More than one activity or ski level available.

On many of our trekking trips we offer weeks at different activity levels.. There are also trips on which two separate levels are available per week. In these cases, there will be a leader with each level.

The same applies to our multi grade cross country skiing trips. The skiing grade can differ per week, and on some trips two ski grades are available on any given week.

In all cases please check the 'Is this trip for you' section for more details, and the dates and prices page to see which weeks are at which level or ski grade.

Trip Overview

Cross-country skiing is a fantastic way to enjoy some of the best winter scenery on offer. With pre-cut tracks or ‘loipe’ offering a network of routes on varying terrain, there is something for everyone. Unlike downhills skiing, this is more of an aerobic workout and not all about speed. Crucially, cross-country skis can be used on the flat, on descent and even on an ascent, with the right technique. The Dolomites have been welcoming visitors for many years, keen to enjoy the characteristic jagged limestone peaks.

Dobbiaco, set at 1200m in altitude in the heart of the region, is one of our most popular centres, offering weeks at beginner to advanced level. Our base for the week is the welcoming hotel run by the Tschurtschenthaler family, where warm hospitality and comfortable surroundings provide the perfect balance to an active itinerary.

At a Glance

  • 5 days guided cross-country skiing, classic technique
  • 7 nights at the 3-star Hotel Tschurtschenthaler
  • Mix of flat and easy routes to challenging ascents/descents
  • Cross-country skiing grades 1-4, Beginners to Advanced
  • Multi-grade skiing available on certain dates

Trip Highlights

  • Find the right level on multigrade weeks
  • Explore an extensive network of routes
  • Relax in a comfortable family-run hotel in picturesque Dobbiaco

Is This Trip for You?

Compared to those used for downhill, cross-country skis are longer, thinner and lighter with bindings that allow you to lift up your heel. Most cross-country skiing is undertaken on prepared tracks (loipe) covering flat and hillier terrain enabling you to explore the winter landscapes away from the confines of the alpine pistes.

It is a great aerobic workout and something that can be easily adapted to your skill and fitness level.

Exodus offers cross-country skiing holidays to suit a wide range of technical and physical levels. Our cross-country skiing grades reflect both the level of physical fitness required and the level of skiing experience required. They are comparable to the activity levels we use on our snowshoeing, cycling, activity and trekking holidays. We believe a slightly different system is required, due to the tuition we provide on our holidays. This sets our cross-country skiing holidays apart, as we tend not to need to teach people how to ride a bike or walk. The aim remains to create groups of similar ability and fitness. Our descriptions are below, however, feel free to call and speak to an expert if you are unsure which grade or type of holiday will suit you best.

At Dobbiaco, there are three grades of skiing offered, ranging from beginner to intermediate. Availability varies and depending on the dates there may be two leaders offering two different grades or one leader offering a single cross-country skiing grade. Please check the grade of skiing that applies to your selected week via our website.

Grade 1 - Beginners

A week for complete beginners. Inevitably we start with the basics, including how to stop using the snowplough technique and how to turn. You will be on skis for at least 5-6 hours a day with a focus on tuition, getting comfortable on skis and building towards longer tours through the winter landscape. In some centres there may also be some easy off-track skiing. This involves heading off the pre-cut tracks, typically across frozen lakes or snow-covered pastures.

Grade 2 - Improvers

These weeks are ideal for those who have enjoyed at least one grade 1 holiday and grasped the basics. They offer tuition to refresh and improve technique and typically will ski a little further than Grade 1 weeks, and over more varied terrain, i.e more ups and downs and therefore requiring a slightly higher level of fitness. In some cases these weeks are acceptable for newcomers to cross-country skiing. Beginners on these weeks should be very fit and proficient in sports that develop balance - ice-skating, roller-skating or roller skiing and will need to pick up the basic technique quickly. Please contact us if you wish to book a Grade 2 holiday but have not skied before.

Grade 3 - Intermediates

A grade 3 week is ideal for those looking to push on, tackle some slightly steeper terrain and cover more ground each day. Typical groups will have a few weeks skiing behind them, be very comfortable with the basics and happy on longer day tours. There will still be tuition on these weeks, at the required level.

Grade 4 - Advanced

Choose this level if you can tackle ‘ups and downs’ competently, manage a controlled snowplough descent, and if you want to ski
at a lively pace. You should also be able to get up swiftly and easily by yourself after a fall. The mix of track and off-track skiing

Following a review of all our trips we have categorised this trip as generally not suitable for persons of reduced mobility. However if you are a regular traveller on such trips, please contact customer services to discuss the trip and your personal condition.

The group will generally be between 6 and 20 people. There will be a UK leader and drivers and local guides where needed.

There will normally be 1 leader per 10 persons.

