Family adventure in search for Africa's largest residents in the Masai Mara and Lake Naivasha.

Kenya is the classic African safari destination and this seven-day family adventure is a great introduction to the continent’s famous residents. The Masai Mara, with its endless grasslands sprinkled with acacia trees and an astonishing variety of wildlife, is the ideal place for children to have their first sightings of lions, elephants, giraffes and cheetahs. Lake Naivasha, located in the Great Rift Valley, is an unforgettable setting where we have the chance to view hippos on a boat safari. Then in Nairobi there is the elephant orphanage and giraffe centre where we learn about the conservation work being done to protect these magnificent animals.

  • Day 1

Start Nairobi; visit elephant orphanage and giraffe centre.

The group flight arrives into Nairobi this morning and will be met and transferred to the start hotel. Land Only clients should also aim to arrive at the hotel this morning. From the hotel, we transfer to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage‎ where we can meet the calves being rehabilitated. These elephants were rescued when they lost their mothers and so are being raised at the orphanage until they can be released back into the wild. To date the wildlife trust has successfully hand-raised over 150 infant elephants. We continue onto the Giraffe Centre, another of Nairobi’s conservation projects. At the centre it is possible to feed the giraffe from an elevated platform and learn more about the work that they do. The rest of the day is free to relax.

    Panafric Hotel or similar

  • Day 2

To Lake Naivasha; boat ride in the afternoon.

After breakfast at the hotel, we drive northwest to the edge of the Great Rift Valley to take in some spectacular scenery before descending into the valley and onto Lake Naivasha. Surrounded by grassy banks and dotted with floating reed islands, the lake is home to a healthy population of hippos and tremendous variety of birds. This afternoon we enjoy a cruise on the lake in search of hippos. If we’re lucky we should also see giraffe and antelope grazing on the shores of the lake.

    Crescent Camp or similar

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 3

Free day; optional safari in Lake Nakuru N.P.

Today is a free day to relax or enjoy the optional activities on offer in and around the lake. Possible activities include an excursion to the Crater Lake Game Sanctuary or a daytrip to Lake Nakuru, one of the best places in Africa to see rhino.

    Crescent Camp or similar

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 4

Transfer to the Masai Mara; afternoon game drive.

This morning we journey south to the Masai Mara National Reserve. The drive takes approximately 6 hours but we have regular stops along the way. The Masai Mara is one of the most famous ecosystems in the world and with good reason. This huge expanse of grassland is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife such as elephant, buffalo, zebra, crocodile, ostrich, hyena, rhino, cheetah, leopard and lion. Between mid-August to late October one of the greatest spectacles on Earth takes place in the Masai Mara – the annual wildebeest migration. Over one million wildebeest are joined by zebra and gazelle as they move into the reserve seeking fresh grazing. Nothing is guaranteed on safari, but with the help of our brilliant guides you should see and learn a huge amount about the resident wildlife as we game drive through the park this afternoon.

    Mara Springs Camp or similar

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 5

Full day in the Masai Mara.

Rising early this morning we embark on a full day game drive in the Masai Mara National Reserve. During the course of the day we have a good chance of seeing a multitude of wildlife as we explore the Mara’s vast open plains. There is also the opportunity to do an optional hot air balloon safari in time for sunrise – this is an especially memorable experience during the wildebeest migration as it is only from this vantage point that you can truly appreciate the scale of this natural wonder.

    Mara Springs Camp or similar

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 6

Optional morning game drive; return to Nairobi.

There is one last chance to go into the reserve for an optional morning game drive before we say goodbye to the Masai Mara and return to the bustling metropolis of Nairobi. This is another 6 hour drive but we should arrive at our hotel with plenty of time to relax, freshen-up and enjoy the hotel’s facilities. This evening we can enjoy our final dinner together at one of Nairobi’s restaurants.

    Panafric Hotel or similar

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 7

    End Nairobi.

