles and wild boar. The vegetation is primarily grassland and shrub jungle with patches of dense growth, while several salt- and fresh-water lagoons are a haven for a large variety of resident and migratory birds.

Premium accommodation: Chaarya Resort & Spa (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 10
Morning 4x4 safari; drive to Weligama for beach downtime

In the morning, we have our second opportunity to meet the wild and wonderful animals of Yala National Park with a 4×4 safari. You can anticipate encountering a diverse range of fascinating animals, immersing yourself in the beauty of nature, and creating lasting memories on this safari adventure.

Then, after breakfast, we leave for the south-coast town of Weligama, popular for its sandy beach, swimming, snorkelling and surfing (approximate drive time: two hours). From November to April, Weligama is also a top spot for whale watching, when the waters welcome whales (including blue, sperm and bryde) and dolphins.

Day 11
Day at leisure in Weligama; optional whale-watching boat trip (November to April)

Today is yours to spend relaxing on the beach or wandering around the local shops and people watching from a beach bar.

Premium accommodation: Weligama Bay Marriott Resort & Spa (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 12
Visit Galle

After breakfast, we transfer (approximately one-hour) to Galle, said to be the ancient seaport of Tarshish where King Solomon obtained gems and spices. This Unesco World Heritage site is where the Portuguese first landed in Sri Lanka in 1505. It was then captured and fortified by the Dutch who ruled maritime Sri Lanka in the 17th and 18th centuries. Within the 17th-century fort and ramparts are old Dutch churches and monuments, an imposing crested and monogrammed gateway, many well-preserved old Dutch houses and narrow alleys still bearing Dutch names.

Premium accommodation: Jetwing Lighthouse (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 13
Drive to Colombo; boat safari in Madu Ganga river

Atter breakfast, we take a boat safari on the Madu Ganga. As we cruise along the calm river waters, enjoy the tranquil surroundings and lush greenery of the mangrove forests. The knowledgeable boat guides provide us with information about the various local plants and animals, making the experience both educational and enjoyable. We stop at Cinnamon Island to learn about the traditional cinnamon industry and visit Kothduwa Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple on an isolated island.

We arrive in Colombo in the afternoon, the commerce capital of Sri Lanka. The Arabs, Portuguese, Dutch and British left their mark here, in churches and monuments, names and religions, costumes and food, and smatterings of their languages. Modern Colombo is a fascinating city – a blend of east and west, past and present. The main seaport in Sri Lanka is here and adjoining it is Pettah, a local bazaar and trading area. Other places of interest are the beautiful Buddhist and Hindu temples, mosques, the historic Wolvendaal Church, and residential areas comprising the stately homes of the affluent.

This evening, after a brief city tour, our leader takes us out for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

Single supplement from £ 745

Food & Drink

All breakfasts, five lunches and six dinners are included.

We suggest allowing about 4,000-6,000 rupees (US$13-US$20) per lunch or dinner when not included in the itinerary. You can eat out very cheaply in Sri Lanka, but if you mainly eat at the more expensive restaurants, you will spend more than the suggested amount. Your leader will provide recommendations for where to eat locally; however, some locations may have limited local restaurant options, in which case meals will be at the hotel.

Sri Lankan cuisine is a fascinating reflection of the island’s heritage; there is a unique fusion of fresh local produce with spices brought here by Malays, Arabs, Indians, as well as the Dutch, Portuguese and English. Despite (or perhaps because of) these influences, Sri Lankan cuisine is often referred to as simply rice and curry. This is the staple dish in most restaurants and is usually a serving of rice accompanied by assorted meat and vegetable curries as well as various pickles, sambols (condiments), and a handful of tiny poppadum – all using the contrasting flavours of coconut, chilli, curry leaves, cinnamon and garlic.

Vegetarians are well catered for but please inform us before departure of any special dietary requests. Please note, the availability of certain products is minimal or non-existent in Sri Lanka. For example, wheat- or dairy-free options outside of hotels are limited. Please be prepared for this – you may need to bring these from home. Spicier food can be avoided easily and lots of the hotels will serve Western options alongside traditional food.

Mineral water is provided by our local operator in large containers throughout the trip so please bring a bottle with you to refill. Please note, restaurant service can be quite slow.

Transport

We use an air-conditioned minibus or coach depending on the size of the group; however, vehicles in Sri Lanka tend to have limited legroom so we stop for regular comfort breaks as needed on the longer journeys.

We use 4x4s in Yala National Park provided and maintained by the local national park authorities. Although we always request vehicles with seatbelts, they are not always fitted in every vehicle.