Our leaders are experienced ski enthusiasts, keen to impart their knowledge and skills. Instruction is included at all levels ‐ naturally beginners weeks feature a large element of instruction to get you started. Those who ski at an advanced grade will enjoy the combination of longer tours with some on‐the‐ground tuition as and when required.

The minimum age of clients on this trip is 14 years. Please note that anyone aged under 18 must be accompanied by (and share accommodation with) a parent or legal guardian.

Land Only Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Start Dobbiaco.

Our trip starts in the lovely village of Dobbiaco, in South Tyrol, just over the border from Austria.

    Meals included:
  • Days 2-4

    3 days cross-country skiing.

Each day our leader chooses routes according to the grade and snow conditions. Many kilometres of easy track along the valleys offer wonderful options for beginners and improvers. Some begin from Dobbiaco itself, for others, we make use of the local transport network. For the more advanced skiers, there are more challenging routes, such as the track that leads south to Cortina d'Ampezzo, a memorable route among spectacular mountains, passing under the triple rock buttresses of the imposing Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

In a typical week, the group will cover more and more ground, taking in all that this beautiful region has to offer. There are opportunities for coffee stops and of course, photo stops as we spend our week framed by the towering limestone peaks synonymous with the region.

    Meals included:
  • Day 5

    Free Day

Today is usually the free day to relax at the hotel, stroll around town and enjoy a coffee or choose an optional activity such as self-guided snowshoeing or perhaps a visit to one of the local museums.

    Meals included:
  • Days 6-7

We continue our explorations on skis.

The Sexten and Prags valleys offer a choice of undulating routes in typical Dolomites scenery and the high Plaetzwiese Plateau also offers superb routes at about 2000m.

By this stage of the week, even beginner groups will have mastered the basics such as how to turn and stop, ascend and descend safely. More advanced groups will have already covered some of the fantastic secluded routes and the leaders will ensure the final few days are used to make the most of the simple pleasure of gliding through such a beautiful natural environment.

    Meals included:
  • Day 8

    End Dobbiaco.

    Our trip ends in Dobbiaco.

    Meals included:

Tschurtschenthaler Hotel - 3 Star

This fine hotel has been welcoming our groups for many years. The attractive building is traditionally styled, but with the advantages of a small swimming pool, sauna and beauty treatment room (treatments not included). An ample buffet breakfast prepares us for the exertions of the day ahead and evening meals draw equally on Italian and Austrian traditions. After dinner you can relax in the lounge or go through to the bar for a drink with the locals. All rooms have en suite facilities and are comfortably furnished.

Superior rooms offer more spacious accommodation and are available for a supplement, depending on departure. In order to guarantee availability, please inform Exodus when booking and note this is payable before departure.

Single Accommodation

Single accommodation available on request for a supplement.

Where a single supplement is available, paying for a single will only guarantee a room for single use. It does not necessarily mean a twin or double room will be provided for sole occupancy.

Please note that a member of the group may be allocated a single room by default if the make-up of the group means there isn’t anyone for them to share with. Paying the supplement in advance is the only way to guarantee a single room.

Single supplements cannot be refunded retrospectively.

Food & Transport

Eating & Drinking

All breakfast and 6 dinners are included.

An ample buffet breakfast prepares us for the exertions of the day ahead. The excellent evening meals draw equally on Italian and Austrian traditions. They are usually made up of 4-courses, but it is always possible to skip one if you want a lighter dinner. For lunch our leaders will take us to a variety of cafes or huts where we can enjoy some traditional Tyrolean dishes as well as some international classics.

Airport transfers are carried out by private bus and may be shared with other tours in the area. As part of the skiing itinerary, we use the extensive network of public buses available in the area, which enables us to explore different tracks and find the best snow.

Weather & Seasonality

When to go

Dobbiaco is situated at 1200m and at this height snow can lie from December to mid-March, with fresh snowfalls at any time. Average daytime temperatures in winter are around -5degC, though they can fall as low as -15degC, with approx. 8 to 10 hours of daylight. At all times of the winter you can hope for periods of clear bright weather and in February and March it can become surprisingly warm in the sun. Equally, at all times you need to be ready for the occasional stormy day.

What to Take

Essential Equipment

Large bum-bag and / or small rucksack to carry the items you will need during the day. It is more comfortable to ski without a backpack, but we suggest you take both to give you the option to choose on a daily basis. This would need to fit a large capacity water bottle and/or thermos flask.

Outdoor/winter clothing:

Waterproof jacket

Waterproof trousers (ideally a breathable fabric)

Warm fleece (2 thin fleeces are better than one thick one)

Warm hat (which covers the ears) and gloves (ideally a thin pair and a thick pair)

A good quality base layer is essential.

Sturdy waterproof walking boots (if you want to try snowshoeing or similar).