Our trip ends this morning. Those on the group flights will be taken to airport for the flight to London.

Essential Info

Most nationalities do now require a visa for Kenya, including Britons, most EU nationals, Australians, New Zealanders, Americans and Canadians.  At present single entry and transit visas are available online (see below) and soon all visas will have to be obtained online. Alternatively visas are available in advance or on arrival. The Kenyan government are planning for all visas to be obtained online and may stop delivering visas on arrival on short notice. For the latest information please contact your local Kenyan High Commission or Consulate.
For information about the online application process please visit http://evisa.go.ke/evisa.html.
The cost of the visa is US$50 for a single entry visa and US$100 for an East Africa visa (valid to travel in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda).
You will need to first register to the ecitizens website (including needing a photo 500px x 500px) before you can start applying.
For the application process itself you will need details of the accommodation used (which we will send you) and itinerary as well as a photo 5.5cm x 5.5cm and a scanned or photographed copy of your passport’s bio/photo page.
If after visiting Kenya you will also travel to Uganda and Rwanda, you may apply for East African Visa that will cover all three countries. This  visa is currently available upon arrival in Nairobi. Please contact the Kenyan High Commission to obtain more information about the combined visa from Kenya.

There are no mandatory vaccination requirements. Recommended vaccinations are: Polio, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Typhoid, Hepatitis A. Malaria prophylaxis is essential and we suggest that you seek advice from your GP or travel health clinic about which malaria tablets to take. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available for Dengue, and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Eating and Drinking

All breakfasts , 4 lunches and 4 dinners included.

Breakfasts will usually include cereal, toast and hot food such as porridge or eggs. Lunches tend to feature a range of sandwich options as well as a selection of fruit. Dinners usually feature soup, main (a mix of local and international cuisine) and dessert. You will have time to stock up on snacks and drinks along the journey.

Kenya straddles the equator so showers can occur at any time of year, however the wettest period is April and May. Due to the altitude of the Masai Mara (1550m) the night time temperature is comfortable, cool yet not cold. Daytime temperatures can get as high as 30ºC but with low humidity. There can be light rains at the end of the year, but if anything this is a good thing as it cuts down the dust and brings out the colours. In the wet the roads can become difficult and a little patience and pushing may be required! Please be aware that over recent years weather patterns have changed and are now somewhat unpredictable.

Is this trip for you?

This trip has been graded 3 (Moderate) for children aged 9-12 years old. Although the itinerary has been designed with 9-12 year olds in mind, it is also suitable for 13-16 year olds.

Transport is typically in a specialist overland vehicle with good visibility and 4WD vehicles in the Masai Mara. There will be some early mornings and two long drives of approximately 6hrs (to and from the Masai Mara). Although the distances covered are not particularly long, some of the roads are poor which adds to the journey times. However, the scenery, wildlife and chance to see more of Kenyan life make the journeys enjoyable. We include breaks for toilet facilities, shopping, photos and meals and there is also a reference library on board the vehicle.

The game drive in the Masai Mara on Day 5 will involve waking up before sunrise and spending a full day in a 4WD vehicle. As this is within a national park with dangerous animals roaming, opportunities for toilet breaks are limited. The Masai Mara is one of the best destinations in the world for seeing wildlife but there can never be any guarantees when it comes to seeing animals in the wild – therefore, there is the possibility of not much happening for parts of the day while our guides search for our next viewing.

We use hotels in Nairobi and permanent tented camps in Naivasha and the Masai Mara. The permanent tents are spacious with beds and en suite bathrooms. The accommodation in Nairobi and Naivasha have swimming pools.

Following a review of all our trips we have categorised this trip as generally not suitable for persons of reduced mobility. However if you are a regular traveller on such trips, please contact customer services to discuss the trip and your personal condition.

Hotels & Permanent Tented Camps

On these departures we spend 2 nights in hotels and 4 nights in permanent tented camps.

