A popular trekking base, it overlooks the terraced rice fields of the Muong Hoa Valley, and is near the 3,143m-tall Phang Xi Pang peak, which is climbable via a steep, multiday guided walk. Sapa - Ma Tra Village

After having breakfast, we will take a private transfer to Sapa. The journey takes about 5 hours and you will arrive in Sapa around noon. In the afternoon, we start to visit Sapa by a 5km road transfer out of Sapa town. The walk starts from here, downhill and across the stream to the other bank where Suoi Ho village beautifully sits on the top of a low hill. Spend half an hour to visit several local homes and learn about the local life before continuing walking to Ma Tra village. This portion of the walk offers beautiful scenery of the valley and terraced paddies as well as a flower farm. Pay a visit to a ruined of the French Catholic church at the end of the walk then transfer by road back to Sapa.

  • Day 3

    Ban Khoang Village

Leaving Sapa at about 08.30am, head northwards along the national road 4C for 8km to O Quy Ho with several stops to view the magnificent landscapes of Fansipan, Sin Chai valley and especially amazing flower and vegetable farms. Drive through a wild region with thick rainforest covering walled-up mountains, passing a beautiful waterfall before arriving to Ban Khoang, home to the Black Hmong & Red Zao ethnic peoples who live their unique way of life and well maintain their traditional values. The villages here are prosperous thanks to the combination of wet rice cultivation on the terraced fields with cardamom farming under the shade of the thick rainforest. Spend over an hour walking to explore this remote village for a brief understanding of local life. Leaving Ban Khoang, head to Ta Giang Phin valley inhabited by the Black Hmong who live in several hamlets scattered along a peaceful stream. Enjoy an hour lunch break on the bank of the stream. Enjoy about 2 hours walking along the village path which connects hamlets to hamlets witnessing the daily activities of local life such as people ploughing and harrowing the fields, growing, harvesting or doing house chores. In the leisure months, men often gather to build new houses or repair parts of the old ones while women stay home making their traditional costumes. The walk ends in mid afternoon. You will be picked up for your drive back to Sapa.

Spend two hours joining the local tribal people including Flower H’mong, Black Zao, Phu La and Tay for the festive market activities where people in their best traditional costumes gather every Saturday for shopping and socializing. This is an ideal opportunity for taking photos, not only of people in colorful traditional costumes but also breathtaking landscapes. Leaving the market around noon, drirve 20 km back to Bac Ha town for lunch. Leaving Bac Ha after lunch for a half an hour drive downhill to Trung Do village which hides itself in a lush valley on the eastern bank of the Chay River. Take a leisurely walk to explore this prosperous village of the Tay ethnic people who live in spacious houses built on stilts and their interesting culture. Walk to the river bank mid afternoon, get on board a local motor boat and cruise down the mighty Chay River to Bao Nhai. The boat trip ends at Bao Tan Village. Essential Info

A visa is no longer needed for British, German, French, Spanish and Italian citizens travelling to Vietnam (for all purposes) for a period of up to 15 days, and on the basis of meeting all conditions prescribed by Vietnamese laws. The visa exemption period will end on 30 June 2018. All other nationalities require a visa to enter Vietnam and this must be obtained prior to departure. For further information see or the FCO site and check under Vietnam / 'Entry Requirements'.

There are no mandatory vaccination requirements. Recommended vaccinations are: Tetanus, Polio, Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Diphtheria.
The risk of malaria is slight, but you may wish to consult your GP or travel health clinic for further advice. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available for Dengue, and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Eating and Drinking

4 breakfasts and 2 lunches

In much of Vietnam, the weather will be hot and humid with temperatures ranging from 28ºC to 34ºC in the day, and a little cooler at nights. Vietnam offers a range of seasons between the north and south. Hanoi is cool in autumn, and gets chilly between November and February, with drizzly rain (10º- 20ºC). The south up to Hue has a distinct dry season between December to April and a rainy season from May to November, where short heavy bursts of rain with bright sunshine in between is common. There is no ideal time to visit Vietnam; weather can be described as pleasant all year round, but due to the shape of the country it is unlikely that the weather will be perfect for the entire duration of the trip. The dry season, between November and April, is characterised by hot days and mostly clear skies, but expect the odd shower. The monsoon period running from May to October is generally overcast with short and sharp bursts of rain, but this can be a very atmospheric time to travel – just bring an umbrella or a cheap local poncho! April and October are transition months