In the Alps and Dolomites occasionally we experience unseasonably warm days, where T-shirts, lightweight trousers and light fleeces are all that's required.

Optional Equipment

Sunglasses and high factor sun cream

trainers/comfortable shoes for the evenings

swimsuit (for swimming pool).

Equipment Hire

Equipment: Cross-country skis, boots and poles are included and reserved with our local supplier. Please advise your height, weight and shoe size when booking, so we can have the right skis and boots available for you. If you wish to bring your own skis, please advise one of our sales consultants upon booking. This information must be added to your reservation otherwise the airline may charge you on check-in for the extra luggage.

Practical Information

All nationalities require a full passport that must be valid beyond the intended length of stay. It is your responsibility to have the correct personal documents and to obtain your own visa, if one is necessary, in accordance with the regulations of the country you are to visit. The information offered below is to help you with that process. We are not responsible for the actions of local immigration and customs officials, whether at points of entry or otherwise, and any subsequent effects.

Passports: check if you need to renew

You may need to renew your British passport earlier if you’re travelling from 1 January 2021.

On the day you travel, you’ll need your passport to both:

  • have at least 3 months left after the day you plan to leave the country (check the 'expiry date')
  • be less than 10 years old (even if it has 6 months or more left - check the 'date of issue')

Certain European nationalities may be able to travel within Europe on their national identity card. Check carefully with the relevant authorities if you intend to do this.

Visa regulations can change without notice: please check the current regulations in good time to obtain a visa if one is required.

Ticks are known to be present in this region and can carry Lyme disease, Tick-Borne Encephalitis and other diseases. Please take care to protect yourself. You can read more about ticks here.

There are no specific health risks on this trip.

There are no specific health risks.

Travel health can often be something people forget about before going away, but a little preparation and knowledge can go a long way to help you stay fit and healthy while abroad.

As we are not qualified to answer all your questions about travel health we strongly recommend you contact your Medical Professional or a Travel Health Clinic at least 8 weeks prior to departure for up-to-date information. Please note: vaccinations that are routinely recommended to residents of the UK, North America or Australasia are not considered to form part of the travel health advice, and you should ensure these are kept up to date where necessary.

For additional information please visit:

Insurance - are you adequately covered?

It is a condition of joining any of our holidays that you must be fully insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs and air ambulance or helicopter rescue services where appropriate). On arrival in destination for your trip, you will be asked to present details to your leader or local representative of your policy.

If you are resident in the UK we strongly recommend the Exodus travel insurance policy, this is specifically designed to cover all activities on your trip. If arranging your own policy please ensure that you are covered for all activities that are part of the trip, optional activities that you intend to take part in and/or on high altitude itineraries, that you are covered up to the maximum altitude of the trip.

UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU. This gives you medical care at a reduced cost, and in some cases for free, in many European countries, but should not be considered a substitute for adequate insurance. Once your EHIC has expired, you’ll be able to replace it with a GHIC.

Important Information

On all guided trips

Although our leaders are well trained to deal with different capabilities, if they have any concerns about someone’s ability to safely partake in an activity, or their impact on other people’s enjoyment, we authorise them to take necessary action which, in some circumstances, may involve asking someone to miss that activity.

Although rarely enforced, by booking this trip you agree to section 14 of our Booking Conditions which clearly states that our leaders have the authority to do this. In these circumstances we will ensure anyone sitting out is safely provided for and offered alternative options where possible. Refunds will not be provided for activities missed and customers may be liable for additional costs incurred.

On all trips

In booking this trip you should be confident in your ability to participate in all activities described in these Trip Notes. If you have any doubt about your suitability you should call the Exodus office and ask to speak to one of the experts on this itinerary.

Every time that you travel abroad you should take the time to read the warnings in the essential information in the brochure.

Full joining instructions including local emergency numbers, and details of how to reach the start point, will be sent to you approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to departure. If you do not receive these at least a week before departure, or require them earlier please contact our office or your travel agent.

The information in these Trip Notes is given in good faith. Where differences exist between the Trip Notes and our current brochure or website, the Trip Notes supersede the brochure and website. All holidays can be subject to unexpected changes; in order to enjoy them you should be prepared to be flexible where necessary. Occasionally, as stated in our brochure, it may not be possible to follow the itinerary as planned. This may be for a variety of reasons - climatic, political, physical or other. In these circumstances we will make the best possible alternative arrangements that maintain the integrity of the original itinerary.

As fuel prices, airport taxes and exchange rates fluctuate, and airlines manage their rates to match demand, it is proving harder than ever to guarantee our Flight Inclusive prices. Although we endeavour to keep our website as accurate as possible, daily fluctuations mean that our Flight Inclusive price may be out of date. For accurate prices we recommend that you contact one of our Travel Experts, or your Travel Agent.
