Cycling the Cape and Winelands

A very well planned, organised and led tour of a fantastic country. The cycling was at times hard but always breath taking. A wonderful way to see a country.

Most Inspirational Moment

When the wind finally came from behind and we got to ride Chapmans drive which was closed to traffic. Riding with the stunning coast at our side.

Thoughts on Group Leader

With Jean Paul Gardelli in charge it was like having your Mom, Dad and best friend rolled into one. Ten out of ten for organisation and forward planning, a great encourager and patience worthy of a saint. He went above and beyond what I have experienced before and ensured we all had the best experience possible. Assistant leader Layla and driver Endy followed JP's high standards. So accommodating, friendly and accomplished.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The wind at times turned moderate into challenging but the minibus was always readily available.

CAP - Snowshoeing in the Catalan Pyrenees

A snowshoeing holiday based in two small traditional Catalan mountain villages. The food in the hotels was excellent. I requested vegetarian meals and was very pleased with the dishes that were served. Each walk explored a different valley and started by ascending through forest tracks which led to views of the surrounding mountain ranges. The walks were led by a local mountain guide who was able to take us away from the main tracks and onto the more interesting ones. Transport to and from the walks was provided by a local taxi company. The 4 wheel drive vehicles allowed us to travel further up the mountain roads which gave us time to climb higher into the mountains. The walks could be changed depending on the amount of snow and the fitness level of the group. After three of the walks we visited locals who had chosen to leave Barcelona to earn a living in the mountains which gave an insight into what it is like to live in a remote mountainous area.

Most Inspirational Moment

Learning about local life in a remote mountain setting. Everyone we met felt their lives had improved by moving out of the city and into the mountains. They were keen to improve the local economy.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The leader of the trip was excellent. His knowledge of the area meant we could explore more on the walks and not stick to the main track. The organisation was perfect and our transport was always on time. He was very personable with all the group and had a good sense of humour. On his free day he came with us to the next village and organised a visit to an Eco Museum. He was keen to hear our thoughts on the trip as he wanted to keep improving it for future guests.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you forget anything for the trip buy it at the airport. The villages where you stay do not have any shops.

Fantastic Trip

Plenty of uphills in this Atlas Descent!!

Most Inspirational Moment

Being immersed in the hugely diverse scenery which changed daily from red rock sandstone to barren mountains to lush palm oases to alpine meadow.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jon was excellent; unflappable, organised, hardworking, always going the extra mile, down to earth, approachable, knowledgeable and spending time with each member of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We went on the trip in February and were glad of our layers, thermals and waterproofs!! It rained some days and the temperature felt near zero at some of the higher altitudes. Some of the sections were muddy and some of the descents / ascents were fairly technical, some parts were similar to red graded UK trails. The bikes all seemed to be tubeless and were very well maintained. None of the group had a puncture so we wouldn't have bothered bringing spare inner tubes in hindsight. We did bring bags with platypus type bladders but in hindsight bottles are better because you can then leave your bag in the jeep.

Thanks for returning Mr Snowman

Another good holiday with good company and extremely knowledgeable group leaders. Extremely good accommodation in the welcoming Hotel Tschurtschenthaler with it’s excellent Wellness Centre.
Good skiing in reducing snow conditions until the last day.

Most Inspirational Moment

The first was the final day when the snow returned with a vengeance and we were able to enjoy our final long ski in really good conditions. The second was the really enjoyable final evening with Alex's entertaining slide show (and my thank you speech to the group leaders!)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alex was his usual bubbly self. Really supportive of the less experienced skiers whose skills progressed really quickly over the week with his entertaining instruction. He is the first leader I have seen using penguins, Christmas Puddings and chocolates on trays to encourage people to improve their skills. He managed this while working extremely hard to find good snow for us to ski on safely. His co-leader assisted in this process.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Put your trust in the leaders as the Exodus leaders I have experience of have all been excellent. Make sure you have a wide range of different layers of clothing as the temperature in Dobbiaco varies considerably during the day. If you like wine ask Marlies the hotel owner for advice regarding the local wines the hotel stocks. She knows what she is talking about.

Andes to Amazon

This was an amazing journey through all the different regions of Ecuador.
We started in Quito, went to the cloud forest, through hot springs, markets in Otavalo, to the jungle, up to Chimbarazo – the point nearest the sun, to the lovely city of Cuenca up to the high plains of Cajas national park, back to the mangroves and dry tropical forest.
Our guide and driver were amazing, the food was lovely and I would not believe it was possible to fit so much into two weeks. It was not for the feint hearted – we had very long days of travelling and went up and down in terms of altitude and temperature. Perhaps some shorter drives and longer time in the lovely places we stayed would have made it a bit more like a holiday! Not sure how it could be changed though.

