This unique landscape was formed by the eruptions of three volcanoes, Mount Erciyes, Mount Hasan and Mount Melendiz, which have created one of the most distinctive landscapes in the world. The great walking and staggering scenery of this region make for a highly memorable trip.

Is This Trip for You?

Activity Level 3: Moderate

On this trip we have 6 days centre based walking with vehicle support taking us to and from each walk. All the walking is on undulating trails at low altitude. The terrain will include footpaths and mountain terrain, which can be rocky and loose in places with sloped ascents and descents. A good level of fitness is required. Previous trekking experience is desirable but not vital as long as you are confident of your physical condition. The walks take about 5 5hours and require a moderate level of fitness.

You may find our Fitness Training Guide a useful reference: http://www.exodus.co.uk/assets/pdf/Exodus_WT_Fitness_Training_Guide.pdf

Following a review of all our trips we have categorised this trip as generally not suitable for persons of reduced mobility. However if you are a regular traveller on such trips, please contact customer services to discuss the trip and your personal condition.

Itinerary

Land Only Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Start Goreme

There are no activities planned today so you are free to arrive in Goreme at any time. In the evening our guide will hold a welcome meeting to discuss the week ahead, give advice on the local area and answer any questions.

    Sobek Stone House or similar

  • Day 2

Trek through Akvadi (White Valley), visit Uchisar Citadel, highest point in Cappadocia

Today's trek takes us through the Akvadi Valley. Perfectly eroded over time this fascinating landscape presents curious rock formations and fairytale chimneys that wouldn't look out of place in a Dali painting. If we are lucky we may spot wildlife such as the beautiful hoopoe (with its distinctive call) or an Eurasian fox along the way. After approximately 3 hours of walking we arrive at Uchisar village where we will take lunch in a local restaurant before climbing the citidal embedded into the rock above. From here we will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the surrounding surreal landscape. In the afternoon we follow a path that leeds us to the Guvercinlik (or Pigeon Valley) where pigeons are encouraged to roost so the local people from the region can collect their droppings to use as fertiliser. We will then continue to the town of Goreme.

Walk to Zemi valley and through Gomede Valley; afternoon explore Mustafpasa

Today we have a short transfer before we start our trek in Zemi valley. The path leads us through orchards and mesmerizing tunnels to a  Panoramic view point, where we meet our bus and drive to Ayvalı.  İn the afternoon we have a short walk through the Gomede Valley from Ayvalı to Mustafapaşa village where we stop for tea break in a local cafe.  Mustafapasa used to be one of the richest towns in Anatolia until the 1924 population exchange, which forced the Greeks living in Turkey to move to Greece and vice versa. You will be able to spot the Greek influence on the architecture on some of these buildings. In the afternoon there is time to explore this village before returning to our hotel.

Explore the beautiful rock formations of the Pancarlik and Kizilcukur (Red) Valley

After breakfast we transfer to the beautiful Pancarlik Valley. Smooth surfaces on the rock face undulate like waves, whilst the pastel colours intertwined with vineyards and cultivated gardens add colour to this extraordinary landscape. It is also possible spot Sarica and Kepez churches ingrained into the rock chimneys that rise forcefully from the ground. After lunch we head through the Kizilcukur Valley, also known as the Red Valley, for the dramatic sunset colours. Amongst the network of paths that connect the small villages of this valley we visit some of the churches that pepper the area, ending our day's walk in the village of Cavisom before returning to our hotel.

Walk through Pasabaglari (Monks) Valley; trek up Bozdag, the highest point in the area offering stunning views

Today our trek takes us through Pasabaglari, formerly known as Monk's Valley. Here it is possible to see the dwellings of the hermits of Cappadocia who distanced themselves from the world by carving their abodes high up in the rock chimneys, using footholes and rope to climb in. Inside these dwellings are surprisingly spacious with some rooms hollowed out to around 15m high. Once through the valley we head up to Bozdag, the highest point in Cappadocia, offering some outstanding views.

