Witness 5 Incredible Wildlife Encounters with Our Summer Adventures

Whether you want to witness Green turtles laying their eggs in Tortuguero or watch whales gliding through the Pacific Ocean, we have a wonderful selection of wildlife encounters on our Summer of Adventure. Why not visit Yala National Park between June and August when there’s less rainfall and leopards are easier to spot? Or perhaps you’d rather explore Etosha National Park during the dry season from July to September when water is more in demand and species such as elephants, wildebeest, zebra and lions can be seen gathering around the water holes. As well as taking advantage of these incredible wildlife watching opportunities, you can also save up to £300 off selected departures during the months of May, June, July and August.

Discover Costa Rica

giant turtle

Home to tropical rainforests, rugged mountains and the arresting Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, Costa Rica is world-renowned for its unique and unusual wildlife. From screeching Howler monkeys and two-toed sloths to a dizzying number of turtle species, the country is an incredible haven for weird and wonderful creatures. There is often some disparity about the best times to visit Costa Rica, but according to the experts, the green season comes with more perks. Also known as the rainy season, this is the time when the wildlife becomes more active. Although there are afternoon showers during June and September, they don’t tend to last too long, and they’re usually followed by bright sunshine. You’ll also find during these months the rainforests come to life and there are fewer crowds, so you might even have the beaches all to yourself.

From late July to September, the endangered Green turtles come ashore at Tortuguero to lay their eggs, and you can book an optional excursion on our Discover Costa Rica trip to witness one of nature’s finest spectacles. Tortuguero also plays host to Hawksbill, Loggerhead and Giant Leatherback turtles that nest on its shores.

Gorillas & Masai Mara – Reverse

Made up of sprawling savannah and rugged hills, the Masai Mara National Reserve is a hive of activity for many of the world’s greatest animals. September is one of the best months to witness the wildebeest migration – the world’s largest migration and nature’s finest extravaganzas where over two million animals cross the Serengeti and the Masai Mara.

June to September are among the driest months in the Masai Mara and you can witness animals such as zebras, hippos, elephants, lions and cheetahs drinking from water holes. The temperatures don’t tend to get too hot at these times but there is usually plenty of sunshine, making it perfect weather for game drives in Lake Nakuru and Queen Elizabeth national parks where you can spot rhinos, hippos, buffalo, leopards and a wide variety of birds. One of the greatest highlights of our Gorillas and Masai Mara trip is a close-up experience with the gorillas at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. You can trek across Bwindi throughout the year, but between June and August, the forest is drier, making it easier to climb up the sloping trails.

Discover Namibia – Camping

Namibia is a magnificent country with diverse scenery and exceptional game viewing. From the world’s tallest sand dunes and mighty mountains to giant salt pans, it’s a natural playground for all kinds of wonderful wildlife. On our Namibia camping trip, you’ll spend two days in Etosha National Park, which is best explored during the dry season, from July to September, when wildebeest, zebra, giraffes, elephants and lions congregate around water holes – it is a sight to behold. Night-time temperatures can drop quite significantly between June and August but they begin to rise again in September, making it a good time for camping in Namibia. Also, the vast desert skies are much clearer and there’s a better chance of experiencing the fiery African sunsets.

Discover Sri Lanka

leopard

Strewn with rainforests, mountains, beaches, wildlife and diverse culture, Sri Lanka is a curious melting pot on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Between August and September, it’s monsoon season here but if you want to avoid the heavy downpours, the inter-monsoon season from July to September is the best time to book our Discover Sri Lanka tour. This is also one of the best times to visit Yala National Park, home to one of the greatest concentrations of leopards in the world. As the water supplies deplete between June and September, leopards and other animals such as wild boars, bears and elephants come to drink from water holes. Also, during these months, the palm trees bear their bright yellow fruits, attracting the sloth bears.

Whales and Bears of British Columbia

whales

Wildlife lovers will be in their element on our Whales and Bears of British Columbia tour as each day is packed with outstanding wildlife spotting opportunities. British Columbia sits within the dramatic scenery of Western Canada and is the place to visit for some of the greatest animal encounters on the planet. There’s no time like August for getting up close to the indigenous flora and fauna and exploring the stunning landscapes, as the weather tends to be much drier and milder. From late August, Vancouver’s Campbell River and the Orford River become hotspots for Grizzly and Black bears as well as kingfishers, seals and eagles that are on the hunt for the spawning salmon.

One of the main highlights of this trip is the whale watching excursion. August is a great month for spotting Humpback, Minke, Grey and Orca whales, and you’ll also see the sea lions lazing on the headlands. But if you want to see a wider variety of whales, then opt for dates between mid-July and October.

If you’re looking to witness incredible wildlife encounters this year, why not browse through our collection of Summer Adventures, and save up to £300 on trips this summer.
