Cycling in Albania

What a fantastic trip! Superb cycling on quiet, scenic roads in beautiful Albania. Three of the days are quite challenging, but none the worse for it.

Most Inspirational Moment

The hotels and guest houses are all in great locations - waking up in the mountains in Benje and looking forward to another (easier) day of great cycling, good food and sunshine.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dhimi was good fun with a great sense of humour. The whole trip was very well organised and well thought out. We all contributed towards a kitty at the start which worked really well. At every coffee stop Dhimi would organise drinks and snacks, which meant we could sit down straight away and still get served quickly, which can be challenging in a group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Dhimi took us to a lovely restaurant in Tirana after meeting us at the airport, so don't worry about food on the flight or for the transfer. It's worth mentioning that you'll see a few goat herders on the trip and some of them have dogs that are fond of cyclists. If you go faster, they go faster - the trick is to stop pedalling and slow down and they soon lose interest.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

The walking/hiking part of this trip was very good. The hotel was average to poor. The breakfasts were heavy on bread. There was one coffee machine for 50 people leading to long waits. There was NO hot water for tea in the evening. If you didn’t want alcohol, you were out of luck. The lunches were very heavy on bread and no fruit, unless you took something from breakfast. My room had ONE electrical outlet. TV or charge phone/camera battery? Your pick. There was no method to pre-arrange optional trips or transportation.

The bus drivers were very good on the narrow, winding roads.

His undersanding and use of English was poor. Slow hikers were on their own.

We would like to thank Steve for his feedback, although we are very sorry to learn of his disappointment with his stay at Hotel Due Torri. We have been using Hotel Due Torri for over 10 years and the feedback we have received from clients is normally very positive, so we were surprised to learn that Steve experienced issues with the breakfasts and his room. We have discussed these concerns with the management team at the hotel and they have explained that they are looking into implementing tea/coffee making facilities in each room later in the year, which will improve the overall service. Whilst tea and coffee are always available upon request from the staff, we would like to apologise for the particularly long waits that Steve experienced; we have passed this on to the staff to ensure that this will not occur again. We have started to use local leader for this trip as we believe they offer outstanding local knowledge and are able to add a lot of value to the trip. All our local leaders are highly qualified, but we regret that this leader’s English was not as fluent as expected; we will ensure that further training is given.

Steps galore!

The villages of the Cinque Terre are remarkable, clinging to the cliff edge by magic.
Reaching them along the coastal paths involves walking busy routes with LOTS of
vertical steps. Achievable as long as the walk leader allows time for enough drink breaks
and the fact that it is very easy to get caught behind a slower group so time to re-group
is vital. The walk to Portofino was nice, quite a short day so a good break between visiting
the Cinque Terre. Without the excellent train service serving this region this trip wouldn’t
work. An interesting tour with varied nationalities and personalities

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be advised that the steps on the coastal path to the Cinque Terre villages are uneven and steep. Walking poles were essential for the descents. Take plenty of snacks and water

Jordan was great - the cycling was not!!

We loved Jordan! The itinerary was very good – we got to see and do a lot in our week, a great variety of sights and experiences. Having been on several cycling holidays (with Exodus and other companies) we thought we knew what to expect. We did NOT expect the first 2 rides to be all fast downhill (with the exception of the last couple of miles) on bikes with terrible brakes. I like to earn a downhill and whizzing downwards concentrating on where I was going meant that I didn’t really appreciate the view and the bad brakes made it hard work! The 3rd ride was truly awful but not normal itinerary ride so no comment. At last, the 4th ride was as we expected – some up, some down, lovely views, camels running down the road in front of us, a baby donkey running alongside us and a picnic at the end of the ride, perfect! The last ride was just a short, flat and fairly boring ride to the desert camp. The cycling element also made some of the other things a bit rushed. On the whole the cycling felt a bit ‘tacked on’ and not a cohesive part of the trip!

Visiting Petra - it was more amazing than we anticipated. Floating in the Dead Sea.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take the 'Week in Jordan' trip as you'll see exactly the same things (plus a bit more!) and take another one of Exodus' excellent cycling trips if you want to pedal!!! You'll have plenty of activity with all the miles of walking at Petra and the swimming at the Dead Sea and Aqaba.

Trip of a Lifetime - Everest Base Camp Trek

This had been on my bucket list for a while and it didn’t disappoint! Absolutely breathtaking scenery, exciting trekking and a wonderful culture. I’m so glad I booked with Exodus as the whole experience, from start to finish, was organised and managed to perfection. Don’t find an excuse not to do this, just do it!

Arriving at Base Camp was an incredible feeling, and the ascent of Kala Patthar the next day, whilst tough, gave the most impressive views of the Everest range.

Our leader, Pasang Bomjan, was flawless throughout. He was very professional, extremely knowledgeable and the group felt very safe in his hands.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My advice would be to not underestimate the challenge - at the highest altitudes the trekking is tough, even if you are fit. Otherwise, just do it!

Sicilian Volcanoes

Really enjoyed this holiday. Very varied, with excellent walking experiences, combined with plenty of downtime, and the chance to sample the local cuisine.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting up Stromboli, watching fireworks from the volcano on two successive days, one up close and personal and then yomping down 500m in the dark. Spectacular.

Great Varied Trip

Great trip if you want a combination of wildlife and scenery. The camping was comfortable, campsites generally good, some suberbly located.

Most Inspirational Moment

Sesriem Sand Dunes, Vic Falls helicopter flight, Chobe evening game drive where we saw lions,giraffes,elephants, hippos,impalas, springboks, baboons, amongst others in 3 hours !

Andrew was terrific : made the trip that much more enjoyable.

Previous advice about a washing line with hooks was very useful.

Wild Sri Lanka

This was a wonderful trip that certainly lived up to its promise of plenty of wildlife encounters. Sri Lanka is stunningly beautiful and has a lovely relaxed vibe.

There were many - a blue whale popping up in front of our boat, the stunning scenery, the friendly people, the narrow streets of Galle and the pristine beaches

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had a leader, Kingsley and a naturalist, Sunil. Both made sure we were well informed without being intrusive and were great company throughout the trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are British take Stirling to change at the airport (loads of change bureaus as you leave). Don't change heaps because it's really easy to use atms as you go along and every hotel took credit cards for settling bills. Don't bother packing beach towels - every hotel had pool /beach towels for you to use. Pack light - you will be living in shorts and t-shirts as it is so hot and humid. An umbrella is useful for a sudden downpour or as a parasol. In Talalla have lunch on the beach at the seafood hut - it looks basic but the food was fabulous.

Beautiful but brutal (on the legs)

A whirl wind trip with amazing memories! Amazing scenery, welcoming locals, a fun group and a mountain worth conquering!!

Most Inspirational Moment

Making it to the top!! The altitude on such a short trip (up and down the mountain) does play a factor on this trip, so making it to the top felt a huge achievement. The views were breath taking, literally!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Aziz was an excellent leader - very well organised, calm and coped well with a large group with differing abilities/needs. Aziz also had an excellent team around him, we were well looked after by the full team and the food was fantastic (both in terms of quality and quantity).

Advice for Potential Travellers

Even though this is just a weekend trip, don't underestimate how exhausting it will be. My fitness levels were ok but I would have enjoyed this trip a little more had I trained a wee bit more beforehand. That said, everyone had sore legs the day after the climb, it's a long ascent/descent day! Change money at the airport in Marrakech (after security but before going through to landside) as you can't change money at the hotel. Or use ATMs near hotel (which we did without any issues). Consider doing the trip in early April to get the chance to climb on snow (without it being full on winter) for me having to use crampons added to the fun of the trip.