Visit the underground city of Kaymakli; afternoon walk through the Ihlara Valley, the deepest, longest canyon in Cappadocia

In the morning we transfer to the underground city of Kaymakli, built by early Christians to avoid religious persecution. This fascinating construction is an elaborate system of tunnels and caves, featuring everything from communal living spaces and kitchens, to stables, a church and graveyard, not to mention being fortified to protect its inhabitants. We then drive to the village of Selime where we begin our walk following the Melendiz river until we reach Belisirma where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon we head down the Ihlara Valley, the deepest and longest valley in the region, passing Byzantine monasteries and churches that date back to the 11th Century, before arriving back in Cappadocia.

Walk along the Zindanonu Valley passing the Goreme open air museum with carved caves and Byzantine frescoes

Our last day takes us through the Zindanonu Valley and up onto a viewpoint of the town of Goreme and the Goreme open air museum. The Goreme Valley itself holds some of the finest collections of painted cave churches in the region. In around 1000-1200 AD orthodox monks carved places of worship from the soft volcanic stone and decorated them with beautifully elaborate Byzantine frescoes, many of which are still very much intact to this day. The late afternoon is then free to unwind after a truly memorable week.

Food & Transport

Eating & Drinking

All breakfasts, 6 lunches and 6 dinners included.

Typical Meals:

Breakfast: typically comprising a selection of tea, coffee, bread, butter, jam, cheese, olives, cucumber, tomatoes and yoghurt.

Lunch and dinner: often a buffet arrangement with several freshly cooked dishes to choose from. Kebabs are of course to be found everywhere.

Most people find that Turkish cuisine is one of the most varied in the world and there is usually something to please everyone. Vegetarians will generally find themselves well catered for as many Turkish dishes are based on vegetables and dairy products.

Please note that in Turkey the availability of certain specialised products for restricted diets, e.g. gluten-free or dairy-free, is minimal or non-existent and we strongly recommend you bring these specialized dietary items from home.

Drinks are not included with meals (except breakfast) as a wide variety is normally available and this allows you greater choice. Mineral water, excellent fruit juices, beer and wine are generally readily available at about half to three-quarters of the UK price, depending on locality. Tea (usually taken in small glasses) is cheap, and so is Turkish coffee (strong, taken in small cups). European instant coffee and spirits can be more expensive.

Transportation

Transport for the transfers will be an air conditioned mini or midi bus, depending on the size of the group.

Weather & Seasonality

Weather Information

Daytime temperatures in Cappadocia will range from 22-30 degrees in summer at low altitudes. Early mornings may be cooler later in the season. Summers are usually dry, however, rain is possible at any time and the odd storm cannot be ruled out.

Practical Information

Passport

Turkey

All nationalities require a full passport that must be valid for 6 months beyond the intended length of stay. It is your responsibility to have the correct personal documents and to obtain your own visa, if one is necessary, in accordance with the regulations of the country you are to visit. The information below is primarily for UK passport holders, and other nationalities should check with their travel agent or the relevant embassies. We are not responsible for the actions of local immigration and customs officials, whether at points of entry or otherwise, and any subsequent effects.

Visa

Turkey

From 2 March 2020, nationals of Great Britain, the European Union Schengen area, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Poland travelling to Turkey for tourist or business purposes will no longer need a visa for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. If you’re travelling before 2 March, you will still need a visa.

Visa regulations can change without notice: please check the current regulations in good time to obtain a visa if one is required.

Vaccination

Turkey

There are no mandatory vaccination requirements.

Travel health can often be something people forget about before going away, but a little preparation and knowledge can go a long way to help you stay fit and healthy while abroad.

The risk of malaria on this trip is slight, but you may wish to consult your GP or travel health clinic for further advice.

As we are not qualified to answer all your questions about travel health we strongly recommend you contact your Medical Professional or a Travel Health Clinic at least 8 weeks prior to departure for up-to-date information. Please note: vaccinations that are routinely recommended to residents of the UK, North America or Australasia are not considered to form part of the travel health advice, and you should ensure these are kept up to date where necessary.

For additional information please visit: https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries

Insurance - are you adequately covered?

It is a condition of joining any of our holidays that you must be fully insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs and air ambulance or helicopter rescue services where appropriate). On arrival in destination for your trip, you will be asked to present details to your leader or local representative of your policy.

