Trip Overview

Known for beautiful beaches, heather-clad moors, and rugged southwest coastline, wander through the Whiteford Burrows Nature Reserve and the Llanrhidian Marsh SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), where Oystercatchers and Turnstones nestle in rare flora of early marsh orchid and dune gentian. Continuing to Rhossili village, our route takes in the famous “Worm’s Head”, the most westerly point on the Gower Peninsula and the fascinating ruins of the Salt House. We explore the Oxwich Burrows National Nature Reserve on or way to the spectacular Three Cliffs Bay, where lizards come to sun themselves on warm days. The Mumbles lighthouse marks the end of our Welsh odyssey, an enduring symbol of this beautiful coastal landscape.

Land Only Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Arrive Bishopston

Our start point is a lovely boutique hotel in the heart of the Bishopston Valley just a short distance from The Mumbles.

In the evening our guide will hold a welcome meeting to discuss the week ahead, give advice and answer any questions.

We'll then have our first meal together.

    Meals included:
    Dinner
  • Day 2

    Gower Coastal Path

We begin with a transfer to Llanrhidian Salt Marsh, an area designated an Area of Special Scientific Interest. It is also covered by the sea at high tide so we'll start at a brisk pace! We also enjoy the Whiteford Burrows Nature Reserve, a protected area full of rare flora and numerous species of bird including wildfowl and waders. Our day continues with a traverse of the dunes of Rhossili Bay to see one of the UK's most beautiful beaches where we end our first day's walk.

    Meals included:
    Breakfast
    Distance covered: 19 km / 11 miles
    Total ascent (m):
    225
    Activity (hours):
    4-5
  • Day 3

    Rhossili Bay to Port Eynon

From Rhossili Bay, we set out for Worm's Head. This rocky promontory offers sweeping views of Rhossili Bay. If tides allow we'll explore the promontory itself. Looking back on the 5km stretch of Rhossili Bay's sands, few would argue it's not worth the detour. Back on the mainland, we enjoy a clifftop walk to Port Eynon. Again tide permitting, we may explore the ruins of the Salt House. We then transfer back to our base.

    Meals included:
    Breakfast
    Distance covered: 18 km / 10 miles
    Total ascent (m):
    445
    Activity (hours):
    5-6
  • Day 4

Follow the coastal path through Oxwich Burrows to Three Cliffs Bay

Leaving behind sandy beaches as we head to the limestone cliffs, we walk through Oxwich Burrows National Nature Reserve. Here there is a rare mix of fresh and salt marshes, cliffs and woodland and another of the Welsh coast's beautiful beaches. We then come to Three Cliffs Bay where in summer lizards can be seen basking in the sun. There should also be visibility to Pennard Castle, originally built in the 12th century, though the stone ruins on show today are from a rebuild in the 13th and 14th centuries.

    Meals included:
    Breakfast
    Distance covered: 15 km / 10 miles
    Total ascent (m):
    400
    Activity (hours):
    4-5
  • Day 5

    Southgate, Pwlldu Head, Mumbles Lighthouse

The final section of the path leads from Southgate along high cliffs to Pwlldu Head. The bays and coves along the way are gloriously untouched and as we reach the end of the headland the Mumbles Lighthouse appears in the distance, standing proudly for over 200 years just off the coast on a small island. The seaside town of Mumbles itself lies just a little further on, marking the end of the Gower Coastal Path and a fitting way to end our journey.

    Meals included:
    Breakfast
    Distance covered: 12 km / 7 miles
    Total ascent (m):
    260
    Activity (hours):
    3-4
  • Day 6

    End Bishopston

Time to say goodbye to this beautiful corner of Wales.

    Meals included:
    Breakfast

All ascents, descents and distances listed above have been measured by our local partners or tour leaders. Important Information

On all guided trips

Although our leaders are well trained to deal with different capabilities, if they have any concerns about someone’s ability to safely partake in an activity, or their impact on other people’s enjoyment, we authorise them to take necessary action which, in some circumstances, may involve asking someone to miss that activity.

Although rarely enforced, by booking this trip you agree to section 14 of our Booking Conditions which clearly states that our leaders have the authority to do this. In these circumstances we will ensure anyone sitting out is safely provided for and offered alternative options where possible. Refunds will not be provided for activities missed and customers may be liable for additional costs incurred.

On all trips

In booking this trip you should be confident in your ability to participate in all activities described in these Trip Notes. If you have any doubt about your suitability you should call the Exodus office and ask to speak to one of the experts on this itinerary.

Every time that you travel abroad you should take the time to read the warnings in the essential information in the brochure.

Full joining instructions including local emergency numbers, and details of how to reach the start point, will be sent to you approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to departure. If you do not receive these at least a week before departure, or require them earlier please contact our office or your travel agent.

The information in these Trip Notes is given in good faith. Where differences exist between the Trip Notes and our current brochure or website, the Trip Notes supersede the brochure and website. All holidays can be subject to unexpected changes; in order to enjoy them you should be prepared to be flexible where necessary. Occasionally, as stated in our brochure, it may not be possible to follow the itinerary as planned. This may be for a variety of reasons - climatic, political, physical or other. In these circumstances we will make the best possible alternative arrangements that maintain the integrity of the original itinerary.

As fuel prices, airport taxes and exchange rates fluctuate, and airlines manage their rates to match demand, it is proving harder than ever to guarantee our Flight Inclusive prices. Although we endeavour to keep our website as accurate as possible, daily fluctuations mean that our Flight Inclusive price may be out of date. For accurate prices we recommend that you contact one of our Travel Experts, or your Travel Agent.