All the accommodation is en suite and relatively comfortable, though not luxurious. We have selected, whenever possible, properties in or near the national parks we visit to enrich the wilderness experience of this trip.

The permanent tented camps that we use are at well-equipped resorts with spacious, walk-in tents with beds and furniture. Most of these resorts have additional facilities such as a swimming pool, bar and sometimes WiFi.

Single supplement is available.

An overview of flight options

Exodus is committed to making joining our tours as easy as possible, wherever you live. We generally only block book seats from London, but this certainly does not mean that you need to fly from there. Depending on the route and airlines available, there will usually be various options available for those who want to fly from their local airport.

This page aims to provide a useful overview of the options available to our clients. However, the best flight arrangements should be tailored to your personal requirements, so please contact our Sales team for expert advice.

What kind of options do I have ?

1. We can book for you: Flights from anywhere in the world - not via London

Depending on the route, this may be direct or via an overseas hub like Amsterdam, the Middle East or elsewhere. On short haul routes there may be direct flights with low cost airlines, charter flights or scheduled airlines. Exodus can book most, but not all, of these for you. The most appropriate airline may be different to that which we use for the group flight from London, but many people now travel on different airlines and meet up with their fellow passengers at the destination.

Pros  Cons
  • May be the most direct route
  • Often the extra fare compared to the London flight is minimal.
  • As you will be in the hands a single airline for your entire journey, the airline will be responsible for your bags and your connections.
  • You may not be able to join the group transfers. However, we can usually arrange private transfers, or book your flights to try and coincide with the group transfers. See notes on transfer arrangements below.

2. We can book for you: Connecting flights from your local airport to London

Exodus can book connecting flights to London so you can join the group flight there. Connecting times will be followed according to airline advice, or as requested by clients. There are two types of fares we can use for this option: a 'through-fare' or a 'published fare'.
a) A 'through-fare' is where you will be in the main airline's care throughout. You change planes, but your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination.

b) A 'published fare' ticket is completely seperate from your onward ticket from London. It is usually cheaper than a through-fare but will need to be paid for and issued as soon as it is booked. This can be a problem if your tour has not yet reached minimum numbers. On 'published fares' neither airline is aware that you have connecting flights, so Exodus is responsible for timing your connection, not the airlines involved. The tickets are also usually non changeable and non refundable.

Pros  Cons
  • Depending on the fare type, Exodus or the airline is responsible for flight connections.
  • Through fare tickets can be expensive.
  • On a published fare, tickets must be issued immediately; tickets on published fares can be very difficult to change if onward flight times change; bags are not checked though to your final destination.
  • Published fares are non-refundable.

3. Booking some or all of the flights yourself

You can also book connecting air travel yourself, either to London, or all the way to the start point. There may be certain airlines or routes we don't have access to, so this is always an option. However, if you make your own travel arrangements you become liable for any delays, cancellations or missed connections, and Exodus is not required to offer refunds if you have trouble reaching the start of your trip.

Pros  Cons
  • You might find cheaper fares, or routes not available to Exodus.
  • You are responsible for any delays or missed connections, and the cost of the tour is not protected should you miss your flight be cancelled.

 Notes on transfer arrangements

Sometimes it is possible to travel on a different airline to the group flight from London. Where this is the case, we need to think about ensuring you meet up with the group with minimum extra cost and hassle.

  • On certain trips, it is easy to arrive on a different flight and still meet the group at the hotel with time in hand. We can usually arrange private transfers (at extra cost) or offer advice on taking a taxi to the start hotel.
  • On other trips (especially in Europe), the transfer meets the group flight and then travels some distance to the first night's accommodation. Where this is the case, our Sales team will try to arrange flights that arrive before (and depart after) the group. However, we do have to make it clear in your final documentation that if your flights are delayed, the transfer cannot wait for you. While Exodus or our local operators will do what we can to help you reach the start point of the tour, any additional costs must be paid by the client.