Weather & Seasonality

Generally, expect rain at some time but with plenty of sunshine. On the plains, temperatures are warm to hot with Colombo having an average daytime temperature of 30C (86F). The temperatures drop as we go higher into the hills and especially at Ella where the temperature typically varies from 15C (59F) in December-January to 28C (82F) in May-August and is rarely below 12C (54F) or above 31C (88F).

What To Take

Essential Equipment

  • Comfortable trainers (sneakers)/walking shoes (with good grip for the Ella walk)
  • Sandals/flip-flops
  • Light casual clothing
  • Warm sweater/fleece (when travelling December to February)
  • Sunhat
  • Sunscreen
  • Torch (flashlight)
  • Backpack to carry camera, water bottle etc
  • Anti-bacterial hand gel
  • Small personal first-aid kit
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Swimwear and towel
  • Water bottle
  • Dark/neutral clothing (for the game drives in Yala)
  • A pair of socks for visiting temples is useful, as the ground can get very hot

Clothing should cover shoulders and be on or below the knee, especially when visiting temples. Women especially should always dress conservatively to avoid unwanted attention and not cause offence. Vests, tight-fitting trousers, short skirts and shorts are not recommended.

It doesn’t matter what type of bag or case you use on this trip although it is preferable to use a soft holdall (with wheels if necessary) or rucksack/travel sack as they tend to be easier to manage. You should also bring a small backpack for your valuable items.

Practical Information

Visa

Sri Lanka

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally need a visa to enter Sri Lanka. Visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Transition from ETA to eVisa: Sri Lanka has recently moved from the ETA system to a new eVisa scheme. If you currently hold a valid ETA for an upcoming trip to Sri Lanka, your ETA is still valid for use. However, all future visits will require an eVisa, which costs US$40 for a 30-day tourist visa, plus a service fee of US$10 or US$18.50.

Find the eVisa application and more information here: www.srilankaevisa.lk. Further information can be found on the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and Emigration website.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

You should also be aware of local laws and customs in Sri Lanka (see: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/sri-lanka/local-laws-and-customs). The mistreatment of Buddhist images and artefacts is an offence; please note, people have been refused entry to Sri Lanka because of visible tattoos of Buddha.

Vaccinations and Health

Sri Lanka

There are no required vaccinations. However, recommended vaccinations include tetanus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, tuberculosis and typhoid. You will also need a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you’re arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission or transiting for more than 12 hours through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Please confirm with your doctor or travel clinic.

The risk of malaria is slight but you may wish to consult your doctor or travel clinic for further advice. Additionally, dengue fever, a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, is a known risk in places visited. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available; the best form of prevention is to take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Local Time

Sri Lanka's time zone: Asia/Colombo (UTC +05:30)

Electricity

Sri Lanka's electricity: Plug types D (three round pins) and G (three rectangular pins) – 230V, 50Hz. The electricity supply is not 100 percent reliable but is usually only off for short periods.

Sri Lanka: Wonders & Wildlife – Premium Adventure

Money

Sri Lanka's currency: All foreign passport holders can make payments for purchases in the local currency, Sri Lankan rupees (LKR). This is applicable to hotels, restaurants, shops and for any other services. Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard and American Express) are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and most established shops. If you wish to exchange any cash upon arrival into Sri Lankan rupees, it is advisable to exchange British pounds, euros or US dollars upon arrival at Colombo Airport where authorised bank money exchanges are open 24-hours a day. Hotels can change money as well, but the rates will probably not be favourable. Your Tour Leader will be happy to direct you to the appropriate exchange services if you wish to change money during the trip. You are no longer required to produce your receipt of foreign exchange when making payments in Sri Lankan rupees, as was previously the case. However, we suggest you retain receipts of foreign exchange which will help should you wish to change back any unused rupees at the time of departure.

ATM Availability

There are ATMs in many of the main towns in Sri Lanka with Visa, Mastercard and American Express widely accepted. There is often a 3%-4% fee on top of your withdrawals. It’s worth informing your bank before departure that you are travelling to Sri Lanka and carry the relevant telephone number with you in case they put a block on your card.

Extra Expenses & Spending Money

For small purchases, particularly at local shops and markets, cash is generally preferred and easier for transactions than credit cards.

It is recommended you allow at least 2,200 Sri Lankan rupees (US$6) for personal expenditures such as stamps, postcards and soft drinks. Some sites may charge a small fee for camera use. Shopping opportunities in Sri Lanka are endless and we suggest you take money for souvenirs, even if you are generally not a keen shopper, we have found most people succumb to the wide variety of handicrafts on offer.