Most Inspirational Moment

Can't pick out one? I loved traveling down river in the jungle and the Mangroves, and being up in the Cajas National Park. Cuenca was a lovely city and joining in the Mardi Gras celebrations as we went along made the trip very special.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was excellent. He was very good at including everyone and dealing with various illnesses suffered by the group. He had heaps of local knowledge.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Keep luggage to a minimum. Lots of outdoor wear clothes which protect from sun and insects. Make sure you are fit for the walks which are quite hard, and be prepared for very long journeys.

Catalonia Pyrenees

A wonderful week with a very attentive guide, good food and spectacular scenery.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking through the National park to the lakes on the last day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Miguel was attentive to our needs and very helpful with interpreting on our behalf. He has a passion for his country which was infectious. He looked after us very well and I felt safe at all times.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There are no shops. Take your swimming things as the nearby hotel has a spa you can pay to use. Be fit. I felt this trip was at the high end of level 3 !

The Tropical South

Good company, just the right sized group. The tour guide was excellent, the driver and his assistant were helpful and safe. The route was well chosen with a combination of large and small towns / cities with interesting history and sites. The restaurants we visited were good with varied menus. Scenery was excellent. There was something for everyone: scenery, culture, wildlife, history and many varieties of kingfisher (of both types!)

Most Inspirational Moment

Difficult - I think probably the the evening walk to the fishing harbour at Kovalam with the sun setting behind the mosque. But the optional boat trip on Periyar Lake in the evening was a close runner up when we were fortunate to see wild elephants, otters, large turtles, many kingfishers, monkeys, deer, bison and wild boar. Actually perhaps this was the best. But then there was the morning boat trip with sun rising behind the chinese fish traps.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sam was an excellent group leader and was able to provide much interesting background on all the places visited as well as the normal information you would expect. The group as a whole got on very well and I'm sure that this was in part thanks to him. Very humorous and diplomatic.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Some of the party stayed on at the end for a few relaxing days at the beach - we could not manage it on this occasion but it was a very good idea and would definitely try to do it on a future trip.

Delhi to Kathmandu

Very enjoyable experiences.

Most Inspirational Moment

I enjoyed all that we saw and did. We visited a school on request to give pens and paper. Thought seeing sun rise on the Ganges and sending a light down the river very moving. Loved staying at Chitsan another chances to flot on the water and seeing all the animals. Didn't see the tigers though.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Gajraj was very good with information and helped us to understand his country. He was full of fun to that helped us all to get on together. Pleased that he fixed for us to visit a school.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Water in Nepal is readily available no need for water purifying stuff. Lot of dust a face mask is a good idea to have if you suffer with a bad chest.

Cycling 'Nam

This cycling holiday was the experience of a lifetime. Some of the cycling was tough, some was smooth, the road surfaces were variable but the countryside and the people were incredible. The team were the best team I have ever been away with. Our guide Linh Vo was phenomenal. We got local history, politics, information and humour every day. We were broken in gently to the vagaries of the Vietnam traffic system and by the end we were part of the general chaos. The food was as colourful and varied as the landscape. We had fresh lime juice and water served at every stop by the cheerful and helpful drivers. The overnight train from Hue to Hanoi was not restful but the karaoke boat trip was very good fun. There was a great sense of camraderie on the trip both when cycling and when visiting pagodas, buddhist burial sites and sea kayaking. All in all a fantastic experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing up a 10k hill from sea level and then looking at the view over the sea and mountains at the top.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was the most exceptional man I have ever encountered. He looked after us without nannying us, gave us a fantastic overview of the country from North to South and kept us entertained daily with all sorts of interesting anecdotes. He deserves a prize!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take some warm clothes, Hanoi and Halong Bay were cold. Have fun in Hoi An and take some clothese that you might like to have copied.

Kerala

A varied trip taking in the landscapes, culture and architecture of a lovely part of India.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the tea plantations. We never thought an agricultural area could be so lovely with waves of tea bushes stretching to the horizon. The trek section of the trip was good and not too arduous. The highest point was worth the climb for the views. The national park was scenic and plenty of wildlife incuding wild elephants. The houseboat cruise was a lovely relaxing way to wind down before a day in Fort Cochin and the journey home.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Umed was an excellent leader and very personable. Always on the ball and full of interesting anecdotes about the areas we visited. Umed made sure we were all looked after and well fed even in the remote camps. The local guides were also good and informative.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Not a hard trek, but we had good weather throughout. Can get a little cold at top station, so take a thermal.