If you are resident in the UK we strongly recommend the Exodus travel insurance policy, this is specifically designed to cover all activities on your trip. If arranging your own policy please ensure that you are covered for all activities that are part of the trip, optional activities that you intend to take part in and/or on high altitude itineraries, that you are covered up to the maximum altitude of the trip.

Local Time

Turkey's Timezone:

Electricity

Turkey's Electricity:

Standard European Adapter required.

Money

Turkey's Currency

The national currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira (TRL), with an exchange rate at the time of publication (September 2019) of approximately 7.1 to the GBP, 5.7 to the USD, 4.3 to the CAD, 6.3 to the EUR, 3.9 to the AUD and 3.6 to the NZD.

There are no restrictions on the import of Turkish currency, though local exchange rates are invariably better than those in the UK. The exchange does fluctuate quite considerably, so it is best to check just before departure.

ATM Availability

We recommend that you do not bring travellers cheques. It is best to use a mixture of Sterling cash and ATMs. Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted in shops for larger purchases. Turkey has a good network of cash machines in built up areas, which can be used to get advances in lira. It should be noted that Scottish notes are not accepted in Turkey.

Extra Expenses & Spending Money

You should allow £10 - £20 (approx. US$13-US$26) for each dinner not included. Local Turkish restaurants can be cheap and very good, 'tourist' restaurants are good but more expensive. Please allow extra for drinks.

Optional Excursions

Hot air balloon rides can be arranged locally, depending on weather conditions, for approximately €175 per person.

Tipping

Although optional, a tip for the leader at the end of the trip is greatly appreciated. As a guideline, we recommend a contribution of between EUR15 and EUR20 per client per week. It is also customary to leave a tip for any additional local staff who support your holiday – for example drivers, cooks and hotel staff. This can be handed in to your leader at the end of the week to distribute accordingly. In total for the leader to distribute to all relevant staff, we recommend to budget approx. EUR10-EUR15 per person per week. Our local staff are paid well and fairly for their work with Exodus. Most of our clients wish to give a tip to their guides in appreciation of their help and friendliness. This, of course, is in no way compulsory and depends on the service received. For this trip, we recommend to allow approx. £15 per person for the guide.

Important Information

On all guided trips

Although our leaders are well trained to deal with different capabilities, if they have any concerns about someone’s ability to safely partake in an activity, or their impact on other people’s enjoyment, we authorise them to take necessary action which, in some circumstances, may involve asking someone to miss that activity.

Although rarely enforced, by booking this trip you agree to section 14 of our Booking Conditions which clearly states that our leaders have the authority to do this. In these circumstances we will ensure anyone sitting out is safely provided for and offered alternative options where possible. Refunds will not be provided for activities missed and customers may be liable for additional costs incurred.

On all trips

In booking this trip you should be confident in your ability to participate in all activities described in these Trip Notes. If you have any doubt about your suitability you should call the Exodus office and ask to speak to one of the experts on this itinerary.

Every time that you travel abroad you should take the time to read the warnings in the essential information in the brochure.

Full joining instructions including local emergency numbers, and details of how to reach the start point, will be sent to you approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to departure. If you do not receive these at least a week before departure, or require them earlier please contact our office or your travel agent.

The information in these Trip Notes is given in good faith. Where differences exist between the Trip Notes and our current brochure or website, the Trip Notes supersede the brochure and website. All holidays can be subject to unexpected changes; in order to enjoy them you should be prepared to be flexible where necessary. Occasionally, as stated in our brochure, it may not be possible to follow the itinerary as planned. This may be for a variety of reasons - climatic, political, physical or other. In these circumstances we will make the best possible alternative arrangements that maintain the integrity of the original itinerary.

As fuel prices, airport taxes and exchange rates fluctuate, and airlines manage their rates to match demand, it is proving harder than ever to guarantee our Flight Inclusive prices. Although we endeavour to keep our website as accurate as possible, daily fluctuations mean that our Flight Inclusive price may be out of date. For accurate prices we recommend that you contact one of our Travel Experts, or your Travel Agent.