All entrance fees and activities described in the itinerary are included with an exception for the optional activities available on some days.

Optional excursions

  • Surfing, Mirissa: From 6,000 rupees (US$20) per person. A private one-hour lesson with an instructor and surfboard rental.
  • Snorkelling, Mirissa: 7,500 rupees (US$25) per person. Two-hour session

Whale watching (November to April)

  • One to six passengers: Private boat approximate cost is 120,000 rupees (US$400) per boat plus an additional 6,000 rupees (US$20) per person. For example with six passengers the cost would be approximately US$ 87  per person.
  • Seven to 20 passengers: Private boat approximate cost is 156,000 rupees (US$520) per boat plus an additional 6,000 rupees (US$20) per person. For example with 12 passengers the cost would be approximately US$ 63  per person.

Please note, if you choose to enjoy this excursion on your free day in Mirissa, we strongly advise booking a private charter boat through your leader in advance as the boats are always subject to availability. The more members of the group who wish to join the charter the more cost-effective it will be. We do not recommend larger, commercial boats; they may be cheaper, but they do not always respect the welfare of the animals or operate in an environmentally responsible way. We have also had reports of overcrowding on the boats. Please ask your leader for further details on how to book a private charter.

Tipping

On this Premium Adventure, tipping for any local support staff is included, and will normally be taken care of by your tour Leader (or in some cases through our local agent).

Our ‘included tips’ will normally cover drivers, local specialist guides, certain hotel staff, and serving staff for included meals. Amounts will be in line with the local standard. Of course, if you wish to make a further tip for some extra special service you may do so.

Tips for the tour leader are not included. Whether to tip at all and the amount is entirely at your own discretion, but if you wish to show your appreciation, we suggest around 1,200-1,600 rupees (US$4-US$5) per person per day.

Where possible, please try to tip your leader in the local currency.

  • The use of a local guide means our customers will be well informed about local traditions, and cultural-social sensitivities.
  • This trip brings income and opportunity to the destination community through the inclusion of locally owned hotels and restaurants, the emphasis on eating locally produced food, and by supporting other local enterprises.
  • All of the hotels we stay in are dedicated to hiring local staff, providing employment opportunities and income alternatives where they may be otherwise hard to come by.
  • This tour actively encourages guests to talk to local people, visit local cafes and restaurants and use markets to purchase traditional crafts.

Places

How this trip helps protect and conserve local landscapes and nature.

  • Read about our commitment to nature protection and restoration here, including our rewilding commitment for every customer who travels.
  • By travelling in a small group, led by a local guide, we ‘tread lightly’ to minimise our impact on local resources and the environment.
  • Our trips adhere to ABTA’s industry-leading animal welfare guidelines to ensure the best possible practices with regard to working animals and wildlife viewing. Our animal welfare policy can be found here.
  • We support the responsible rehabilitation of elephants at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home when visiting with groups. Our local operator fosters a baby elephant at the Elephant Transit Home, currently supporting their second foster elephant since 2018. The first elephant calf was released to the wild after five years of foster parenting.
  • By visiting national parks, ruins and museums, our entrance fees contribute to their upkeep. For example, our game drives in Yala National Park promotes animal welfare and financially contributes to conservation projects in the area.
  • We work with our partners on the ground to proactively eliminate or reduce waste, for example eliminating all single-use plastic water bottles and instead providing refills for reusable bottles.
  • The Exodus Travels Foundation has launched the Community Kickstart Project to help our destination communities recover and rebuild following the impact of COVID-19. In Sri Lanka, we’ve contributed to the Yala Park Driver Support initiative, more details can be found here

  • Vegetarian and vegan options are available at majority of accommodation and restaurants.
  • This trip favours Sri Lankan-owned and run accommodation wherever possible.

Tips for sustainable travel on this trip

  • Leave no trace: We do all we can to ensure we leave no rubbish behind in the wild and beautiful places we visit; we ask that you do the same. If there are no recycling facilities in-country, we’d ask you to consider bringing recyclable materials home with you.
  • Plastic waste reduction: Please bring your own reusable water bottle on this trip; filtered water will be provided where tap water is not drinkable.
  • Please be aware there are a large number of stray dogs in Sri Lanka, and you may encounter some during your trip. Our local operators are aware of this and we are monitoring any animal welfare concerns.

Cultural respect:

  • One should not touch someone’s head as this is considered disrespectful.
  • It’s polite to use your right hand when shaking hands or handing money and small objects to someone else.
  • It is common practice to remove one’s shoes before entering someone’s home.
  • Especially when visiting temples, clothing should cover shoulders and be on or below the knee.
