Sustainable Travel

Sustainable Travel: For People, Places and Planet

Travel enriches our lives. The awe-inspiring, horizon-expanding, life-changing experiences we have on our adventures help us to see the world differently. But at Exodus Edits, we don’t believe that these opportunities should be at any cost. The privilege of our travels should do good for the people who live in the places we visit. Tourism shouldn’t destroy our planet, whether that is economically, culturally or environmentally.

Live Adventure, Give Adventure

Seeing legendary landmarks is part of what makes us curious to travel. But so many people who live in the places we dream of going to have never seen the wonders of their own countries for themselves.

That’s where the Inspiration Project comes in. Since 2017, our guides have been taking disadvantaged children to see their country’s famous sights. These experiences allow children to venture outside of their community (sometimes for the first time) and understand what makes their country special.

The People We Meet

Our expert tour leaders are all locals. For them, it creates employment opportunities. For you, it means you’ve got a genuine expert on-hand. We also pursue employment equality by providing jobs for women working with our trips, especially in countries where gender parity can be unbalanced.

It’s not just about opportunities. It’s about safeguarding too. We promote the protection of human rights across all our trips and avoid damaging practices like orphanage tourism.

You’ll usually find locally-owned hotels and restaurants on your itinerary. The reason is simple - these choices help boost local economies by keeping more money in the communities that you visit. Plus, it’s better for you, because the experiences you have are more authentic. And isn’t that what it should be all about?

The Places We Visit

We tread lightly by travelling in small groups. It minimises our impact on local resources, and we can integrate ourselves more easily. It’s not just what we take away - we’re also mindful of what we leave behind. Waste and the damage it does to our world has not escaped anyone’s attention. We have eliminated single-use plastic bottles from 99% of our trips. We’re committed to reducing the use of other single-use plastics too, reducing food waste on trips, and always encourage recycling as a minimum.

We actively protect animals and respect the biodiversity of the places we visit. The conservation of the environment has always been at the core of our ethos, and always will be. You’ll never find harmful activities such as elephant riding and captive sealife tourism on our itineraries. Instead, we contribute to the conservation of the landscapes we love so that others can experience them too.

The Planet We Explore

We believe that sustainable travel can bring positive social and environmental changes. But there’s tension between these benefits and the urgency of reducing the world’s carbon footprint. At Exodus Edits, we work hard to do more good than harm.

How? Well, we favour eco-hotels with sustainability credentials where possible. We choose restaurants that use locally-sourced ingredients to minimise food miles. And we always ensure there are vegetarian (and ideally, vegan) options available.

You might find your itinerary includes bikes or public transport.  Never big coaches or mega cruise ships. But we know we can do more. We’re developing a plan to reduce our carbon footprint further. Part of this includes asking people who travel with us how they think we should be helping them take lower carbon travels. If you have any thoughts, we’re all ears at [email protected]

Each time you book an adventure with Exodus Edits, we’ll contribute £15 to the Inspiration Project.

That’s enough money to fund a day trip for a local child. Children in Kenya have joined safaris to see lions in the Naoisho Conservancy. In India, children have glimpsed the majesty of the Taj Mahal for the very first time. And in Cambodia, they’ve visited the incredible Angor Wat that they’ve only ever heard about.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

We reached out to our whole wide community of responsible adventures – our team, clients and partners on the ground - to understand which areas of social and environmental impact Exodus Travels should prioritise. As a result, our People, Places and Planet plan focuses on working towards six key UN Sustainable Development Goals:

Goal 8 - Decent work and economic growth
Goal 11 - Sustainable cities and communities
Goal 12 - Responsible consumption and production
Goal 13 - Climate action
Goal 14 - Life below water
Goal 15 - Life on land

The Exodus Travels Foundation

For every Exodus Edits trip booked, we’ll donate to The Exodus Travels Foundation. Donations to our Foundation go towards projects that educate and protect the communities and people in the destinations that we visit and improve life in hard-to-reach places. Read more about our Foundation’s work here.
