Everest Base Camp and Lakes April 2019

Anyone going on the 17th of April? Thought I'd get the ball rolling!

Hi Kevin,

How are you? I am going on this trip from London on the group flight Exodus has arranged. How about you?

Hi Kevin,

How are you? I am going on this trip from London on the group flight Exodus has arranged. How about you?

Hello, nice to meet you. Have you done this kind of thing before then? I'm flying from Manchester so I won't be travelling with the rest of the group. Decided to save myself the journey down to London for a change. 😉

Hey Kevin,

No, I have not been on a trekking holiday as long as this one is going to be. :)  I am doing the Mt Toubkal trek next week in preparation for the trip to Nepal. Which airline are you flying with?

Hi Kevin i am travelling to Kathmandu via Abu Dhabi from Manchester on 17th April  for the EBC Trek.

First time experience for me,really looking forward to this.

regards Rob

I'm flying with Etihad. First time so high for me but plenty of hiking/trekking under my belt. Looking forward to it. Trying to work on my cardio in preparation. Can't wait to see the views.

I'm on Etihad too, flight number EY22 20:35.hrs.

I've been out doing plenty of mike's too in readiness.

I am flying with Emirates from London to Kathmandu via Dubai, arrival is at 8:40 on 18th April. I have never been at altitude this high before either, I am very excited to visit that area and looking forward to the scenery. I must admit I do more jogging than walking, but every little helps I guess..

I think there will be a shuttle bus service from Kathmandu airport to the hotel, organised by Exodus. Liklehood is most people will fly from London and meet at the airport on landing.

Rob, we should meet at Manchester airport beforehand

I had an email notification about changes to the flight times about 4 weeks ago. I think we were due to land at pretty much the same time as the London flight. Not sure this is still the case, will have to check

Good luck with your preperations gents, I've just had a big night out in Manchester and haven't been running for almost a week now!!

I think jogging will probably help more than walking anyway Zsuzsa

Apparently smokers fair well at altitude because the body has already adapted to increased levels of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream. I'm not about to test this theory though! :-)

Hi Kev im up for meeting at  Manchester are you on flight EY22.

I must add that my trek doesnt include the lakes. Its just the base camp trek.

I'll check my flight reference and will let you know. Are we on seperate trips then? Or does the group split into two ?

Must be separate hikes kev I haven't seen anything in the itinerary about lakes.

So it looks like there is a normal EVB trip starting on 17th April and then there is the the one that goes to the Gokyo lakes, also starting on 17th. The first one is trip code TNT and ours is TNE, I think Rob you are on the TNT one and we are on the other...😣

P.s.: I have become a bit lazier the past few days, no running is being done... 😳 is swimming any good replacement? 😁

Swimming is good cardio 👍

Hey Kevin,

Can I please ask you two things:

1. Are you going to get your visa in England or out there?

2. Have you sorted out a travel insurance and if you have, who is your provider?

I am finding the Exodus insurance a bit expensive... I only need it for this trip as I have an annual cover up to 5000 meters otherwise. But I most certainly do not want to get some insurance that turns out to be useless if -God forbid- I need to utilise it. So yes, please let me know and have a nice weekend!

Hello, if you already have cover above 5000m then I imagine you could pick up insurance from a number of providers for a good price? I booked mine through True Traveller at a cost of 122 pounds. Helicopter cover pushed the price up. I did get another qoute for £228! 😫. As for the Visa, I'm going to apply first thing next week provided the turnaround time isn't too long. Sorry for the late reply.

Hey Kevin, Well I have taken out insurance from insureandgo, £60, they do not cover search and rescue, but they do cover air ambulance, hopefully I will not need it...

good news on the visa thing is that I did it in the post and the whole thing was done and dusted in 3 working days, amazingly quick turnaround!

Hey, we (Jo and Lauren) are on the EBC + lake trek starting on the 17th April. We’re flying to Kathmandu from Glasgow, arriving at about 6:20pm on the 18th. We both can’t wait for the trip and look forward to meeting you all :-)

Hey Jo! Looking forward to it!

