- Where to Travel in May
May is a great month to visit Europe before the crowds arrive during the peak summer months. Or head to South America for the start of the trekking season in Peru.
AZORES
Witness the baleen whale migration
As temperatures begin to rise, the Azores offer ideal conditions for walking and exploring. May is also peak season for whale watching, as baleen whales migrate through the archipelago. Alongside these giants, you may also spot bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales, sperm whales, and even blue whales in these rich Atlantic waters.
PERU
Superb conditions for trekking
May marks the start of Peru’s dry season and the beginning of prime trekking conditions. Arriving early in the season means fewer crowds and excellent weather. It’s still warm enough for jungle excursions in the Tambopata Reserve, while the clear, dry conditions make it an ideal time to hike the Inca Trail, culminating at the iconic Machu Picchu. Book early for the Inca Trail: permits are required and always sell out quickly.
ITALY
Get ahead of the summertime crowds
In May, Italy comes into its own, with warm weather and landscapes in full bloom. It’s the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors before peak tourist season. Walk along the dramatic Amalfi Coast, explore rolling vineyards in Tuscany, or soak up the atmosphere of Italy’s historic towns and cities in relative tranquillity.
BORNEO
Spot orangutans in the jungle
May falls within Borneo’s dry season, offering some of the best conditions for wildlife spotting. Orangutans are often seen near water sources, while proboscis monkeys and Asian pygmy elephants can be spotted along the Kinabatangan River. The drier weather also brings good visibility for snorkelling along the coast.
TURKEY
Fly and trek in Cappadocia
With clear skies and comfortable temperatures, May is one of the best times to visit Cappadocia in Turkey. Early mornings are ideal for hot-air balloon rides over its surreal landscapes, while daytime temperatures (averaging around 23C) are perfect for exploring on foot. Cooler evenings make for a pleasant end to active days.
GEORGIA
Discover a land in full bloom
May is one of the best times to visit Georgia, with warm temperatures and landscapes in full bloom. Still relatively undiscovered, it’s perfect for travellers seeking something a little different. Explore ancient monasteries, cave towns and the dramatic Caucasus Mountains, or visit Kakheti’s vineyards, home to a winemaking tradition dating back thousands of years. With rich culture, warm hospitality and excellent food and wine, it’s an ideal time to visit.