An overview of flight options

Exodus is committed to making joining our tours as easy as possible, wherever you live. We generally only block book seats from London, but this certainly does not mean that you need to fly from there. Depending on the route and airlines available, there will usually be various options available for those who want to fly from their local airport.

This page aims to provide a useful overview of the options available to our clients. However, the best flight arrangements should be tailored to your personal requirements, so please contact our Sales team for expert advice.

What kind of options do I have ?

1. We can book for you: Flights from anywhere in the world - not via London

Depending on the route, this may be direct or via an overseas hub like Amsterdam, the Middle East or elsewhere. On short haul routes there may be direct flights with low cost airlines, charter flights or scheduled airlines. Exodus can book most, but not all, of these for you. The most appropriate airline may be different to that which we use for the group flight from London, but many people now travel on different airlines and meet up with their fellow passengers at the destination.

Pros Cons
  • May be the most direct route
  • Often the extra fare compared to the London flight is minimal.
  • As you will be in the hands a single airline for your entire journey, the airline will be responsible for your bags and your connections.
  • You may not be able to join the group transfers. However, we can usually arrange private transfers, or book your flights to try and coincide with the group transfers. See notes on transfer arrangements below.

2. We can book for you: Connecting flights from your local airport to London

Exodus can book connecting flights to London so you can join the group flight there. Connecting times will be followed according to airline advice, or as requested by clients. There are two types of fares we can use for this option: a 'through-fare' or a 'published fare'.
a) A 'through-fare' is where you will be in the main airline's care throughout. You change planes, but your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination.

b) A 'published fare' ticket is completely seperate from your onward ticket from London. It is usually cheaper than a through-fare but will need to be paid for and issued as soon as it is booked. This can be a problem if your tour has not yet reached minimum numbers. On 'published fares' neither airline is aware that you have connecting flights, so Exodus is responsible for timing your connection, not the airlines involved. The tickets are also usually non changeable and non refundable.

Pros Cons
  • Depending on the fare type, Exodus or the airline is responsible for flight connections.
  • Through fare tickets can be expensive.
  • On a published fare, tickets must be issued immediately; tickets on published fares can be very difficult to change if onward flight times change; bags are not checked though to your final destination.
  • Published fares are non-refundable.

3. Booking some or all of the flights yourself

You can also book connecting air travel yourself, either to London, or all the way to the start point. There may be certain airlines or routes we don't have access to, so this is always an option. However, if you make your own travel arrangements you become liable for any delays, cancellations or missed connections, and Exodus is not required to offer refunds if you have trouble reaching the start of your trip.

Pros Cons
  • You might find cheaper fares, or routes not available to Exodus.
  • You are responsible for any delays or missed connections, and the cost of the tour is not protected should you miss your flight be cancelled.

 Notes on transfer arrangements

Sometimes it is possible to travel on a different airline to the group flight from London. Where this is the case, we need to think about ensuring you meet up with the group with minimum extra cost and hassle.

  • On certain trips, it is easy to arrive on a different flight and still meet the group at the hotel with time in hand. We can usually arrange private transfers (at extra cost) or offer advice on taking a taxi to the start hotel.
  • On other trips (especially in Europe), the transfer meets the group flight and then travels some distance to the first night's accommodation. Where this is the case, our Sales team will try to arrange flights that arrive before (and depart after) the group. However, we do have to make it clear in your final documentation that if your flights are delayed, the transfer cannot wait for you. While Exodus or our local operators will do what we can to help you reach the start point of the tour, any additional costs must be paid by the client.