Hey guys,

I've just checked the internal flight allowance on the trip notes. It's less than half the long haul limit

Holdall has to be no heavier than 10kg and hand luggage 5kg

This makes matching the packing list up weight wise very difficult

Anyone else having this problem or knows something I don't? 😯

Hi Kevin,

We spotted that too :-/

We plan to take a suitcase in the long haul and leave that behind in the hotel, along with our clean clothes to travel home in. I read that once we arrive in Lukla then we can transfer 2kg (not much i know) to our holdall as the weight limit for the trek is 12kg each plus your day bag. I think we just have to pack the bare minimum but you can always make final decisions at the hotel if you take a suitcase or bag to leave behind?

Jo

Cheers,

I've just called them. They confirmed that a couple of kilos over isn't the end of the world. They charge a few quid for each kilo over. I'm going to have to get creative with my packing! There is no way that packing list they sent equates to 15 kilos. There's going to be some major hand washing going on! 😂

Hi Jo, Lauren, Kevin,

I was thinking the same, in terms of hand washing... my holdall was 14kg for the 9-day Moroccob trip, I have to do some serious rethinking if I want to bring this in around 12 kgs for 19 days... 😂

This guy will maybe inspire you :-D

Hi Zsuzsa, look forward to hearing about your trip to Morocco! I'm in denial about the packing at the moment as i'm always a last min packer. I think i'll end up having a last minute cull at the hotel :-D

Hi Zsuzsa, looking forward to hearing about your Morocco trip! I'm in denial about packing as i always leave it to last minute but i'm thinking i'll need to do a big cull at the hotel :-D

Hey Jo, I must watch the video after work, I do need some inspiration. I have not started packing yet either.. So all this means that at least we will not spend a huge amount of money on souvenirs at Namche Bazaar... :)

Good luck to everybody, I am very excited, I hope I will be able to keep up with the daily trekking!!!!

Good luck to you too! I'm really getting excited too!! :)

Don't worry about the trekking, we'll be going at a really easy pace due to the altitude. Look forward to meeting you all.

I just remembered: do not forget guys to bring 2 photos for the trekking permit! This is on top of the photo that you need for the visa (if you are gettign the visa there that is).

Hi any recommendations as to which travel plug is needed to charge devices such as camera and phone.

Just buy a multi one Rob. I imagine it's 2 oin but if you look on Amazon you'll find some good multi adaptable ones.

*pin

If it's 2 pin I'm ok then I have one of those.

Thanks kevin

Hey Rob,

Did a bit of digging. There are three plug types! C, D and M. Two cylinder pins, three cylinder pins -triangle and three cylinder pins horizontal. 🤣. Good luck. Good news is, Nepal runs off the same voltage so charging times should be what you'd expect.

Yes i saw that  Kevin that there was C,D, and M.😂

That's why I thought I'd ask on here, maybe I will wait and buy one when I get there.

I'm banking on most being C

What's happened to the other 8 members of our trek? 🤣

So am I Kev I've got one of those.😂

So am I Kev I've got one of those.😂

I'm coming in at 12 kilos approx. Hand luggage is over five though. Only solution may be to dress like the Michelin man pre internal flight. Should be nice and uncomfortable if Kathmandu is touching 30 degrees celcius! 12KG is only achievable due to all these lightweight fabrics. Shame I can't drop the soap!! 😯

I am still at the how many tshirts and pair of trousers to bring phase...🧐

Hey Jo, Kevin,

Emirates just went and changed my flight 4 days prior to departure, so now I am going to get -hopefully- at 18:30 on 18th April, is that when you guys are arriving or earlier?

Thank you

Hello,

I'm arriving at 16:10. Etihad changed times on me a few months back.

Packing wise, i'm taking 4 walking t shirts, 2 synthetic quick drying and two Merino wool for the colder days. 5 pairs of walking socks and 5 pairs of walking undies. Wash amd go, wash and go. Hope this helps. ☺

And*

See you at the hotel ☺

Three pairs of teousers - again 1 pair for warmer days, one for colder and a warm pair for evenings. I'm also taking one pair of shorts.
