Portugal is one of Europe’s oldest countries and boasts some of its most varied landscapes to boot. Our selection of curated walking holidays in Portugal offers you the chance to cover some of its most dramatic areas, while indulging yourself in its homegrown port and delicious homemade pastries along the way.
Some of our walking trips in Portugal concentrate on the islands – Madeira, and, far out into the Atlantic, the stunning Azores. Walking on Madeira is well-established, with a network of paths called levadas running all over this beautiful island. With its almost perfect climate, excellent food and dramatic but easily accessible mountains, Madeira is a perfect place for a week of walking.
And then there’s the Azores. These scattered islands hold some superb scenery, with volcanoes, hot springs and crater lakes. Mix these natural elements with its unique culture, and a walking holiday in the Azores is well worth considering.
For a drink first enjoyed by ancient civilisations, start off in Porto and travel through the UNESCO World Heritage Douro Valley on our walking and wine tour. Whichever of the walking tours in Portugal ticks your boxes, you’re on the right path with Exodus.

Great trip from start to finish showcasing lots of different parts of Sri Lanka. The hiking was great and really got you away from the tourist hot spots. Beautiful scenery up in the mountains and forests, tea plantations, lakes, waterfalls. It was more beautiful than I had imagined. Hotels were all of a good standard, several with pools. I would have preferred not to camp the one night but that is just me! I liked that there weren’t lots of long road journeys and the itinerary was well paced. Lots of opportunities to sample Sri Lankan food. Great wildlife and birds. We were lucky enough to spot a leopard but the safari would have been fun even if we hadn’t as there was still lots to see. Overall, a brilliant trip as you see and do so much in the 15 days.
Really enjoyed this trip. I liked the busy pace, the treks, houseboat and the homestay in particular. It was only a small group but we bonded easily over a couple of beers on the first night and that continued through the duration of the trip.
This was an excellent week of walking. The paths are steep in some places but well defined and Jose guided us with care and attention on the challenging ascents and descents of the Sierra Aitana. The walks were well-paced by Jose but the days are long so you do need to be fit. We trekked through a number of landscapes illustrating the historic and current use of the area and Jose with his local knowledge enhanced our understanding of how this area has evolved over the centuries as well as the current challenges. The views from the walks were amazing – one way you could see the coast from Alicante to Benidorm and beyond and the other the folding valleys and mountains of the interior. The skies were blue and the days sunny and warm and we experienced very little wind even on the summits. We were based at the Hostel Rincon de Pepe where we had a wonderful week being looked after by Raquel. The food was amazing and hearty (three courses plus wine). The terrace was also great place to have breakfast every morning as the sun rose out of the Med, as well as a beer or two after the walk as the sun disappeared behind the mountains.
Including flights, you could be plodding in Portugal for between five and eleven days. Our five-day self guided tour along the Atlantic coastline of the Western Algarve is a short break amongst unspoilt meadows and dramatic clifftops, while most other walking tours in Portugal will take you away for over a week.
